The Experience Of Occupational Therapists And Physiotherapists Using A Prototype, Evidence-Informed Online Knowledge Translation Resource To Learn About Patient-Defined, Personally-Meaningful Chronic Pain Rehabilitation, Katrina J. Liddiard, Annette J. Raynor, Cary A. Brown

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Purpose: Chronic pain is a complex biopsychosocial experience, and rehabilitation helps people to manage pain, and restore valued life roles. Evidence suggests that more positive outcomes occur when clients perceive their rehabilitation to be meaningful. People with chronic pain describe rehabilitation as personally-meaningful when they develop a genuine connection with a credible therapist who they see as a guiding partner, and when rehabilitation holds personal value, is self-defined, and relevant to their sense of self-identity. This paper presents a qualitative study of therapists’ experience using an e-learning package on patient-defined, personally-meaningful rehabilitation. Methods: A qualitative descriptive design was used to …

Low Back Pain And The Lumbar Multifidus Muscle, Richard E. Sroka Jan 2024

Low Back Pain And The Lumbar Multifidus Muscle, Richard E. Sroka

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

Low back pain (LBP) is common, debilitating, and costly to treat. In the United States alone, LBP treatment costs are estimated at 100-200 billion annually. Physical therapists often provide conventional core strengthening exercise (CCSE) to address the symptoms of LBP. On the other hand, however, a low rate of success is reported for individuals treated for their LBP. Despite numerous studies conducted on LBP treatments, patient outcomes are mixed and 60-86% of people have recurrent LBP episodes. This rating may be attributed to the complexity of the exercise that makes correct performance challenging and can potentially reduce patient compliance. An …

Occupational Therapy | MSOT Capstone Projects

The purpose of this study is to expand the knowledge of barriers to play for graduate students. The research question asked, what are the barriers to play experienced by graduate students? Play is a complex term that is unique to the individual. Although subjective, existing literature gives suggestions as to what play can mean or feel like to the individual participating. Brown (2009), notes that the definition of play should be experienced rather than defined as it is distinctive to each individual. Van Vleet and Feeney (2015) describe play as being the purpose of amusement, fun or to have energetic, …
