Ritualization Of Texts And Textualization Of Ritual In The Codification Of Taoist Liturgy, Catherine M. Bell May 1988

Ritualization Of Texts And Textualization Of Ritual In The Codification Of Taoist Liturgy, Catherine M. Bell

Religious Studies

Early in the fifth century in China, the Taoist master began to edit a set of scriptures that had been "revealed" years earlier. These were the Ling-pao or Spiritual tures, considered to be the second major scriptural development of medieval Taoism. 1 In reconstructing corpus of Ling-pao scriptures from among a multitude and forgeries, Lu worked to present these texts as revelation of the Tao in history, thereby inhibiting further and securing some closure on an early canon. At however, Lu began to codify the ritual material contained scriptures to fashion the liturgical directives that for much of the subsequent …

Ancestral Beliefs And Practices: A Program For Developing Christian Faith Among Adventists In Zimbabwe, Zebron Masukume Ncube Jan 1988

Ancestral Beliefs And Practices: A Program For Developing Christian Faith Among Adventists In Zimbabwe, Zebron Masukume Ncube

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Problem. Every Seventh-day Adventist pastor in Zimbabwe at one time or another has had to deal with a situation where church members consult their ancestors when threatened by sickness, death, misfortune, or a series of tragedies. The Adventist church correctly takes a strong stand against ancestral practices. Despite such a stand the ancestral practices have persisted among many Adventists. Paradoxically, while church members are given the correct teaching before baptism, many continue to regard the ancestors as the court of appeal in times of crisis. This study is undertaken to understand the nature of this traditional religion in order to …

Viewpoints: Dialogue In India, Anand Amaladass

Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies

If publications and dialogue meetings are of any indication, then the dialogue initiative has come to stay in India. During the last two decades this initiative has grown among Hindus and Christians, though it is difficult to give the exact percentage of Indians who are affected by the dialogue movement. In the name of dialogue various centres are opened by the Christian communities and well-informed Hindus participating in inter-religious seminars and prayer meetings are in the increase. They find that more of 'living-together' for a few days rather than formal discussions and seminars brings about a better result, creating fellowship …

Language, The Other And God: On Italo Calvino's Last Novels, Richard Grigg Oct 1987

Language, The Other And God: On Italo Calvino's Last Novels, Richard Grigg

Philosophy, Theology and Religious Studies Faculty Publications

To the extent that Italo Calvino's novels point us toward a God beyond the God who died with the advent of modern nihilism, they are an important resource for constructing just that kind of notion of the divine that is required by the contemporary cultural situation: a notion that is an alternative to both theism and atheism. While theism cannot withstand the corrosive forces integral to the modern world view, atheism makes the fatal mistake of supposing that there is no longer any dimension of ultimacy available to contemporary persons. The God we have been led to by Calvino's last …
