The Vanguard (Vol. 18, No. 5), July 1971, Lutheran Human Relations Association Of America

The Vanguard

For we are ruled by Christ's love for us, now that we recognize that one man died for all men, which means that all men take part in his death. He died for all men so that those who live should no longer live for themselves, but only for him who died and raised to life for their sake.

No longer, then, do we judge anyone by human standards. Even if at one time we judged Christ according to human standards, we no longer do so. When anyone is joined to Christ he is a new being: the old is …

After the cruel death of their daughter in the racist bombing of the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama, Mr. and Mrs. Chris McNair did not react in bitter hatred. Wanting so much that she would not have died in vain, Chris McNair pleaded: "We must work all the harder to bring about a more decent world for the children who are left."

Nineteen months ago, Federal District Judge Richard B. Austin charged the Chicago Housing Authority with racial discrimination in site selection. He ordered that no more public housing could be built in black neighborhoods until 700 units have been built in white areas.

Since that ruling was issued, there has been no construction of public housing.

The release without trial of eight Black Panthers after two years imprisonment; the concerted efforts of the Justice Department to confine the Berrigans and their colleagues; the massive, indiscriminatory arrests in Washington, D.C. of young people (as well as citizens trying to get to work) with an estimated 80 percent of these arrests illegal; the rigid defense of this government action by high officials - these and similar cases can be cited to raise concern over the heavy-handed pattern of law enforcement and government control that may corrode the foundations of a state, and ultimately shackle and destroy people.

Slavery And Stratification, Lee Andrew Irving Jan 1971

Slavery And Stratification, Lee Andrew Irving

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Racial Justice

Poster using the three colors of the Pan-African flag, showing portrait omage of Dr. Barry Gaither, Curator for the Museumof the National Center of African American Artists. Derivation of previous poster (May 5 1970). May 4, 1970 was the date of the Kent State University campus shootings, where 4 anti-war protestors were shot and killed by the Ohio National Guard. RISD, as well as campuses across the U.S., shut down as students went on strike in protest of the Kent State killings. It is likely that the May 5 lecture was canceled and rescheduled for October 20, 1970 [see May …
