A Study Of The Artistic Philosophy Of Mahonri Mackintosh Young, Albert John Swensen

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to determine Mahonri M. Young's philosophy of art as recorded in his personal writings and the writings of his contemporaries—particularly his close friend, Jack Sears.

Magazines, books, newspapers, and miscellaneous unpublished materials such as letters, theses, scrapbooks and personal papers were examined for the purpose of becoming more familiar with the character and personality of Mahonri Young. From these sources of information the following was attempted: (1) to record anecdotes and experiences which may have had some significance on the development of his philosophy, (2) to glean from his own writings his feelings and …

The Mariale Of Saint-Evroul, Agustin Pedrosa Dec 1970

The Mariale Of Saint-Evroul, Agustin Pedrosa

Marian Library Studies

The collection of sermons called the Mariale of Saint Evroul was studied for a doctoral thesis presented to the University of Fribourg (Switzerland) by Father Agustin Pedrosa in 1958.

In his article "El Marial de Saint-Evroul" published in Ephemerides Mariologicae Father Pedrosa dates the collection between 1141/1159 and 1200 and provides a critical edition of two of the 13 sermons.

To help complete this edition, we are publishing here the beginning of the collection: the prologue and the first two sermons; other parts will be published in future issues of Marian Library Studies.

An Evaluation Of The "Affirming Rural Mission" Workshop As A Vital Part Of The Preparation Of Lutheran Pastors For The Town And Country Ministry, Wilbur Gehrke Nov 1970

An Evaluation Of The "Affirming Rural Mission" Workshop As A Vital Part Of The Preparation Of Lutheran Pastors For The Town And Country Ministry, Wilbur Gehrke

Master of Divinity Thesis

The purpose of this paper, first of all, is to examine the many problems faced by the people living in town and country communities. By citing various authorities on the rural church, I will demonstrate how these problems also affect the church in town and country.

Secondly, I will discuss the need of a more specialized training for ministerial candidates for the town and country ministry. My research for this section included a study of the placement of ministerial candidates of The Lutheran Church--Missouri Synod between 1962 and 1967 by Allen Nauss. I also studied the placement of the 1970 …

The Influence Of Archaeological Evidence On The Reconstruction Of Religion In Monarchical Israel, Horace D. Hummel Oct 1970

The Influence Of Archaeological Evidence On The Reconstruction Of Religion In Monarchical Israel, Horace D. Hummel

Concordia Theological Monthly

Early covenant traditions shaped much of Israel’s theological expression even after the wilderness wandering and settlement. The author examines kingship, cult, and prophecy in monarchical Israel and cites archaeological evidence to support his contentions.

The Meaning Of Archaeology For The Exegetical Task, Alfred Von Rohr Sauer Oct 1970

The Meaning Of Archaeology For The Exegetical Task, Alfred Von Rohr Sauer

Concordia Theological Monthly

The author illustrates how archaeological evidence may supplement, clarify, contradict, or confirm historical and geographical statements in the Scriptures. Biblical theologians and archaeologists need to work together in the exegetical task.

Critical scholarship has made many valuable contributions to our knowledge of the Old Testament. A series of examples illustrates this point. We need to be sure that we retain the priority of exegesis over dogmatics.

A Look At The Neb-Ot, Alfred Von Rohr Sauer, Frederick W. Danker Sep 1970

A Look At The Neb-Ot, Alfred Von Rohr Sauer, Frederick W. Danker

Concordia Theological Monthly

A reviewer of the New English Bible (NEB) is inclined to compare this text with that of the 18-year-old Revised Version (RSV) and the new Jerusalem Bible. Before he compares these three versions, he needs to note the difference in backgrounds in each case. The RSV is, of course, not a new translation, but as the name indicates, it is a revision of the old King James Version. Its purpose is to bring the Authorized Version up-to-date, modernizing words and phrases that might not be intelligible to the reader of the 20th century.

Movements In The Church Of England As Reflected In English Prose Fiction Of The Eighteenth Century, William H. Traugott May 1970

Movements In The Church Of England As Reflected In English Prose Fiction Of The Eighteenth Century, William H. Traugott

Doctor of Theology Dissertation

The eighteenth century, known as the Age of Reason in England, saw the effect of intellectual pursuits in the Church of England. Yet, prose fiction presented Anglicanism in an overtly active, working form rather than in a rational system of theologically-oriented statements about Christian teachings. The didacticism of the century's fiction was conducive to reflecting such an image. The purpose of this dissertation is to investigate this prose fiction in terms of movements within the Church.

