Brother Brigham Challenges The Saints, Hugh Nibley Jan 1994

Brother Brigham Challenges The Saints, Hugh Nibley

Maxwell Institute Publications

This volume in the collected works of Hugh Nibley features the gifted Latter-day Saint scholar’s reflections on the thoughts of Brigham Young regarding politics, education, leadership, and the environment. Nibley has brought together a priceless collection of the early Mormon leader’s counsel to the Saints of his era—counsel that is still relevant today. Add to these prophetic insights the scholarship and plain speaking that characterize Dr. Nibley’s works and the result is an eye-opening and sobering invitation to reevaluate our priorities.

The timeliness of Brigham’s counsel on these topics will quickly become apparent to readers, as will the unique insights …

The Lord's Banquet: Resources, Problems And Perspectives From The New Testament, Edgar Krentz Jan 1994

The Lord's Banquet: Resources, Problems And Perspectives From The New Testament, Edgar Krentz

Institute of Liturgical Studies Occasional Papers

(Excerpt)

The New Testament provides the fundamental basis for the church's celebration of the Lord's Supper and, at the same time, the major source from which to critique aspects of the church's Eucharistic practice today. It is important to hear the New Testament as carefully as possible, in all its variety, in order to understand the New Testament elements that go to make up contemporary Eucharistic practice and theology. In what I do today I will carry out my role as a New Testament scholar: to hear the New Testament in all its variety and diversity as an aid in …

Ashram: A Contextualized Model For Discipling The Hindus Of Tamil Nadu, Poovelingam R. Solomon Jan 1994

Ashram: A Contextualized Model For Discipling The Hindus Of Tamil Nadu, Poovelingam R. Solomon

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Problem. "Make disciples of all nations" is the commission Christ gave His disciples before His ascension. In obedience to this command, the gospel has been preached in India since the arrival of Apostle Thomas in A.D. 51. For the past four hundred years Christian missionaries have tried various methods to reach the Hindus, with little success. According to a recent census, 82.64 percent of the population of India still remains Hindu, with only 2.43 percent adhering to Christianity. Therefore, discipling Hindus still remains a great challenge to the Church in India. The institutional and social-gospel approaches followed by Christian missionaries …

Stewardship Practices In Kenya With Proposed Solutions, Absalom N. Birai Jan 1994

Stewardship Practices In Kenya With Proposed Solutions, Absalom N. Birai

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Problem

Although the Seventh-day Adventist church in Kenya has over three hundred thousand believers, the annual statistical reports indicate that its return of tithes and offerings does not correspond with its large membership. This study was undertaken to survey its giving patterns so as to discover possible weaknesses, to find ways of overcoming such weaknesses, and to promote faithful stewardship.

Method

To create a better concept of the stewardship of tithes and offerings an attempt was made to examine how tithes and offerings were practiced during the Old Testament era, intertestamental period, New Testament period, and by Ellen G. White. …

Improving The Understanding And Practice Of Country Living In The Georgia Central Korean Sda Church, Martin Byung Cho Rho

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Problem

The message of country living has been repeatedly stressed throughout the Spirit of Prophecy counsels, and there has been a problem in understanding and applying the message of country living among Korean SDA members in Korea and North America. The effect of this misunderstanding has produced many problems in the area of church growth and church leadership.

Method

This project report examined the historical background of Ellen G. White’s counsels of country living and studied the writings of Ellen White regarding country living in relation to city mission. This study involved a workshop and survey for evaluation. This project …

An Investigation Of Satanic Influences Upon Physically, Emotionally, And Spiritually Disturbed Christians: Selected Case Studies, Clifford N.R. Quantz Jan 1994

An Investigation Of Satanic Influences Upon Physically, Emotionally, And Spiritually Disturbed Christians: Selected Case Studies, Clifford N.R. Quantz

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Problem

This project emerged out of a sincere desire to find answers to the physical, emotional, and spiritual bondage that plagued Christians. After many years of pastoral ministry, I was convinced that something was not complete in my ministry to these troubled people. Traditional counseling methods I had been taught were ineffective in breaking these bondages. An honest soul search, and a new look at the ministry of Jesus and the apostles exposed this one area of neglect in my ministry. As an Evangelical I believed in the biblical account of evil spirits, but was not really aware of their …

Reflections On Religious Pluralism In The Indian Context, Margaret Chatterjee Jan 1994

Reflections On Religious Pluralism In The Indian Context, Margaret Chatterjee

Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies

Does pluralism in aesthetic and religious judgements necessarily lead to relativism? The writer takes the view that (a) religious pluralism does not only reveal itself in diversity of judgements but in other diversities as well; (b) such diversities suggest relativity rather than relativism. The pluralities invite not aggregation or toleration so much as understanding.

The Dalits, Religions And Interfaith Dialogue, A.M. Abraham Ayrookuzhiel Jan 1994

The Dalits, Religions And Interfaith Dialogue, A.M. Abraham Ayrookuzhiel

Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies

The Dalits of India who follow different religious traditions are beginning to come together these days as one people. While their main concern is to fight economic, political and cultural marginalization, what it means to the religions to which they belong is the question raised in this paper. In order to answer this, we should first have an idea of the kind of questions and problems they raise with respect to different religions. Thereafter we can proceed to some of the implications of this process for interfaith understanding and cooperation.
