Using Spectrogram To Evaluate Dysarthric Treatment Effectiveness, Shu-Er Lee, Ma-Li Huang, Tao-Chang Hsu

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Dysarthria may be defined as a group of speech disorders resulting from disturbance in muscular control due to damage in the central or peripheral nervous system. It encompasses coexisting neurogenic disorders of several or all the basic processes of speech - respiration, phonation, articulation, resonance and prosody. Although auditory discrimination can provide subjective evaluation of dysarthric speech before and after treatment, objective evaluation can help us to establish standards for clinical evaluation of acoustic charade- ristics.Six dysarthric and four normal control subjects were evaluated in this study. Sound spectrographic analysis was done of speech samples in vowel prolongation /ah/, oral …

Home Adaptations For Persons With Chronic Disabilities: An Educational Model., Ruth E. Levine, Laura N. Giltin

Department of Occupational Therapy Faculty Papers

This paper offers a method by which to train students in the provision of culturally relevant, in-home environmental adaptations for persons with chronic disabilities. On the basis of a theoretical framework, the student therapist learns about the client's life-style and offers adaptations that evolve from a collaborative problem-solving process. The training process has been developed and refined over a 3-year period. A case study illustrates the student's application of theory and practice and the outcome for the client of this service provision approach.

Play Behavior And Occupational Therapy., Roseann C Schaaf Jan 1990

Play Behavior And Occupational Therapy., Roseann C Schaaf

Department of Occupational Therapy Faculty Papers

The effectiveness of treatment methods on a person's ability to carry out occupational roles competently is of interest to occupational therapists. This case study demonstrated how play, as an occupational role of childhood and as a measure of competence, can be used to evaluate the effectiveness of occupational therapy that uses a sensory integrative approach. The positive changes in C.C.'s play behavior support the basic philosophy of sensory integration, which states that an increase in sensory integrative functions will improve competence (in this study, competence is defined as play), that is, that a person will have the ability to carry …

The Effects Of Added Purpose On Fine Motor Performance In Learning Disabled Children, Sarah Lynn Austin Dec 1989

The Effects Of Added Purpose On Fine Motor Performance In Learning Disabled Children, Sarah Lynn Austin

Masters Theses

The idea that occupations which offer added levels of purpose elicit a high quality of performance is widely accepted within occupational therapy. In this experiment involving fine motor performance, fifty-three learning disabled children were randomly assigned to two groups. It was hypothesized that children cutting out a circle, presented as a wheel which would complete a paper truck, would cut more accurately than those who cut out the same circle without the suggestion of it being used as a wheel. Accuracy was assessed by measuring the area of the children's cutting errors. The experimental design included the use of a …
