Background/Purpose: Some studies have reported on the influence of proximal (shoulder, elbow, and forearm) and distal (hand and fingers) upper limb function on self-care skills; however, the possibility of a spurious correlation caused by the level of function of the other affected region (proximal or distal) was not eliminated. This study investigated the partial correlations between the proximal or distal function of the affected upper limb with self-care skills after controlling for the effect of the other affected region.
Methods: This retrospective cross-sectional study included 53 patients with stroke. We examined the relationship between the proximal or distal Fugl–Meyer Assessment- …

Rehabilitation Practice and Science
Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is the most common peripheral entrapment neuropathy but current conservative treatments are unsatisfactory. Recently, clinical trials using ultrasound-guided regenerative injection with 5% dextrose water or platelet-rich plasma have reported clinically and statistically significant benefits compared to current conservative treatments for the treatment of CTS. Regenerative injection for CTS is increasingly being utilized, proportional to the worldwide expansion of skills in the use of ultrasound guidance for precise injection and localization, and due to accumulating evidence that it enhances the success rate of conservative treatment, and reduces the rate of surgery. In this narrative review, our goals …

Ultrasonography Contributing To The Diagnosis And Treatment Of Ischial Bursitis–A Case Report, Fan Mei, Yu-Shan Fu, Lin-Fen Hsieh
Rehabilitation Practice and Science
A 59-year-old woman presented with persistent right buttock pain, exacerbated by prolonged sitting due to her occupation in watch repair. Physical examination revealed tenderness at the right ischial tuberosity and frictional melanosis. Ultrasound identified an anechoic, compressible mass in the region, a notable finding given the rarity of such detailed imaging in ischial bursitis cases. We performed ultrasound-guided aspiration and corticosteroid injection, resulting in significant symptom relief. The patient also received recommendations for physical therapy and lifestyle adjustments. Follow-up confirmed resolution of fluid and pain. This case highlights the important role of ultrasound in diagnosing and managing ischial bursitis.

Research outputs 2022 to 2026
People who experience a stroke are at a higher risk of recurrent stroke when compared with people who have not had a stroke. Addressing modifiable risk factors like physical inactivity and poor diet has been shown to improve blood pressure, a leading contributor to stroke. However, survivors of stroke often experience challenges with accessing risk reduction services including long wait lists, difficulty with transportation, fatigue, impaired function, and diminished exercise capacity. Providing health interventions via a website can extend the reach when compared with programs that are only offered face to face or via real-time telehealth. Given global challenges of …

Biomechanics, Strength, And Physical Function After Surgical Repair Of Rotational Ankle Fractures, Benjamin Brightwell
Theses and Dissertations--Kinesiology and Health Promotion
Ankle Fractures account for approximately 9% of all lower extremity fractures and incidence continues to rise. Up to 53% of ankle fractures require surgical intervention. Impaired physical function is one of the most reported and observed lasting effects of surgically repaired ankle fractures. Additionally, limited physical capacity and function have been identified as the primary threats to health-related quality of life after surgical repair of ankle fractures. These impairments to physical capacity and functionality can last longer than 5 years after surgery. Since surgery typically successfully restores stability and congruency of the talocrural joint, these poor long-term outcomes are an …
