The Wasatch Front In 1869: A Geographical Description, Rodney Dale Griffin Jan 1965

The Wasatch Front In 1869: A Geographical Description, Rodney Dale Griffin

Theses and Dissertations

This study is a geographical description of a specific area at a particular point in history. The year 1869 was chosen for the study of the Wasatch Front because it is a datum point; something to work from. Following the completion of the transcontinental railroad at Promontory, Utah, on May 10, 1869, the typically Mormon society at the Wasatch Front oasis began to be more rapidly integrated to the cultural and economic influences from the East. A geographic study of this area in 1869 focuses attention on the nature of the Mormon civilization and more fully illuminates the effect of …

A Study Of Numinous Experience, Dama C. Cofield

Graduate Thesis Collection

For the past ten years I have worked in the area of Christian education in an ecumenical context. This has afforded me the privilege of participating in many communities of faith as well as the challenge of ministry and leadership in diverse situations. These responsibilities, involving me in the lives and personalities of fellow human beings and the necessity of personal growth to meet the demands of my own life's situations have forced me to examine repeatedly the premises of my own faith and its relevance to life.

The Influence Of The Southern Nevada And Southern Utah Folklore Upon The Writings Of Dr. Juanita Brooks And Dr. Leroy R. Hafen, Pansy L. Hardy Jan 1965

The Influence Of The Southern Nevada And Southern Utah Folklore Upon The Writings Of Dr. Juanita Brooks And Dr. Leroy R. Hafen, Pansy L. Hardy

Theses and Dissertations

Since no writing is entirely objective, it is the contention of this thesis that Dr. Juanita Brooks and Dr. LeRoy R. Hafen, the most authoritative writers of the Southern Nevada and Southern Utah region, were greatly influenced in their writings by the folklore of the region and of the people. The two aspects of folklore which are most prominent in their writings are, first, those which treat the supernatural aspect of divine intervention, and, second, those which surround the struggle for survival.

Folklore stories of divine intervention include the lore of divine aid given in time of great need, divine …

The Serpent Motif In Genesis 3: Some Systematic Implications Drawn From Its Place In The Thought Of Early Israel, John Gienapp Nov 1964

The Serpent Motif In Genesis 3: Some Systematic Implications Drawn From Its Place In The Thought Of Early Israel, John Gienapp

Master of Divinity Thesis

This paper will attempt to explore the meaning of the serpent in Canaanite culture to see if it is likely that the writer of Genesis 3 was opposing Canaanite religion. This paper will first mention some of them any parallels betoken Canaanite and Israelite religion, pointing out particularly the continuing syncretism among the Israelites. Then by an examination of archaeological materials from Palestine, supported by other archaeological data from the Mediterranean area, an attempt will be made to state the meaning of the serpent in Canaanite religion. If it can be shown possible that the serpent in Genesis 3reflects a …

Covenant And Justification In The Old Testament, Walter R. Roehrs Oct 1964

Covenant And Justification In The Old Testament, Walter R. Roehrs

Concordia Theological Monthly

The Lutheran World Federation convention at Helsinki in 1963 was not able to reach agreement on a formulation of the doctrine of justification. This lack of agreement, it is said, does not imply disagreement regarding the doctrine itself, but it resulted from the inability to formulate or present this basic teaching of Scripture to modern man in such a way as to speak to him in terms that are relevant and pertinent to him. This difficulty arises, it is said, particularly because modern man no longer asks Luther's question: "How do I find a gracious God?" but asks: "Is there …

Old Testament Theology As Heilsgcschichte, Arlis John Ehlene

Concordia Theological Monthly

An important group of Old Testament scholars in Germany and America is currently making copious use of the term Heilsgeschichte and the ideas associated with it. Avoided until recently by scientific theologians as suggestive of Biblicism and obscurantism, it has staged a comeback as a key word in some of the most respected scholarly circles.

The Relationship Of The Resurrection Of Jesus Christ To His Work Of Reconcilliation In The Light Of The Covenant Idea, Kenneth Block Sep 1964

The Relationship Of The Resurrection Of Jesus Christ To His Work Of Reconcilliation In The Light Of The Covenant Idea, Kenneth Block

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The problem which this thesis investigates is the relationship of the resurrection of Jesus Christ to His work of reconciliation. The study of this .question is significant because the relationship of these two articles of faith has central importance in God's redemptive acts of salvation.

The author contends that the relationship between resurrection and reconciliation can be seen in the key idea of a covenant. The concept of a covenant is significant in the Old Testament. The Mosaic covenant is the most explicit example. The New Testament writers were thoroughly imbued with Old Testament concepts. To understand the import of …

Jesus Christ: Conservative And Liberal, Erwin L. Lueker Jul 1964

Jesus Christ: Conservative And Liberal, Erwin L. Lueker

Concordia Theological Monthly

Politicians, intellectuals, artists, businessmen, and also theologians are often classified as conservative or liberal. Some are even classified as radical, a term which in its basic meaning is better used to describe the thoroughgoing consistency of both the conservative and the liberal. In naive thought the conservative is the person who sees great value in a situation as it is and seeks to preserve it. The liberal, on the other hand, is a person who sees greater value in new methods, in new thoughts and in new structures. He seeks continually to be in the vanguard of those who break …

Helsinki-After One Year - A Symposium, Unknown

Concordia Theological Monthly

The contemporary movement toward a united world Lutheranism entered upon its present phase only 40 years ago. 1923 at Eisenach, Germany, the Lutheran World Convention was organized after World War I to enable Lutherans to pool their spiritual and physical resources to salvage the battered remnants of many mission fields, to bring relief to millions of sufferers all over the world, and to enable the European Lutheran churches to get back on their feet. After 24 years and another world war the members of the LWC were sufficiently encouraged by past successes to take a long step toward a stronger …
