Rediscovering The Book Of Mormon: Insights That You May Have Missed Before, John L. Sorenson, Melvin J. Thorne Jan 1991

Rediscovering The Book Of Mormon: Insights That You May Have Missed Before, John L. Sorenson, Melvin J. Thorne

Maxwell Institute Publications

This book shares the exciting results of scholarly research on the Book of Mormon undertaken during the 1980s. As an ancient religious text and cultural artifact, the Book of Mormon rewards close analysis along many lines of inquiry. Twenty-three essays by prominent LDS scholars cover such topics as warfare, repentance, Exodus motifs, Hebraisms, kingship, politics, Isaiah, Mormon as editor, chiasmus, covenant renewal, and poetry.

These studies aim to demonstrate that the Book of Mormon contains complex patterns not previously recognized—that is, subtle patterns of style, ideas, history, and actions that, once made visible, shed much light on the power and …

Tinkling Cymbals And Sounding Brass: The Art Of Telling Tales About Joseph Smith And Brigham Young, Hugh Nibley Jan 1991

Tinkling Cymbals And Sounding Brass: The Art Of Telling Tales About Joseph Smith And Brigham Young, Hugh Nibley

Maxwell Institute Publications

The apostle Paul wrote to the Corinthians, “Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal” (1 Corinthians 13:1). Since then, the terms “tinkling cymbals” and “sounding brass” have often been used to signify words of emptiness and confusion – describing perfectly most writings critical of the Latter-day Saints. Trained in history and interested in classical rhetoric, Hugh Nibley brings a broad perspective to his study of anti-Mormon writings.

The Process Of Developing And Implementing A Statement Of Mission In A Church-Owned Institution Using The De-Vau-Ge Gesundkostwerk As An Example, Wolfgang Manfred Witzig Jan 1991

The Process Of Developing And Implementing A Statement Of Mission In A Church-Owned Institution Using The De-Vau-Ge Gesundkostwerk As An Example, Wolfgang Manfred Witzig

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Problem

An organization will only succeed if all its entities contribute to its purpose. With time these entities tend to develop their own objectives, sometimes counteracting the overall mission of the organization. Religious organizations especially seem to encounter this issue. This study examines, in an exemplary way, the purpose of a health-food factory that is owned by the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Germany and attempts to rewrite their statement of mission.

Method

The project examines the historical background of the factory. It indicates the reasons that led to its founding and the changes that took place in the understanding of …

Like Wheatt Arising Green: How The Church Grows And Thrives, Walter R. Bouman Jan 1991

Like Wheatt Arising Green: How The Church Grows And Thrives, Walter R. Bouman

Institute of Liturgical Studies Occasional Papers

(Excerpt)

The theme for the 1991 Institute of Liturgical Studies is taken from the hymn "Now the Green Blade Rises." This wonderful Easter hymn, No. 148 in The Lutheran Book of Worship, concludes each stanza with the refrain, "Love is come again like wheat arising green." The resurrection of Jesus is portrayed as grain which sprouts from seed. The imagery comes from the Gospel of John, from a saying of Jesus, the whole context of which is instructive.

Protestant Bible Translations In India: An Unrecognized Dialogue?, John B. Carman

Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies

During my first visit to Kyoto in the spring of 1980, I was given the privilege of attending a meeting of the committee of scholars supervising one of the two series of translations of Shinran Shonin's works now appearing in English. Except for Dr. Minor Rogers, an American scholar of Shin Buddhism, and myself, all the other participants were Shin Buddhists belonging to the "Western Temple" branch of Shinran's followers. Dr. Dennis Hirota, who has contributed several of the draft translations, is Japanese American. The rest of the group were Japanese. The procedure used by committee to review a draft, …

The Poetic Vision Of "Walden" And The Idea Of Human Freedom In The "Bhagavadgita", Inder Nath Kher

Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies

In his seminal essay on "Nature" (1836) Emerson writes:

"In the woods, a man casts off his years, as the snake his slough, and at what period soever of life is always a child. In the woods is perpetual youth. Within these plantations of God, a decorum and sanctity reign, a perennial festival is dressed, and the guest sees not how he should tire of them in a thousand years."

Thoreau's Walden; Or, Life In The Woods (1854) is more than a tribute to Emersonian ideas; it is a forceful plea for the renewal and regeneration of the self. It …

Viewpoints: Art And Architecture As Locus For Dialogue: Inter-Religious Dialogue Through Art, Caroline Mackenzie

Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies

The epic Ramayana is a central Hindu Scripture, which, unlike the Vedas and Upanisads, has been accessible to all sections of the Society. The story originated from an oral tradition and was written down by the sage Valmiki. The date is disputed and could be anything between 1500 and 200 BC. It is said to be the "adikavya", the first and the ideal poem.
