The Great Physician, Frederic Niedner Apr 1953

The Great Physician, Frederic Niedner

Concordia Theological Monthly

When God made man, He used the humblest material and made a supreme creature. Great artists have dipped their brushes into pigments and have painted upon canvas figures that seemed to live. God took the dust of the ground and made of it a body that really lived. And when the Creator had breathed into this body's nostrils the breath of life, man became a living soul. This man's body was fearfully and wonderfully made, perfect in its form and consummate in its functions. Man was possessed of health from head to foot, in mind and body. There was no …

Grace Of God In The Old Testament (Concluded), Walter R. Roehrs Jan 1953

Grace Of God In The Old Testament (Concluded), Walter R. Roehrs

Concordia Theological Monthly

After making a rapid survey of the terms that the Old Testament employs to denote the grace of God, we need to say that these words are not the fleeting sound of empty vocables. Nor do they describe an abstraction in the nature of a Platonic idea. They tell what God does to save men from the curse of their separation from Him and to bring them a life in blessed communion with Him. Our next task is, therefore, to trace how the grace of God entered the lives of the Old Testament believers to bring them salvation.

The Voodoo Gospel And The Christian Gospel, William Dewitt Burton Jan 1953

The Voodoo Gospel And The Christian Gospel, William Dewitt Burton

Honors Papers

When on September 4, 1950 I went to the Republic of Haiti as a missionary for the Lott Carey Baptist Foreign Mission Convention, U.S.A., I found Voodoo to be far more prevalent there than I had been led to believe, and I was very ill-prepared to cope with it in the rural area where I was assigned to work. I knew also that after two years I was to go to Liberia, ' West Africa, where I would find a similar situation. I then set about to learn all that I could about Voodoo.

Two main reasons, then, led me …

History Of Winter Quarters, Nebraska, 1846-1848, Ernest Widtsoe Shumway

Theses and Dissertations

The Indian agent, the trapper, or the citizens of small Iowa townships were undoubtedly startled to see such a large movement of people and wagons across the state of Iowa. It was the winter and early spring of 1846. The onlooker would have seen men, women, and children muffled against the wintry blast, walking or riding in covered wagons and lesser vehicles. Somehow these people were different from the occasional companies bound for points West. Many were ill equipped. Many had a look of gentility, or as the frontiersman might say, a "citified look." They kept to themselves and often …

The Position Of Adam In Latter-Day Scripture And Theology, Rodney Turner Jan 1953

The Position Of Adam In Latter-Day Scripture And Theology, Rodney Turner

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study is to determine, in so far as is possible, the views held by various leaders of the Latter-day Saints relative to Adam; and more especially, the official doctrine of the Church as to his place in its theology.
The problem is based, in part, on the divergent, and oft times bitter, claims and counter-claims of members, ex-members, and non-members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints over "Mormon" teachings concerning Adam in the light of a certain address given by president Brigham Young in 1852. Indeed, this address, and the man who gave …

An Investigation Of The Concept Of The Will As Found In The Writings Of Ellen G. White, Dalton D. Baldwin Jan 1953

An Investigation Of The Concept Of The Will As Found In The Writings Of Ellen G. White, Dalton D. Baldwin

Master's Theses

Statement of the problem

It is the purpose of this study to formulate a concept of the will, as derived from the writings of Mrs. Ellen G. White, that will enable more effective regulation of moral behavior, in self and in others. The problem will be divided into the following phases t (1) In what sense is man free? (2) What is the will? (3) How does the will function in the process of salvation?

Importance of the study

This study is not speculative. It has a practical end in view. It attempts to solve some of the problems that …

Incarnation : Hindu And Christian Thought, Benjamin Anthony Francis Jan 1953

Incarnation : Hindu And Christian Thought, Benjamin Anthony Francis

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

In writing these following pages, I have carefully avoided criticism of any kind. In these pages, I have mentioned the main differences between the Hindu and Christian faiths. I have treated this subject of incarnation with due respect to both the religions. If the subject could be discussed on an evaluative basis, then there would be the possibility of coming to the conclusion that there is less truth and more truth in different religious faiths. The most important consideration will be the truth value. In the incarnation stories, man is restored by God’s creative act to his original state.

An Analysis Of The Methodist Junior Group Graded Curriculum To Discover Its Adequacy For Rural Children, Edna Annis Quinn Jan 1953

An Analysis Of The Methodist Junior Group Graded Curriculum To Discover Its Adequacy For Rural Children, Edna Annis Quinn

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

It was the purpose of this study to discover to what degree the Methodist Group Graded Curriculum for junior age (nine-ten-eleven year old) children is applicable to the experiences or rural children. Criteria for evaluation have been set up through examination of the philosophy governing certain public school programs for rural children, and the philosophy tor religious education of rural children as revealed in certain national and denominational publications on rural church life end education.

An analysis has been made of the Junior Group Grade Curriculum of the Methodist Church for the cycle beginning October, 1949, and extending through September, …

Keep Yourselves In The Love Of God, William J. Hassold Dec 1952

Keep Yourselves In The Love Of God, William J. Hassold

Concordia Theological Monthly

The Letter of Jude is one of the most polemical portions of the New Testament. The purpose of Jude, the brother of the Lord, in writing this letter was to appeal to his readers "to contend for the faith which was once for all delivered to the saints" (v.3).

Truth In A Changing World, Leroy C. Rincker Aug 1952

Truth In A Changing World, Leroy C. Rincker

Concordia Theological Monthly

When I survey the beauties of Concordia Seminary and attempt to evaluate its current contributions to the Church, I am impressed with evidences of great changes that have marked the progress of this school during the past thirty years. Its larger enrollment and increasing facilities, its graduate school and mission department, its revised curriculum and wider program, all are evidences of an awareness of opportunities to enter the many doors that are opening to our Church today.
