History Of The Southern States Mission, 1831-1861, Lamar C. Berrett Jan 1960

History Of The Southern States Mission, 1831-1861, Lamar C. Berrett

Theses and Dissertations

The "History of the Southern States Mission, 1831-1861," traces the development of a system of proselyting in the southeastern United States, and its effect on the lives of both missionaries and converts who embraced the principles of the restored gospel taught by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

This study includes an examination of twenty-eight personal missionary journals, and consequently gives a valid picture of Latter-day Saint objectives and the sacrifices necessary to achieve them. Their objectives were to carry the message to the world and build up the Kingdom of God.

To reach their goal, the Mormons …

Early History Of Malad Valley, Glade F. Howell Jan 1960

Early History Of Malad Valley, Glade F. Howell

Theses and Dissertations

The Malad Valley is geographically located in a unique position in the Pacific Northwest. The Bear River and its main affluent, the Malad River, are the only rivers in the Pacific Northwest that drain into the Great Basin, whereas the other streams and rivers of the states of Washington, Idaho, and Oregon empty eventually into the Pacific Ocean. It is also characterized for being the northern end of prehistoric Lake Bonneville, and eventually it was through this valley that an outlet opened to drain the lake. The soil deposits from this lake left a fertile valley, capable of producing most …

A Comprehensive Comparison Of Christ's Teachings On The Doctrine Of Fasting And The Ancient And Present Day Practices Thereof, Alan P. Johnson Jan 1960

A Comprehensive Comparison Of Christ's Teachings On The Doctrine Of Fasting And The Ancient And Present Day Practices Thereof, Alan P. Johnson

Theses and Dissertations

A survey questionnaire was sent to 254 churches in the United States. An analysis of the answers of those giving a positive reply indicates that a great apostasy has taken place regarding the true Christian fast. Only a few small, independent churches seem to even approach Christ's ordained fast.

It is claimed that great health benefits arise from wise periodic fasting. A physiological section analyzes the effects of fasting.

A historical section presents the most important teachings and happenings of Gandhi, early reformers and practioneers, native races of America, U.S. presidents and state governments, early Christian history, and all large …

Benjamin Franklin Stewart, Lifetime Pioneer, Janet Jenson Jan 1960

Benjamin Franklin Stewart, Lifetime Pioneer, Janet Jenson

Theses and Dissertations

Contributions to a knowledge of Latter-day Saint Church history can not only be made from a study of the lives of its great leaders, but such contributions can also be made from a study of some of the local leaders of the Church. Benjamin Franklin Stewart was one of these leaders who gained only local and temporary acclaim. Yet he contributed a life of service to his Church.

A Comparative Study Of Eucharistic Teachings Of The Didache With Canonical, Early Christian, And Non-Christian Literature, Joseph Richard Bennett Jan 1960

A Comparative Study Of Eucharistic Teachings Of The Didache With Canonical, Early Christian, And Non-Christian Literature, Joseph Richard Bennett

Graduate Thesis Collection

In this study it is not the author's aim to attempt to cover the field pertaining to the origin and development of the Eucharist. A vast number of competent works have been vrritten on the subject, but the primary purpose here is to examine the Eucharistic teachings of the Didache in the light of Canonical, early Christian, and non-Christian literature, in an effort to determine if the Didache presents the Eucharist (or Lord's Supper) in its original form as practiced in the primitive Christian Church of the first century. Further, we propose to show how the simplicity of the act …

A History Of The Manti Temple, Glen R. Stubbs Jan 1960

A History Of The Manti Temple, Glen R. Stubbs

Theses and Dissertations

The history of the Manti temple, in a sense, began the first winter the Mormon Pioneers spent in Sanpete Valley. Because of the extreme cold they move to "temple hill" for protection. This same hill later became the site of the temple.

It had been predicted by Heber C. Kimball that a temple would someday be built on this spot. By 1873 plans were being made to this end. Preparations for construction were soon in progress and on April 25, 1877, the site was dedicated by President Brigham Young.

