Ministry To The Single Young Adult, David Prinz Nov 1966

Ministry To The Single Young Adult, David Prinz

Bachelor of Divinity

This paper will attempt to reflect the present concept of ministry to one such human situation and population segment, the life situation of the single young adult in the metropolitan area. This particular population segment and life situation group is relatively new in arriving on the American cultural scene. The postwar baby boom is now entering the young adult period which is categorized with the ages of eighteen through twenty-four. It is difficult to limit the age to twenty four, however, for there are possibililities that the ideals, mode of living and cohesiveness of the group may push the age …

The Implications Of Dialogue For The Preacher, Luke Stephan Nov 1966

The Implications Of Dialogue For The Preacher, Luke Stephan

Bachelor of Divinity

In this paper I will attempt to relate some of the insights which scholars have made concerning the principle of dialogue to the needs of the preacher. I will not attempt to make any exhaustive study of how the principle of dialogue can help the general relations between a pastor and his people, as in the area of pastoral counseling. Such a study could be very fruitful as a topic in itself. I will attempt to center all my attention on the pastor as preacher in the congregation.

The Marxist Concept Of Man: A Christian's Critique, Edward Trost Nov 1966

The Marxist Concept Of Man: A Christian's Critique, Edward Trost

Master of Divinity Thesis

Many problems facing the contemporary church stem from its past and present attempts to dichotomize man. Having split man's person into body and soul, material and spiritual, the church then demands allegiance to "either-or." The decision belongs to man. Either he flees the world and its possessions, or the world and its pleasures possess him. Today, more than ever before, churchmen realize that this decision is not so clearly drawn. Just as he is not exclusively material (the Marxist heresy), so man is not solely spirit (Christianity's overstatement). No longer can categories be labeled so neatly: religious and secular. Never …

Creation And Salvation: A Study Of Genesis 1 And 2, Walter Wegner Sep 1966

Creation And Salvation: A Study Of Genesis 1 And 2, Walter Wegner

Concordia Theological Monthly

The purpose of this study is to highlight the soteriological significance of the Genesis creation accounts. The fourth gospel preserves our Lord's statement about the Old Testament Scriptures in which He declares that they '"bear witness to Me" (John 5:39). The pages of this article reflect the conviction that this declaration of Jesus, which applies to the Old Testament as a whole, is fully applicable also to the creation chapters of Genesis.

Christianity And Nichiren In Japan, Donald Neiswender Jun 1966

Christianity And Nichiren In Japan, Donald Neiswender

Concordia Theological Monthly

There is a force building up in Japan which has a most threatening aspect, no matter whether one views it from East or West, from the base of the church or the base of communism. The throbbing nationalism of this force is antithetical both to the unity needed among free nations and to the enforced internationalism of communism. And since this force is preeminently a religious force, it must appear terribly anachronistic to a believing and practicing communist who believes that man is outgrowing his need of religion. It is also a heart-breaking phenomenon to behold from the viewpoint of …

An Examination Of The Constituent Elements Of Human Nature, Paul R. Lund May 1966

An Examination Of The Constituent Elements Of Human Nature, Paul R. Lund

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

Excerpt: "An age-old problem still facing the church and one which still finds advocates on both sides in modern evangelical thought is the question as to whether man consists of body, soul and spirit or only of body and spirit (or soul). The former position would insist that the constituent elements of man' s nature are three and that there is some essential distinction between the Biblical terms "soul" and "spirit" . The latter position insists that there are only two distinct elements in man's nature and that there is no essential distinction (although many would admit a functional distinction) …

Lutheranism In The Philippines 1952-1966, Herbert Kretzmann May 1966

Lutheranism In The Philippines 1952-1966, Herbert Kretzmann

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The purpose of this research is to outline the history of the work done by missionaries of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod in the Philippines. The study is made in the context of the Christian faith. The writer believes that the God of history led the Lutheran Church to the Philippines. He gives credit for the results attained to God's activity through the Word and Sacraments and the dedicated lives of His people. It is the hope of the writer to present an objective study which can be used to make plans for future Lutheran work in the Philippines with the …

