[Review Of] Kristin Herzog. Women, Ethnics, And Exotics : Images Of Power In Mid·Nineteenth Century American Fiction, Gretchen M. Bataille Jan 1986

[Review Of] Kristin Herzog. Women, Ethnics, And Exotics : Images Of Power In Mid·Nineteenth Century American Fiction, Gretchen M. Bataille

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

Herzog examines literary works of the mid-nineteenth century which reverse values, transcend stereotypes, and demand a reevaluation of the roles of "women, ethnics, and exotics" in fiction as well as reality. The ethnics are blacks and Indians; the exotics Herzog defines as " strikingly out of the orindary [ordinary]" or " excitingly strange" characters. Images of women are similar to the images of the "Noble Savages" and other non-white people in that all are considered "natural," more innocent or more demonic, more devine [divine] and more terrifying than white males . So too are they viewed as more passive, less …

[Review Of] Beverley Ormerod. An Introduction To The French Caribbean Novel, Charlotte H. Bruner

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

Beverley Ormerod displays real expertise in An Introduction to the French Caribbean Novel. She is a West Indian herself, and she knows the background and culture of the Caribbean: its African slave origins and the present quest for pan-Caribbean identity. After post-graduate research at the Bibliotheque Nationale in Paris , she earned her doctorate in French at Cambridge University. When necessary, she translates the French originals into English. She also knows various creoles of the islands and appreciates the linguistic variety there. She has taught Caribbean literature for twenty years.

[Review Of] Emmanuel Ngara. Art And Ideology In The African Novel, Jean Bright Jan 1986

[Review Of] Emmanuel Ngara. Art And Ideology In The African Novel, Jean Bright

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

The sub-title of this enigmatic book is "A Study of the Influence of Marxism on African Writing." The first of the two parts of the books deals primarily with definitions of Marxist aesthetics. For a serious work, not only are the cliches and terminology tiresome but the choice of quotations is unfortunate. Ngara quotes Marx's and Engel's opinion that Dickens, Thackeray, Emily Bronte and Gaskell wrote novels "whose graphic and eloquent pages have issued to the world more political and social truths than have been uttered by all the professional politicians, publicists and moralists put together." Ngara adds a pronouncement …

[Review Of] Paule Marshall. Praisesong For The Widow, Delo Washington Jan 1986

[Review Of] Paule Marshall. Praisesong For The Widow, Delo Washington

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

Paule Marshall's Praisesong for the Widow is an account of maturation or, put another way, of a black woman's willingness to confront her emergent self. Tastefully groomed, sixty-four year old Avatarra " Avey" Johnson leaves her suburban New York home to vacation with two friends on a West Indies cruise. Her decision to interrupt her plans, shortly after arriving at one of the destinations, is a surprise to everyone. Avey is compelled to discount the material investment she has made in the trip in order to follow a mind that has been haunted by dreams of her great aunt Cuney.

[Review Of] Edward A. Tiryakian And Ronald Rogowski, Eds. New Nationalisms Of The Developed West: Toward Explanation, Mary A. Ludwig Jan 1986

[Review Of] Edward A. Tiryakian And Ronald Rogowski, Eds. New Nationalisms Of The Developed West: Toward Explanation, Mary A. Ludwig

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

Tiryakian and Rogowski have edited a strong and useful collection of nine theoretical and seven comparative articles on nationalism in advanced industrial societies in the West. What is new in the presentations in this work is the systematic comparison of a number of nationalist movements that have been treated hitherto as separate cases. The writers are focusing on nationalism in advanced capitalist economies rather than in developing nations or socialist industrial states, so examples are drawn from Quebec and Western Europe. A great strength of the collection lies in the richness of the analysis produced by contributors drawn from a …

Race And Class In American Race Relations Theory, 1894-1939, Vernon Williams Jr. Jan 1986

Race And Class In American Race Relations Theory, 1894-1939, Vernon Williams Jr.

