Respiratory deficits after C2 hemisection (C2Hx) have been well documented through single-sex investigations. Although ovarian sex hormones enable enhanced respiratory recovery observed in females 2 wk post-C2Hx, it remains unknown if sex impacts spontaneous respiratory recovery at chronic time points. We conducted a longitudinal study to provide a comprehensive sex-based characterization of respiratory neuromuscular recovery for 8 wk after C2Hx. We recorded ventilation and chronic diaphragm electromyography (EMG) output in awake, behaving animals, phrenic motor output in anesthetized animals, and performed diaphragm muscle histology in chronically injured male and female rodents. Our results show that females expressed a greater recovery …

Noninvasive Estimation Of Skeletal Muscle Oxygen Consumption Rate And Microvascular Reactivity In Chronic Stroke Survivors Using Near-Infrared Spectroscopy, Allison S. Hyngstrom, Jennifer N. Nguyen, David D. Gutterman, Brian D. Schmit, Emilie A. Klevenow, Matthew J. Durand

Understanding post-stroke changes in skeletal muscle oxidative metabolism and microvascular reactivity could help create therapeutic targets that optimize rehabilitative interventions. Due to disuse atrophy, we hypothesized that basal muscle oxygen consumption rate and microvascular endothelial function would be impaired in the tibialis anterior (TA) muscle of the affected leg of chronic stroke survivors compared with the nonaffected leg and versus matched controls. Fifteen chronic stroke survivors (10 females) and 15 matched controls (9 females) completed this study. A near-infrared spectroscopy oximeter measured tissue oxygen saturation (StO2) of the TA in both legs of stroke survivors and the dominant …

Reduced Oxygen Desaturation In The Vastus Lateralis Of Chronic Stroke Survivors During Graded Muscle Contractions, Allison S. Hyngstrom, Jennifer N. Nguyen, Spencer A. Murphy, Stephanie C. Raab, Brian D. Schmit, David D. Gutterman, Matthew J. Durand
Physical Therapy Faculty Research and Publications
Background
Few studies have examined changes in skeletal muscle physiology post-stroke. This study examined changes in tissue oxygen saturation (StO2) of the vastus lateralis (VL) muscle of stroke survivors and age-matched control participants during maximal and submaximal isometric contractions of the knee extensor muscles.
Objectives
We hypothesized that tissue oxygen desaturation (ΔStO2) during knee extensor muscle contractions would be less in the VL in the paretic vs. the non-paretic and control legs.
Methods
Ten chronic stroke survivors (>6 months post-stroke) with lower extremity muscle weakness and 10 age-matched controls completed this prospective cohort study. Maximum …
Prolonged Quadriceps Latency During Gait Early After Anterior Cruciate Ligament Injury Predicts Radiographic Knee Osteoarthritis 6-Years After Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction, Naoaki Ito, Jacob J. Capin, Elanna Arhos, Elizabeth Wellsandt, Ryan T. Pohlig, Thomas S. Buchanan, Lynn Snyder-Mackler
Physical Therapy Faculty Research and Publications
The purpose was to explore quadriceps electromechanical function (quadriceps latency) during gait after anterior cruciate ligament injury as a predictor for radiographic knee osteoarthritis 6-years after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction. Change in latency after preoperative physical therapy was also examined.
Methods
Quadriceps latency (time between peak knee moment and quadriceps electromyography) was calculated before preoperative physical therapy (2.4 [0.5–7.5] months after anterior cruciate ligament injury) and after preoperative physical therapy in 24 athletes. Participants were dichotomized into osteoarthritis (Kellgren and Lawrence grade ≥ 2) and non-osteoarthritis groups at 6-years. Forward selection logistic repression was performed using z-score normalized quadriceps latency …
Measuring Activity Demands On Fatigue In Individuals With Parkinson's Disease, Laura R. Mccray, Kara M. Lee
Measuring Activity Demands On Fatigue In Individuals With Parkinson's Disease, Laura R. Mccray, Kara M. Lee
Graduate Student Scholarship
The functional presentation of those with Parkinson's disease (PD) are complex, varying depending on cognition, physiological deficits, and support network. This study assesses the perceptions of fatigue across individuals with Parkinson's disease with different clinical presentations to guide clinicians in their selection of evidence-based interventions to facilitate greater functional outcomes. A mixed-methods design was used to collect data on the mental and physiological perceptions of fatigue, utilizing surveys and physiological measures such as heart rate. Participants were recruited from a community group targeting those with PD with inclusion criteria being a diagnosis of PD. Results for both heart rate and …

Importance: There is a need for a pediatric hand function test that can be used to objectively assess movement quality. We have developed a toy-based test, the Bead Maze Hand Function (BMHF) test, to quantify how well a child performs an activity. This is achieved by assessing the control of forces applied while drawing a bead over wires of different complexity.
Objective: To study the psychometric properties of the BMHF test and understand the influence of age and task complexity on test measures.
Design: A cross-sectional, observational study performed in a single visit.
Setting: Clinical research laboratory.
Participants: Twenty-three participants …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Background: The growing importance of telehealth in multiple sclerosis (MS) necessitates an understanding of current practices and training needs of health professionals. We aimed to evaluate the knowledge, preparedness, and training preferences of Australian allied health professionals (AHPs) in telehealth exercise therapy and exercise behavioural change for MS patients to inform the development of educational training. Methods: An online survey was completed by 58 Australian AHPs, including 34 physiotherapists, 14 exercise physiologists, and 10 occupational therapists, focusing on their current practices, preparedness, and training preferences in telehealth exercise and behavioural change for MS. The survey included multiple-choice, Likert scale, and …

In recent years studies have revealed varying degrees of dysfunctional thoughts as related to career among young people. It is distorted cognitive processes that truncate the ability to make clear cut decisions regarding career. This conceptual article explores the impact of dysfunctional career thought on mental health among college students seeking counselling. This paper tries to understand how cognitive distortion regarding career impact mental health and means to mitigate this challenge. This study draws on expert opinions and experiential knowledge, underpinned by an extensive review of scholarly literature, peer evaluations, and document analysis in the field of advanced career. The …
Use Of Ultrasound For Identification Of Musculoskeletal Injury In Active Populations, Kathleen Karen Hogan
Use Of Ultrasound For Identification Of Musculoskeletal Injury In Active Populations, Kathleen Karen Hogan
Rehabilitation Sciences Theses & Dissertations
Lower extremity tendinopathies and fasciopathy conditions are prevalent amongst sedentary individuals,1,2 athletes,3,4 elite runners,5,6and military personnel7 and can lead to chronic disability and reduction in quality of life. 8,9 Both tendinopathy and fasciopathy are thought to be mechanical in nature and caused by acute or chronic overloading leading to a disruption in the uniformity of the soft tissue structure. Ultrasound imaging has gained popularity in the last decade among many sports medicine clinicians to gain information regarding tissue structure for musculoskeletal injury (MKSI) management. Ultrasound imaging allows for the evaluation of in-vivo structures and at …