Salvation By Grace: The Heart Of Job's Theology, Alfred Von Rohr Sauer May 1966

Salvation By Grace: The Heart Of Job's Theology, Alfred Von Rohr Sauer

Concordia Theological Monthly

God desires that anyone who fears Him and serves Him should do that gratis, for nothing. Serving God for nothing, fearing God for nothing-that is the theme that runs through the Book of Job. In the prologue (Chs. 1-2) the author states that Job was a man who feared God and eschewed evil. The lord also told Satan in the prologue that His servant Job was a man who feared God and shunned wickedness. So Job was considered a pious, God-fearing man; there was no question about that, even Satan conceded that point. The question, however, was this: What was …

An Inquiry Into The Religious Experience Of The Godly Hebrew In The Old Testament, Dean C. Gonnerman May 1966

An Inquiry Into The Religious Experience Of The Godly Hebrew In The Old Testament, Dean C. Gonnerman

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

The problem under consideration was an inquiry into the nature of the religious experience of the Godly Hebrew in the Old Testament. The pious Hebrew worshipped God according to the dictates of his heart and in keeping with the forms of worship set forth under the Levitical system. It was the nature of this worship experience which was under consideration. The fundamental psychological elements of religious experience were examined as criteria for recognizing and analyzing the essentials of a valid spiritual consciousness as it appeared in the Old Testament. The Biblical study of the problem centered in three general areas: …

The Hopes Of Israel, Roddy Braun May 1966

The Hopes Of Israel, Roddy Braun

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

This thesis seeks to examine in detail Israel' s hopes for the future as they find expression in the Latter Prophets. More specifically, this thesis seeks to investigate the precise forms in which and by which Israel expressed her hopes. It attempts to isolate and to examine the many varying pictures which Israel used to portray her hopes and, to the degree that the material at hand permits, to bring these varying pictures together into something of an organized whole.

Τελειοξ In Paul And Hebrews, Robert Rickus May 1966

Τελειοξ In Paul And Hebrews, Robert Rickus

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

This study is intended to analyze and explain the use of Τέλειος and cognates primarily in the thirteen Pauline Epistles and Hebrews, with specific reference to the problem of semantic uniformity in these epistles. / Although much has been written about individual occurrences of Τέλειος , / the question of the over-all role of Τέλειος terminology has received less attention than it deserves, and where treated, has too often been considered under the category of "perfection," which is not always an appropriate category for understanding individual passages, or recurring themes associated with Τέλειος. The findings of this study will be …

Ideas Of History In The Epistle Of Barnabas, Harold Rast May 1966

Ideas Of History In The Epistle Of Barnabas, Harold Rast

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

In considering the epistle of Barnabas, this thesis will look for the interpretation of the meaning of historical facts rather than for the facts themselves, that is, it will analyze the epistle of Barnabas in terms of Barnabas’ understanding of Geschichte. To consider the epistle in terms of Historie would produce at best meager results. Barnabas is no technical historian with an interest in facts. Something like Tacitus' formal presentation of Roman history from Tiberius to Domitian stands far afield from his purpose. Rather, Barnabas is interested in the meaning or inner side of the historical process. Coming within his …

The Curses Of Deuteronomy 27 As A Sanction In The Covenant Form Of Deuteronomy, Elmer Flor May 1966

The Curses Of Deuteronomy 27 As A Sanction In The Covenant Form Of Deuteronomy, Elmer Flor

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The pericope of curses found in Deut. 27:15-26 presents several striking problems. The word for cursing as used in the pericope has a connotation of terrible doom. The passive form of the verb leaves the agent of the curse undetermined. Therefore it becomes necessary to establish the exact meaning of the word in the Hebrew and other Semitic languages in order to draw the significance of invoking a curse in the ancient world. The question then arises regarding the relationship between the practice of cursing in the Bible and in the ancient Near East.

Besides these problems, the present study …
