Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study is to present the origin and development of the San Juan Mission in southeastern Utah in its work with Indian people, principally since 1940. One of the responsibilities of the San Juan Mission was to teach the Indian people the restored gospel of Jesus Christ. It is also the purpose of this study to show what has been accomplished in regard to the original call and also determine what remains to be completed. The history of the San Juan Mission has been indexed under the following chapter headings: Introduction to San Juan and the Call …

Homosexuals And The Death Penalty In Colonial America, Louis Crompton Jan 1976

Homosexuals And The Death Penalty In Colonial America, Louis Crompton

Department of English: Faculty Publications

This article traces the legislative history of statutes prescribing the death penalty for sodomy in 17th-century New England and in the other American colonies. New England and some middle colonies broke with English legal tradition by adopting explicitly biblical language. After the Revolution, Pennsylvania took the lead, in 1786, in dropping the death penalty.

As the nation prepares to celebrate the bicentennial of the Declaration of Independence, the question of the status of the homosexual in pre-Revolutionary America comes to mind. The Body of Liberties approved by the Colony of Massachusetts Bay in 1641 welcomed refugees seeking to escape "the …

A Study Of The Spiritual Influence Of The Arts On Christian Liturgy: With Special Emphasis On The Impact Of Architecture On Seventh-Day Adventist Worship Practice, Walter O. Comm Jan 1976

A Study Of The Spiritual Influence Of The Arts On Christian Liturgy: With Special Emphasis On The Impact Of Architecture On Seventh-Day Adventist Worship Practice, Walter O. Comm

Doctor of Ministry Projects

From its beginning the Seventh-day Adventist church has taken seriously the commission of Christ to proclaim the gospel to all the world. In this endeavor she has laid emphasis on the spoken word in evangelism. It is not so surprising then that the rather controversial area involving the role of art in the visual proclamation of the gospel has received only passing attention. In view of the keen interest, and in some cases excesses, in art and architecture among the Christian churches today, however, the Adventist church cannot stand aloof. She is bound to be influenced and, therefore, needs to …

New Hope: A Mormon Colony In Central California, Clint Mccready Jan 1976

New Hope: A Mormon Colony In Central California, Clint Mccready

Theses and Dissertations

New Hope was a small Mormon agricultural community in Central California. It was founded in 1846, by Samuel Brannan, on the hope that Brigham Young would make it the center stake of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The approximately twenty farmers at New Hope labored diligently under the illusion that thousands of their brethren would shortly join them. When President Young decided to settle in the Great Basin, the New Hope settlement was terminated that same year: 1847.

Orem, Utah: A Study In Urban Land Use, George G. Shaw Jan 1976

Orem, Utah: A Study In Urban Land Use, George G. Shaw

Theses and Dissertations

Orem, Utah, is a rapidly growing city that is changing from rural to urban land uses. A present inventory of land is important in determining the land use characteristics of the city, the degree of development, and future use of land. A field survey was made of the city and the resultant land use information was computerized for data analysis.

Although Orem City is rapidly changing to urban uses, the city is still largely undeveloped, especially when compared to major urban centers. Agriculture is still the most dominant use of land comprising almost thirty-nine percent of the city. Approximately forty …

The Impact Of Polygamy Upon The Life Of James Yorgason: A Nineteenth-Century Mormon Bishop, Blaine M. Yorgason Jan 1976

The Impact Of Polygamy Upon The Life Of James Yorgason: A Nineteenth-Century Mormon Bishop, Blaine M. Yorgason

Theses and Dissertations

On August 2, 1875, James Yorgason, soon to be the Bishop of the Fountain Green Utah Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, took his first plural wife. In doing so he joined a rather elite group of Mormon men who were known as polygamists. Over the next thirteen years, as he built a financial empire to support them, he took five more plural wives, making him exceptional even among the elite.
But then in 1887 the Edmunds-Tucker law was passed and "The Raid" against Mormon polygamists began, the United States entered a time of monetary crisis …

Saint Thomas And Social Justice, William Ferree S.M. Sep 1975

Saint Thomas And Social Justice, William Ferree S.M.

University of Dayton Review

The modern scientific concept of Social Justice is no older than the month of May of 1931 — the date of the publication by Pius XI of his Encyclical Quadragesimo Anno. It is true that the term “Social Justice” had been coming into increasing use since the middle of the 19th century, but its meaning was fuzzy and ambiguous and amounted to little more than “social problems.” In Pius XI, the term is a scientific renaming of the age-old “legal justice,” which comes down to us across the centuries from the golden age of Greek Philosophy but which, through more …

Natural Law: New Clues For Contemporary Issues, Robert B. Mellert S.M. Sep 1975

Natural Law: New Clues For Contemporary Issues, Robert B. Mellert S.M.

University of Dayton Review

The composite of ethical concerns facing civilization at this point in history seems to indicate that the fundamental ethical issue is no longer that of interpersonal relationships, but that of the man-nature relationship. This is evident not only with regard to the ecological crisis and our concern for establishing an environmental ethics, but also in the implications of some of the new biological advances and the ethical questions they are beginning to generate.
