The Kingly Office Of Christ In The Old Testament, Clarence Peters

The Conception Of God In Modern Philosophy: A Presentation Of The Views Of Josiah Royce, Henri Bergson, William James And H.G. Wells, H A. Basilius

Bachelor of Divinity

In defining the scope of our paper, we have tried to hold before us several very general objectives. In accordance with our thesis we shall, of course, treat the religious speculations of the above named philosophers. We shall nevertheless also show the roots of the respective systems from which these speculations take their source. We shall also attempt to show the endeavors of harmonizing-if the expression may be pardoned-religio-philosophic thought with the substrata of revealed religion together with the fact of and cause for the inevitable failure of such attempts. And finally, we hope to point out on the basis …

The Doctrine Of The Resurrection In The Old Testament, William E. Meyer Jan 1928

The Doctrine Of The Resurrection In The Old Testament, William E. Meyer

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The doctrine of the resurrection-, of the body is fundamental to the Christian faith. It is so closely linked to all articles of our religion that if robbed from its setting our whole system of Christian doctrine would become a purposeless aimless jumble of strange notions. This doctrine permeates the whole Christian conception of the divine plan of salvation, supplying it with a purpose. What Dorner says of Israel that “it has the idea of teleology as a kind of a soul” applies to the Christian religion. The final purpose of every act of God is the salvation of mankind. …

The Immortality Of The Soul, Francis George Ramsden Jun 1927

The Immortality Of The Soul, Francis George Ramsden

Bachelors’ Theses

Throughout these changing centuries since the beginning of the world, and among the ever varying elements of life, there has been one being who has remained essentially the same. Man was created by God and endowed with a body and a soul. Though times and customs have changed and man lives differently now than did those who preceded him, he still possesses these same physical parts, a body and a soul.

Mysticism In The Metaphysical School Of Poets, Jessie Donaldson Corrigan Jun 1927

Mysticism In The Metaphysical School Of Poets, Jessie Donaldson Corrigan

Bachelors’ Theses

In the desire to transcend the physical world, men of every age have set foot upon the "Mystic Way". This desire, which is a thing internal and intuitive, has been called the "instinct for transcendence." Once upon the mystic way, "the wistful eyes of Life are set towards a vision that is also a Home - a Home from which news can reach us now and again".

The Bearing Of Nationalism Upon The Indian Church, Helen M. Nicholson Jun 1927

The Bearing Of Nationalism Upon The Indian Church, Helen M. Nicholson

Graduate Thesis Collection

There are various conceptions of nationalism, but the one which is incorporated here is that which has to do with a national consciousness, a feeling of unity among those inhabiting the same country. For the most part it is political unity which is meant, though this has been attended by an increasing emphasis upon unity of Indian language, customs, and manners. It must be acknowledged that there is a bond of unity in the historic traditions of the centuries of culture and in the religious myths which are immortalized in the Mahabharata and the Ramayana, but this is hardly sufficient.

The Postexilic History Of The Jews From 538-432 B.C., Herman Julius Meyer

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The purpose of this thesis is thus to give a short, chronological account of' the history of' the Jews from 538 B.C. to 432 B.C., based not upon any of the preconceived notions of the "Higher Critics" but upon the Bible, the only infallible account that can give us a true picture of events of this period of the Jews.

The Day Of Atonement, Philip Albrecht May 1927

The Day Of Atonement, Philip Albrecht

Bachelor of Divinity

There was, however, one festival, which clearly and definitely symbolized the Messiah and his work. This was the Day of Atonement. It fore-shadowed the Messiah in many ways, but especially in his office as high-priest, his mediation and atonement by sacrifice. For this reason the Day of Atonement has a greater significance for us than the other festivals of the Old Testament. It has direct prophecies of the Christ who atoned for us.

Mithraism And Early Christianity, Edward A. Jenne May 1927

Mithraism And Early Christianity, Edward A. Jenne

Bachelor of Divinity

The word Mystery was the name of a religious society, founded not on citizenship or kindred, but on the choice of its members, for the practice of rites by which, it was believed, their happiness might be promoted both in this world and in the next.

The Companions Of St. Paul, Hugo W. Wolter May 1927

The Companions Of St. Paul, Hugo W. Wolter

Bachelor of Divinity

In treating a subject of this kind it is natural to ask the question: whom should we consider companions of the Apostle Paul? If we were to consider all those men and women who at various times were his coworkers and friends, we would have a work which would fill volumes. For this reason I will deal with those men only who were his companions and coworkers on his var1ous Journeys. It is not my purpose to treat all of them biographically for large books have been written about some or his companions, Luke, the beloved physician for example. It …

Boniface The Apostle Of Romanism, William E. Meyer May 1927

Boniface The Apostle Of Romanism, William E. Meyer

Bachelor of Divinity

Winfrid(Boniface) was born of a noble family in Devonshire about 680 A. D. From his early youth he was inclined to the study of spiritual things rather than to temporal knowledge. His father was disappointed at this predilection in his son, since he had intended to make him successor of his estate. Softened by sickness the father finally consented to his son's ecclesiastical ambition and sent him to the monastery Adesconcastre. There he showed earnestness and zeal for learning so that his abbot sent him to the advanced school at Nhutscelle.

Conscience Its Nature And Function, Richard R. Caemmerer Apr 1927

Conscience Its Nature And Function, Richard R. Caemmerer

Bachelor of Divinity

The subject as stated in itself excludes the problem of the origin of conscience, a large field especially in phylogenetic theories (theories of remorse, origin of duty, origin of the good); it excludes the practical aspects and applications of the doctrines of conscience (systems of casuistry; social sphere of conscience; freedom of conscience). The subject has been-further limited, a procedure demanded by considerations of time and space, by a particular viewpoint applied to this discussion. The viewpoint permits formulation in the shape of a statement of the problem, namely: To determine the validity of the term "conscience" as an ethical …

The Causes Of The Persecution Of The Early Christians, Karl H. Maier Mar 1927

The Causes Of The Persecution Of The Early Christians, Karl H. Maier

Bachelor of Divinity

The popular and traditional view of the persecutions of the Christiane considers them to be ten in number lasting from 64 to 311 A.D. The persecutions are looked upon as fiendish and arbitrary attacks of various emperors against Christianity out of hatred, and periods of comparative quiet appear to be indication that some emperors favored or recognized Christianity. The consideration of the persecutions in this light leads to the opinion that they were all of the same nature, and gives no indication of the real depth of the conflict and the issues involved.
