An Analysis Of The Papers And Speeches Of Those Who Have Written Or Spoken About The Book Of Mormon Published During The Years Of 1830 To 1855 And 1915 To 1940 To Ascertain The Shift In Emphasis, Alton D. Merrill Jan 1940

An Analysis Of The Papers And Speeches Of Those Who Have Written Or Spoken About The Book Of Mormon Published During The Years Of 1830 To 1855 And 1915 To 1940 To Ascertain The Shift In Emphasis, Alton D. Merrill

Theses and Dissertations

The Book of Mormon was published over one hundred years ago. In the meantime, many articles have been written and many discourses have been published, both for and against this volume. In reflecting upon this matter the following questions arose in the mind of the author: Have the writers and speakers been concerned about the same materials, have they treated the same themes, as the years have passed? To ascertain whether or not there has been a shift in emphasis, the following investigation was undertaken.

Antichristian Teaching Of Rosicrucianism, J. T. Mueller

Concordia Theological Monthly

Among the many "cunningly devised fables" (cf. 2 Pet.1: 18) which false prophets are spreading with unholy assiduity to injure the kingdom of Christ, those of modern Rosicrucianism easily rank among the first, both in insidiousness and in perniciousness.

Luther's Position On The Lord's Supper, H. B. Hemmeter Oct 1939

Luther's Position On The Lord's Supper, H. B. Hemmeter

Concordia Theological Monthly

From times immemorial heirs and beneficiaries have made havoc with the last wills and testaments of their benefactors. They have disquieted and disrupted families which otherwise had been peaceful and loving. And this havoc has often defied amelioration or removal. Even so in the case of our Lord's last will and testament. The Christian Church, the family of the saints on earth, stands before the world rent asunder also by reason of its divergent interpretations of our Lord's testament of love, His last will, in which He has given Himself to His disciples. In the hands of men this testament …

K. Barth said in 1923: "Uncertainty prevails in the Lutheran communion also, and they have Crypto-Calvinists and even Crypto-Zwinglians among them in fairly large numbers - at least in respect of the question of the Lord's Supper." (The Word of God and the Word of Man, p. 260.) Is that true? The Allg. Ev. Luth. Kirchenzeitung wrote April 10, 1931: ''The false teaching of the Lord's Supper, which has split the Church since the days of Marburg, has invaded our Lutheran Church and is today penetrating its innermost circles.

The Province Of Human Reason In Religion, M. S. Sommer Jun 1939

The Province Of Human Reason In Religion, M. S. Sommer

Concordia Theological Monthly

At the very outset it is necessary to define what I mean by human reason. By this term I mean the entire sum of natural knowledge and powers of the human mind, including intuition and conscience and the ability to reason correctly. This human reason is a very precious gift of God and is therefore also to be prized very highly. It is a sign of great folly, corruption, aye, of Satanic delusion, to despise and teach others to despise God's gifts in nature. "For every creature of God is good, and nothing to be refused, if it be received …

The Archeology Of The Sacraments, P. E. Kretzmann May 1939

The Archeology Of The Sacraments, P. E. Kretzmann

Concordia Theological Monthly

The boundary between history and archeology is somewhat indefinite, but for the purpose of this short discussion the following distinction may be of value. History is a more or less orderly narration of events, either in the form of a chronicle which notes down occurrences from day to day or week to week, like a diary, or in logical arrangement, presenting events in units as the historian understands the incidents which he presents. Archeology, on the other hand, and, in this instance, Christian archeology, is the science of Christian antiquity, an orderly presentation not so much of historical events as …

The Saxons Move To Perry County, P. E. Kretzmann

Concordia Theological Monthly

When the Saxon Lutherans reached the metropolis of the central Mississippi Valley, then a town of some 16,000 inhabitants, their plans had not yet fully matured. Only one point seems to have been reasonably certain, namely, that they did not intend to remain in St. Louis. In the Regulations for the Emigrant, approved in Dresden on May 17, 1838, paragraph 4 reads:

"Place of Settlement. -The place of colonization in the United States of North America is to be chosen in one of the Western States in Missouri or Illinois or perhaps in Indiana."

Lutheran Hymns In English Translation Or The Contribution Of Nineteenth Century Translators In England To English Hymnody, Hans Bruss

Bachelor of Divinity

Christian song, as it has been in the past, so it is today a tremendous influence in the life of God’s people here on earth. Next only to the Bible, the Hymnody of Christendom is probable the most influential medium of religious culture that we possess. The Hymnody of the Christian Church can be compared to wells of living water. From these wells Christians drink deeply in public worship. By these wells Christian spiritual life is awakened, educated1, and sustained. From these wells Christians find strength and inspiration for their tasks during the week; they find power to carry on …

The Christian Apologists Of The Second Century Their Message And Mission, Clarence Bopp Apr 1939

The Christian Apologists Of The Second Century Their Message And Mission, Clarence Bopp

Bachelor of Divinity

This book shows us that the Jewish people stil1 regarded Christ as an impostor, and were then still expecting a Messiah who would be a glorious ruler. It also indicates that the traveling opponents of Christianity were still exerting their influence. Therefore the Christian apologists of the second century had to keep the Jews in mind. In dealing with them Justin argues from the Old Testament, to show that the prophecies of the Messiah can be fulfilled only in Jesus Christ; he also attacks their ceremonialism and formalism. Thus apologetics against the Jews in the second century is still of …

The Bearing Of The Theory Of Evolution Upon The Chrisitian Doctrine Of Man, Theodore Martin Apr 1939

The Bearing Of The Theory Of Evolution Upon The Chrisitian Doctrine Of Man, Theodore Martin

Bachelor of Divinity

Evolution is an attempt to explain present conditions. In reality it consists of a number of explanatory attempts, none of which are satisfactory. All involve change, a development of the simple into the complex. Evolution has been defined as a "change due to circumstances,” but this is only a part of the story. As it is generally understood, evolution means much more than this. It means a development in matter resulting from the action or forces resident in matter itself.

The Significance Of [Dam] In The Hebrew Religious System, Karl G. Peterson Jan 1939

The Significance Of [Dam] In The Hebrew Religious System, Karl G. Peterson

Graduate Thesis Collection

A study of the significance of [dam] in the Hebrew religious system immediately presents the problem of the meaning of the word which is used in the title. There are two words in the Hebrew language which are translated "blood", [dam] and [netaach]. The word [dam] is listed more than three hundred times in the Hebrew concordance, while the word [netaach] is listed but once as meaning "blood".

The Theology Of Clement Of Alexandria, Edward M. Sausaman Jan 1939

The Theology Of Clement Of Alexandria, Edward M. Sausaman

Graduate Thesis Collection

The following study of the theology of Clement of Alexandria is an attempt to gain some definite ideas of the theological tenets held by this early Christian. Such a study reveals the fact that Clement did not altogether have a definite theology completely formulated. On some points he has been almost silent - for reasons quite apparent. Although later theologies have attempted to find their justification in these early church fathers, in this work there is no such attempt.