Karl Heim: Panentheism And The Space Of God, Robert C. Whittmore Nov 1959

Karl Heim: Panentheism And The Space Of God, Robert C. Whittmore

Concordia Theological Monthly

Such is the secularism of our century and our society that whoever today wishes to raise the question of God must first find someone interested. Theology in our time is largely a talking of priests and theologians to themselves and a handful of philosophers. Religion is universally tolerated and widely ignored; occasionally it is discussed-dispassionately. But the rest is silence. Rare indeed is the person who now takes religion seriously enough to denounce it. The militant atheist and the anticlerical of earlier ages are gone, and in their place is the serene secularist, secure in the conviction "that he alone …

The Word Of The Lord Grew: The Historical Character Of The New Testament Word, Martin H. Franzmann Aug 1959

The Word Of The Lord Grew: The Historical Character Of The New Testament Word, Martin H. Franzmann

Concordia Theological Monthly

The Word of the Lord grew" -three times in the Book of Acts Luke uses this sentence to sum up a period of the history of the first church (Acts 6:7; 12:24; 19:20). These words are a telling expression of the Biblical conception of the divine Word. Our Lord Himself compared the Word to a seed that is sown and sprouts and grows: 'The seed is the Word of God" (Luke 8:11). The Word of the Lord is a power and is active; it "prevails mightily," as Luke puts it in one of the passages just referred to (Acts 19:20). …

Man's Attitude, By Nature, To Christ As Articulated In The Fourth Gospel, David Ralph Krampitz Jun 1959

Man's Attitude, By Nature, To Christ As Articulated In The Fourth Gospel, David Ralph Krampitz

Bachelor of Divinity

The purpose of this investigation is to determine, on the basis of the Gospel according to St. John, how man, by nature, reacts to Christ. This issue is by no means merely academic. Christ's testimony concerning His Gospel conflicts with at least two situations which exist in our "Christianized" society. For one thing, our Lord told His disciples that the world would hate and persecute them because of His Gospel. Yet, in America today, "Christianity" receives the approval of the majority of people. In the second place, Christ informed His disciples that He had chosen them, not vice versa. The …

An Investigation Of The Hermeneutical Principles Reflected In The De Iustificatione (Article Iv) Of The Apology In Its Interpretation, Use And Application Of Holy Scripture, Randell Tonn Jun 1959

An Investigation Of The Hermeneutical Principles Reflected In The De Iustificatione (Article Iv) Of The Apology In Its Interpretation, Use And Application Of Holy Scripture, Randell Tonn

Bachelor of Divinity

The purpose of this investigation is to answer the question, "What are the hermeneutical principles employed by Philipp Melanchthon in his interpretation of the Holy Scriptures as these principles are reflected in the Fourth Article of the Apology to the Augsburg Confession? "Incidental to this primary question three secondary questions have suggested themselves: 1) How do Melanchthon's hermeneutical principles relate themselves to his theology? 2) How do Melanchthon's hermeneutical principles relate themselves to Patristic and Medieval hermeneutics? 3) How do Melanchthon's hermeneutical principles relate themselves to modern hermeneutics, specifically, modern Lutheran hermeneutics?

The Pauline Concept Of The Body Of Christ And Its Significnace In The Literature Of The Ecumenical Movement, Raymond Schulze

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The task of this study, however, is to move toward an understanding of one aspect of Paul's body theology. " Our concern is not to explain what Paul means by σῶμα nor even what he means by σῶμα τοβ χριοτοῦ, but to discover what he means when he calls the Church σῶμα and σῶμα τοβ χριοτοῦ.

The Scriptual Conception Of Life, Chung An Chin Jun 1959

The Scriptual Conception Of Life, Chung An Chin

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The Christian doctrine of hum.an nature as a section of theology is fundamentally built upon the basis of the divine revelation in Scripture, and looks at .man in his relation to God. Therefore, the study of man's life in theology has its own principle which is different from that of science or philosophy. Since Christian anthropology is based on the divine revelation, there must be no contradiction between theological and scientific know1edge concerning life, but we cannot expect to get every detail of scientific answer of human nature out of the Bible.
