Trauma-Informed Pedagogy: The Prevalence Of Trauma Among Students In A Master Of Science Program In Occupational Therapy, Amelia Wilson, Ruth Chen, Michelle P. Phoenix, Sarah Wojkowski, Sandra Vanderkaay
Journal of Occupational Therapy Education
Trauma impacts learning at all stages of education and can be particularly problematic at post-secondary levels and for people from equity-deserving groups. Understanding trauma can support effective teaching and learning. Research suggests that students who have experienced trauma may be more likely to enter healthcare professional programs. Research specific to occupational therapy (OT) students who have experienced trauma is limited. The purpose of this study was to explore the prevalence of trauma among Master of Science (MSc) OT students at a Canadian university. The Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ) was selected for data collection. CTQ is a validated retrospective, self-report tool …

The person, environment, and therapist (PET) Principle is an innovative teaching strategy designed to improve recall of foundational information, facilitate critical thinking, and improve self-efficacy of student and novice therapists. Specifically, the PET Principle is a microlearning strategy that helps students and novice therapists break down segments of a treatment session using an acronym to promote a "just-in-time” thinking process. Therefore, they learn to consider all aspects of the person, environment, and therapist before, during, and after therapy sessions. To evaluate the effectiveness of the PET Principle and self-efficacy after learning the PET Principle, an 11-item survey containing nine forced-choice …

Alpha Omega Alpha Research Symposium Posters
Introduction
Gait training in physical therapy is a common standard of practice for new lower limb prosthetic users. Progress is typically assessed through functional outcome measures such as the 10-meter or 6-minute walk tests1. While these tests measure walking speed and endurance, they fall short of capturing gait quality or quantifying gait parameters which literature shows to be of therapeutic value 2,3. Routine access to quantitative gait assessment could provide clinicians with benchmarks to optimize treatment interventions. Traditional gait analysis systems require specialized equipment making them very resource-intensive and inconvenient to operate. Using human pose estimation techniques, we have developed …

Physical And Psychosocial Factors Related To Firefighter Musculoskeletal Disorders, Jennifer Ellen Tinsley Kubala
Theses and Dissertations--Rehabilitation Sciences
Career firefighters must perform physically and psychologically challenging duties in unpredictable and dangerous conditions. Previous investigations have found that firefighters suffer nearly 4 times the recorded musculoskeletal disorders (MSD) and workplace injuries compared to private and public sector workers, and take approximately 1.5 days longer to return to normal work. Thus, the burden of firefighter MSD experiences has been a growing area of exploration. The few investigations that have concurrently examined physical and psychosocial consequences experienced by firefighters have found a positive relationship between increased occupational stress reports and MSD experiences. However, these investigations, as well as those that individually …