William Monroe Trotter Institute Publications

The purpose of this essay is to identify the origins of the debate between Wilson and Pinkney. The period covered focuses on the years 1894 to 1939 - from the publication of Franz Boas's "Human Faculty as Determined by Race" in the Proceedings of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in 1894, to the publications of Robert E. Park's "The Nature of Race Relations" in 1939. It is my argument that the parameters of the discussion regarding the progressiveness of race relations in the United States were defined during these years, and that all current theories are but …

Boston School Desegregation: The Fallowness Of Common Ground, Robert A. Dentler Jan 1986

Boston School Desegregation: The Fallowness Of Common Ground, Robert A. Dentler

New England Journal of Public Policy

This essay scrutinizes the book by J. Anthony Lukas, Common Ground: A Turbulent Decade in the Lives of Three American Families, to assess whether it presents a valid and reliable account of the issues, people, and events it chronicles. The substantive core of the book is shown to be the politics of Boston public school desegregation. The parts played by the three families in this event are dramatically portrayed but cannot be corroborated and are not interpreted. The parts played by five major policy leaders, when tested against other evidence, are found to be distorted, questionable legends woven in …

The Development Of A Program For Minority Dropout Prevention In The Decatur, Illinois Public School District #61, Priscilla Marjorie Palmer

Masters Theses

The purpose of this field study was to identify the need and present a workable model designed to address minority dropout prevention for the Decatur, Illinois, Public School District #61. The overall district dropout rate at the time this field study commenced was 26.6 percent. However, the dropout rate for minority (Black) males was 43.1 percent and 24.9 percent for minority (Black) females. The data shows that a problem of minority dropouts did exist in Decatur School District #61 and that a preventive program was needed to address this problem. The Program to Improve Student Attendance (PISA), was designed for use …

Many minority ethnic/racial groups in the United States experience higher-than-average unemployment rates, but none approaches the level of unemployment among Native Americans. A report prepared last fall by the Full Employment Action Council, the Lutheran Council U.S. A. and other sponsors documents the ''horrendous" and "devastating" rates of joblessness among both reservation and urban Indians.

In addition, the report, "American Indian Unemployment: Confronting a Distressing Reality, notes that federal assistance programs have been drastically reduced in recent years, leaving Native Americans with income and education levels far below national averages.

The Vanguard

When Rev. Brian (Red) Burchfield went to South Africa, he believed he and his co-pastor/wife Susan were missionaries to that racially-divided nation. Now, however, he understands that he was meant all along to be a missionary to the U.S.

Arriving in Cape Town last January to serve several, small congregations of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in South Africa (ELCSA), Burchfield said they were met with two responses: "a warm and gracious reception and ... an attitude that took for granted that we would be going back to the United States and beginning our real work."

Predictors Of Depressive Symptoms And Unemployed Black Adults, Diane R. Brown, Lawrence E. Gary Dec 1985

Predictors Of Depressive Symptoms And Unemployed Black Adults, Diane R. Brown, Lawrence E. Gary

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Using data from a probability based survey of unemployed Black adults residing in an urban area, this study explores factors related to the presence of depressive symptoms. Findings indicate that depressive symptoms are less among unemployed persons with higher levels of income, education, religiosity, age and satisfactory social support. Age, however, is the single best predictor of depressive symptoms among unemployed Blacks. There were no significant differences by gender.

Dropping Out Of High School: An Inside Look, Michelle Fine Oct 1985

Dropping Out Of High School: An Inside Look, Michelle Fine

Publications and Research

In September, 1984, I began an ethnography of student life in and out of a New York City public high school to figure out why urban students drop out of high school at such extraordinary rates. By December, why urban students stay in high school through graduation struck me as an equally compelling question.

Getting Power Back: Court Restoration Of Executive Authority In Boston City Government, Marcy M. Murninghan Jun 1985

Getting Power Back: Court Restoration Of Executive Authority In Boston City Government, Marcy M. Murninghan

New England Journal of Public Policy

This article chronicles some of the events that occurred when a state and a federal court attempted to disengage from active jurisdiction over two Boston public systems: the public schools and the Boston Housing Authority (BHA). It makes three proposals which, if enacted, would help to keep the courts out of day-to-day management of municipal operations. It also makes some generalizations about the court-agency interplay which are relevant to the postremedial phase of institutional reform litigation. The author uses the term restorative law to describe this court-controlled process of returning power to the executive branch.

Community-Based Housing: Potential For A New Strategy, Rachel G. Bratt Jun 1985

Community-Based Housing: Potential For A New Strategy, Rachel G. Bratt

William Monroe Trotter Institute Publications

While the housing problem in the United States has changed since Franklin Delano Roosevelt proclaimed that "one-third of the nation is ill-housed," it has by no means disappeared. For most low-income people, and to a lesser extent for moderate income people, housing still presents formidable problems.

Academics and housing analysts recognize four major aspects of the housing problem: affordability (ratio of housing costs to income), adequacy (including quality and overcrowding), neighborhood conditions, and availability. Over the past decade, the nature of the country's housing problem has undergone some important transformations.

Until ten years ago the phrase "housing problem" conjured up …
