The Influence Of Religion And Spirituality On Rehabilitation Outcomes Among Traumatic Brain Injury Survivors, Brigid Waldron-Perrine

Wayne State University Dissertations

The long-term consequences of traumatic brain injury affect millions of Americans, many of whom report using religion and spirituality to cope. Little research, however, has investigated how various elements of the religious and spiritual belief systems affect rehabilitation outcomes. The present study sought to assess the use of specifically defined elements of religion and spirituality as coping resources in a sample of traumatically brain injured adults. Furthermore, various mechanisms by which religion and spirituality may affect outcome were explored.

The sample included 88 adults with brain injury from 1 to 20 years post injury and their knowledgeable significant others (SOs). …

Physical Therapy Faculty Articles and Research

Patients with end stage renal diseases (ESRD) on hemodialysis (HD) have high morbidity and mortality due to multiple causes, one of which is dramatically higher fall rates than the general population. The mobility mechanisms that contribute to falls in this population must be understood if adequate interventions for fall prevention are to be achieved. This study utilizes emerging noninvasive, portable gait, posture, strength, and stability assessment technologies to extract various mobility parameters that research has shown to be predictive of fall risk in the general population. As part of an ongoing human subjects study, mobility measures such as postural and …

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Spinal arteriovenous malformations is a rare disease. The initial signs are usually in the forms of nonspecific sensory symptoms such as pains and parasthesia; therefore, it is difficult to conclusively diagnose this disease. Here, we report the case of a 30-year-old woman who suffered from a sudden weakness in the 4 limbs 15 years ago. The symptoms subsided after supportive care; she was discharged from a local hospital without further follow ups. Approximately 5 years ago, she had a sudden attack of pains in her left shoulder. The symptoms rapidly progressed to paralysis of the 4 limbs. She was sent …

The Characteristics Of Visual Perception In Children With Diplegic Cerebral Palsy, Fang-Ling Wang, Ling-Fu Meng, Wan-Ju Tu Dec 2009

The Characteristics Of Visual Perception In Children With Diplegic Cerebral Palsy, Fang-Ling Wang, Ling-Fu Meng, Wan-Ju Tu

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Visual perception is the ability to manipulate and integrate the visual information received by brain. Early damage involving the structures of visual perception in the brain will give rise to visual perceptual impairment. The periventricular area is one of those structures related to visual perception. Nearly all preterm infants with spastic diplegia exhibit cystic periventricular leukomalacia. Therefore, it has been wondered if children with diplegic cerebral palsy were at risk of visual perceptual impairment. In fact, behavioral studies have shown that many children with diplegic cerebral palsy demonstrate weakness in some subtests of visual perceptual evaluation. Visual closure, figure-ground, and …
