Advance Care Planning In Rehabilitation: Training Nurses And Social Workers To Facilitate Discussions, Celeste Christiansen
Advance Care Planning In Rehabilitation: Training Nurses And Social Workers To Facilitate Discussions, Celeste Christiansen
Student Scholarly Projects
Practice Problem: Patients and healthcare workers fail to hold advance care planning (ACP) discussions. Social workers perceive a lack of time and feel unprepared to hold ACP conversations.
PICOT: The PICOT question that guided this project was: Do patients in acute inpatient rehabilitation (P) who receive education and resources about ACP from trained nurses and social workers (I) accept and participate in ACP (O) compared to prior standards of care (C) while on the rehabilitation unit (T)?
Evidence: The public and healthcare workers have limited knowledge of ACPs and their role in these discussions. People are more likely to hold …

Providing End-Of-Life Counseling: A Narrative Inquiry, Carol Hecht, Sibyl West
Adultspan Journal
This qualitative study aimed to address the gap in the research related to end-of-life counseling by exploring the experiences of counselors working with clients at end of life. While counseling literature and education are lacking regarding end of life, many counselors will work alongside clients approaching death. The purpose of this study was twofold: (a) to better understand the nuanced experiences of counselors providing end-of-life counseling and (b) to explore the supports and preparations helpful for counselors to provide end-of-life counseling. A narrative approach, using the Listening Guide (Gilligan, 2015), was employed to analyze and present the stories of three …
Considerations Of Medicare Telehealth Services With Older Adults, Sonah Kho, Amanda Dediego
Considerations Of Medicare Telehealth Services With Older Adults, Sonah Kho, Amanda Dediego
Adultspan Journal
The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic set in motion a rapid expansion of mental health services offered via telehealth. With this rapid expansion came the need to examine how policy and practice should be shaped in a future where telehealth is considered common in counseling practice. For counselors to understand how to support older adult clients in using telehealth services, they must understand telehealth policy. Following the eligibility of licensed counselors to participate in Medicare, counselors need to stay abreast of regulatory changes regarding restrictions and regulations on use of telehealth for mental and behavioral health services, including video and …
Acute Effects Of Multi-Joint Eccentric Exercise On Lower Extremity Muscle Activation Measured During Land And Water Walking, Brayden Worley
Acute Effects Of Multi-Joint Eccentric Exercise On Lower Extremity Muscle Activation Measured During Land And Water Walking, Brayden Worley
All Graduate Reports and Creative Projects, Fall 2023 to Present
Although prior literature has established the preliminary clinical benefits of aquatic exercise across various clinical populations, there is a need to explore the potential for including aquatic-based movement as a key component of a multi-modal approach toward improving mobility and reducing fall risk. Eccentric exercise may complement aquatic exercise given that movements performed in water immersion tend to be low impact. Eccentric exercise may also improve the passive stiffness of lower extremity extensors, which gives an additional rationale for the potential of eccentric exercise to reduce fall risk when combined with aquatic exercise. There may also be an acute response …

The Validation Of Remote-Synchronous And Remote-Asynchronous Physical Performance-Based Outcome Measurements, Kieran James Mullen
The Validation Of Remote-Synchronous And Remote-Asynchronous Physical Performance-Based Outcome Measurements, Kieran James Mullen
Master's Theses (2009 -)
Performance-based outcome measures are used by clinical and research communities to identify health risks, assess change in physical function over time, and assess the success of treatment. With the onset of COVID-19, remote assessments were sought as alternatives to in-person testing, however there is inadequate literature on the validity of remote performance-based outcome measurement to assess physical function. Current literature is limited to small cohort studies, and none take advantage of novel comparison of agreement methodology. This study assessed the level of agreement between three methods of performance-based outcome data collection: in-person data collection, remote synchronous data collection, and remote …

Assessment Of Gait, Balance, And Falls In Individuals With Neurodegenerative Diseases, Lauren Tueth
Assessment Of Gait, Balance, And Falls In Individuals With Neurodegenerative Diseases, Lauren Tueth
WUSM Theses and Dissertations – All Programs
Neurodegenerative diseases are a group of disorders that impact the brain and lead to neuronal degeneration. This degeneration causes many different symptoms, which are often grouped into motor, cognitive, and psychiatric domains. Individuals with these disorders can experience symptoms from multiple domains at the same time, but little is known about how these distinct symptoms may impact each other.
In Chapter 2, we explored the intersection of balance and cognitive impairment in individuals with Alzheimer disease (AD). AD is traditionally discussed in the context of the dementia symptoms, but people with AD also experience motor deficits. Falls are a huge …

Exploring Complex Daily Tasks In Preclinical Alzheimer Disease, Audrey A. Keleman
WUSM Theses and Dissertations – All Programs
Alzheimer disease (AD) is a slowly progressive neurodegenerative disorder marked by a gradual decline in cognitive functions and ability to perform daily activities. AD begins with a clinically silent period in which pathological abnormalities accumulate in the brain before cognitive impairments occur (i.e., while individuals remain cognitively normal [CN]). This stage is known as preclinical AD and can last up to two decades. It can be identified by measuring biomarkers of AD using neuroimaging or biofluid techniques. In the United States alone, it is estimated that nearly 46 million individuals are in the preclinical stage of AD and at risk …

Peer-Mediated Family Support Project: Evaluation Of Changes In Family Quality Of Life, Preethy S. Samuel, Elizabeth Janks, Nia S. Anderson, Michael Bray, Christina Topolewski, Sharon Milberger
Developmental Disabilities Network Journal
The Family Quality of Life (FQOL) approach represents a paradigm shift from fixing to supporting people with intellectual/developmental disabilities (I/DD) by changing the focus from the individual to the family and highlighting strengths rather than deficiencies. Aging family caregivers of individuals with I/DD often encounter obstacles, including accessibility, acceptability, and affordability of services. Little is known about best practices to support aging families of adults with I/DD. Understanding how a state-wide peer-mediated family support project implemented in this study helped improve the FQOL of aging caregivers is important in broadening participation of other caregivers in these types of programs. To …

Occupational Therapy's Role In Preventing Geriatric Learned Dependency Through Caregiver Training, Anna Dediemar
MOT Student Capstones
Occupational therapy (OT) plays an important role in the training of geriatric caregivers to reduce learned dependency and caregiver burden, which can ultimately reduce hospital readmissions. Studies have highlighted the importance of caregiver education and training in promoting independence among geriatric patients, but OT's role in this area has yet to be explored. Caregivers play a crucial role in the geriatric patient's functional progress at home, so it is essential to educate and train them thoroughly to prevent dependency which may lead to negative patient outcomes, longer recovery times, increased risk of injury or complications, and higher readmission rates. The …

Implementing The Positive Approach To Care® Methods As An Effective Training Curriculum For Staff At An Adult Day Center, Delaney Acri
Capstone Projects
Dementia, a neurodegenerative disorder affecting multiple brain regions, significantly disrupts daily life (Feurich, 2023). Occupational therapists, guided by the Occupational Therapy and Performance Framework (OTPF-4), address cognitive and functional challenges in individuals with dementia (American Occupational Therapy Association, 2020). Therapists employ compensatory strategies to enhance quality of life of people with dementia, as well as their family caregivers. Adult day centers serve as valuable resources for family caregivers, offering respite care during working hours. Despite regulations in most states, Michigan lacks specific dementia training laws in some healthcare settings (Burke & Orlowski, 2015). As a result, many facilities that serve …
