The Sacred As The Basis For Human Creativity And Agency In The Black Church, Cheryl Townsend Gilkes
The Sacred As The Basis For Human Creativity And Agency In The Black Church, Cheryl Townsend Gilkes
Trotter Review
Religion is, I believe, the most important site for human creativity, innovation, and agency. In the world of the sacred in any social context, one is able to find the widest variety of human constructions of meaning. Indeed, the true understanding of human diversity may be found in the study of religion and the processes through which people sustain and renew their religious organizations and their religious world views. It is important, I think, to apply these new insights to the study of the African-American religious experience. The Black church, or the collective experience of African-American Christians in the United …
Black Church Politics And The Million Man March, William E. Nelson Jr.
Black Church Politics And The Million Man March, William E. Nelson Jr.
Trotter Review
October 16, 1995 will be recorded as one of the most important days in the political history of African Americans in the United States. This day witnessed the largest mass political demonstration in the history of this nation—the assemblage of more than 1.2 million African-American men in Washington, D.C. under the banner of the Million Man March. Both the size and the overt political objectives of the march set it firmly apart from the pallid, feeble demonstrations in Washington led by the NAACP in the 1980s; in its size and character, the march echoed the focus on power and system …

Western Women’S Travel Writing About The Pacific Islands, Claudia Knapman
Western Women’S Travel Writing About The Pacific Islands, Claudia Knapman
Pacific Studies
Although there has been a revival of interest in nineteenth-century women’s travel writing, this is a neglected area of Pacific scholarship. Though the work of Western women travelers who wrote about the Pacific Islands has been drawn upon by some researchers, this literature has not received attention as a genre, as a body of source material, or as the focus of academic research questions. This article, while neither a detailed analysis of particular writers and their works nor an attempt to delineate the field, uses three categorizations--the realist, the protofeminist, and the orientalist--derived from analyses of women’s travel writing elsewhere …
Indochinese Mental Health In North America: Measures, Status, And Treatments, Thanh V. Tran, Donna L. Ferullo
Indochinese Mental Health In North America: Measures, Status, And Treatments, Thanh V. Tran, Donna L. Ferullo
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
The massive influx of Indochinese refugees and immigrants to North America since the end of the Indochina war, especially to the United States of America, has resulted in numerous multi-disciplinary efforts to document and study their mental well-being. As a group, Indochinese Americans arrived from war-torn countries where many had experienced various forms of trauma, poverty, and oppression. Their pre-migration experiences, and experiences in adjusting and adapting to the new life in the host society have influenced their mental health status and overall quality of life in various ways. This paper analyzes and synthesizes a wealth of multi-disciplinary research on …

Quetzalcoatl Challenges The Christian Bible, Elsa Tamez
Quetzalcoatl Challenges The Christian Bible, Elsa Tamez
Journal of Hispanic / Latino Theology
The author traces four different attitudes toward the Bible that have developed in the more than five hundred years since the encounter of 1492. She challenges readers to rethink both their biblical interpretation and the Christian practice that draws upon that interpretation by becoming attentive to indigenous voices and traditions. If the present moment can be recognized as a kairos — a privileged time of decision, judgment, and grace — Tamez argues that “the historical challenge comes at this moment,” some five hundred years later, “from the indigenous and African-American peoples who, together with women, are rising up as newly …

Perceptions Of African-American Males Regarding Factors Supporting Doctoral Completion In Colleges Of Education, William Respress
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The primary purpose of the study was to examine what institutional factors most influenced the decision of African-American male doctoral scholars to persist unto graduation. The literature review showed mentoring, institutional climate, race relations, and social adjustment as key factors in persistence of minorities in graduate studies. An objective specific to the study was to explore the cumulative outcomes that mentoring, social adjustment, institutional climate, and race relations have upon persistence. The population included scholars at both Predominantly White Colleges (PWIs) and Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) throughout the United States in Colleges of Education. One hundred sixty-four scholars …

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Thirty Vietnamese families from the King County area in the state of Washington participated in this study. Thirty adolescents between 13 and 19 years of age and 53 parents (27fathers and 26 mothers) responded to self-reported questionnaires. Data analysis was conducted to provide a descriptive "picture" of family and individual characteristics associated with Vietnamese adolescents' psychological well-being. Gender differences were apparent with Vietnamese female adolescents reporting higher mean scores on depressive symptoms and lower mean scores on …

Asian American Experiences: A View From The Other Side, Pill Jay Cho
Asian American Experiences: A View From The Other Side, Pill Jay Cho
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
President Truman is said to have complained about his assistants for giving him advice "on the other hand" as well as the first one. He joked about his wish to find an advisor who has only one arm. As one of the two guest editors for the present special issue on Asian American Experience, I have been surprised by the fact that all manuscripts submitted discuss what I call "negative" side of the Asian American experiences.
