Twentieth Century Negro Poets, Sheila Higgins Aug 1936

Twentieth Century Negro Poets, Sheila Higgins

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

According to Matthew Arnold an open mind is one of the chief essentials for true literary criticism. One is impressed by the truthfulness of this statement when he seeks to evaluate Negro poetry.

The term, Negro poetry, has several interpretations. In its most general sense, the one in which it is used in this paper, it means poetry written by Negroes on any subject. In a more restricted sense it refers to poetry that contains allusions, rhythms, sentiments and idioms more or less peculiar to the Negro. In its narrowest meaning it refers to poetry of racial protest and self-exhortation. …

Poverty And Problems Of The Mexican Immigrant, Joseph M. Santos Jan 1931

Poverty And Problems Of The Mexican Immigrant, Joseph M. Santos

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this introductory chapter is to make clear the intent of the entire study. First of all, no attempt is made at claiming any distinction for originality, as the information contained herein is gathered from books, magazines, newspapers, conversations with experienced business men and labor men, and some from personal observation.

The present unemployment situation causes many people to question our government's policy of leaving our "gates" open to Mexican immigration. Many are the figures that we hear quoted in an effort to bolster personal views on this problem. Dr. Manual Gamio urges a limitation placed on Mexican …

The Status Of The Worcester Negro, Ella L. Vinal Jan 1929

The Status Of The Worcester Negro, Ella L. Vinal

Historical Dissertations & Theses

Challenged by the fact that many of the Negroes of Worcester do on seem to be occupying the places for which they are trained economically or culturally, this study was entered upon in an attempt to discover the true status of the Worcester Negro, to describe the problems which underlie the limitation of his activities, and to define a program whereby he may be led into a more complete realization of his personality, and, unhampered, make his full contribution to the community life of which he is a part. To this end a survey has been made.

This survey, of …

Political Organization Of The Plains Indians, With Special Reference To The Council, Maurice Greer Smith Apr 1925

Political Organization Of The Plains Indians, With Special Reference To The Council, Maurice Greer Smith

University Studies (University of Nebraska) (1888–1984)

Next to sociological field work, ... there are within this branch of study no other investigations so urgently needed as monographs on some definite class of social phenomena or institutions among a certain group of related tribes. A comparative treatment of some social institution as it exists throughout the uncivilized races of the world undoubtedly has value .... But at the same time a comparative study suffers from defects which seem wellnigh inseparable from the prosecution of so great a task. A social institution is not an isolated phenomenon, but is closely connected with a variety of facts. It is …