A Christian Concept Of Anthropology Derived From The Johannine Literature, Alan Lester Wyatt Sr. May 1970

A Christian Concept Of Anthropology Derived From The Johannine Literature, Alan Lester Wyatt Sr.

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

The problem that has been attempted to be resolved by this research was the primary evaluation of the contents of the Johannine literature in order to ascertain its teaching on anthropology with limited reference to the Westminster Confession of Faith and Herman Dooyeweerd's A New Critique of Theoretical Thought.

It was hoped that the Johannine problem would shed light on the most significant problem confronting modern contemplative and speculative philosophical thought which is: ''What is the nature of man ?" Indeed, from the earliest writing of man to the present day, reflections of serious thinkers have filled volumes in an …

Rudolf Bultmann Revisited, Otto W. Heick May 1970

Rudolf Bultmann Revisited, Otto W. Heick

Concordia Theological Monthly

Early in the fifties the writer asked the late Paul Althaus of Erlangen whether in his opinion World War II ushered in a new epoch in the history of theology, as had been the case with the first World War. His answer was no. The emphasis in theology, he felt, had remained unchanged. Seen from the vantage point of the mid-sixties, we know that Althaus was wrong. Gradually through the fifties interest in neoorthodoxy declined. Karl Barth no longer dominated the theological scene. The name of Rudolf Bultmann began to claim primary attention. The historical problems of the New Testament …

The Qumran Meal And The Last Supper, John E. Groh May 1970

The Qumran Meal And The Last Supper, John E. Groh

Concordia Theological Monthly

The presence of "communal meals" among the Covenanters of Qumran has given birth to the question of the relationship of these meals to the Christian Eucharist as instituted by Jesus Christ. Kuhn notes that "the Qumran texts, as well as Josephus, agree that this order had, as its peculiar features, the constantly repeated baths of immersion and the daily communal meal of the community." Josephus describes the meals of the Essenes (presently considered to be the mother group of the Qumran Convenanters).

My comments here are restricted to those biological breakthroughs that will have some theological or moralistic implications. You must, therefore, understand that this restriction eliminates an enormous number of small and some very large advances in the area of basic biological research. Detailed research, for example, on mitochondrial DNA, mechanisms for hydrogenation in photosynthesis, insect photoperiodism, bacterial taxonomy, and phosphorus metabolism by planktonic desmids will all be very exciting and will significantly advance those areas. But there are few if any direct theological; ethical, or philosophical conceptual spin-offs from such studies.

My remarks are structured in three basic areas of …

The Doctrine Of The Church In American Presbyterian Theology In The Mid-Nineteeth Century, David Clyde Jones May 1970

The Doctrine Of The Church In American Presbyterian Theology In The Mid-Nineteeth Century, David Clyde Jones

Doctor of Theology Dissertation

There is considerable unity in the principle with respect to the essential nature of the church, a unity which the theological leaders see as grounded in evangelical theology. However, even with the evangelical principle, perhaps because of it, some differences appear with respect to the church. The main purpose of the writer of this paper is to investigate the roots of those differences. One major problem discovered is a too great reliance on the distinction between the visible church and the invisible church.

A Prolegomenon To New Testament Language In Light Of Contemporary Linguistic Analysis: A Look At Paul's Meaning And Use Of Theological Language In I Corinthians 2:6-16, John Stern

Master of Divinity Thesis

This, then, is the purpose of this study: to look more closely at what scholars in many fields have had to say regarding the matter of human language and its ability to make religious assertions. In an attempt to define this purpose more accurately, it will be necessary to: (a) examine the field of contemporary Linguistic Analysis in light of its historical setting;(b) describe the relationship between the phenomenology of language and religious language; (c) consider the work being done presently in the area of modern linguistic studies in biblical research and see its effect upon the formation of theological …

The Understandings Of Pornography In The Behavioral Sciences And The Lutheran Church--Missouri Synod, Paul Metzler

Master of Divinity Thesis

Some further comments about the intent of this study should help clarify what I am attempting to do. I do not plan to develop a universally valid definition of pornography. My research has led me to see definition itself as one of the issues: In Chapter II where I have presented my findings from the behavorial sciences, I have indicated the attempts of various studies to develop just such a definition. Their variety and differing emphases show that one of the difficulties of dealing adequately with the phenomenon of pornography is determining what qualifies or does not qualify for that …
