A Pale Reflection: American Indian Images In Mormon Arts, P. Jane Hafen
A Pale Reflection: American Indian Images In Mormon Arts, P. Jane Hafen
Theses and Dissertations
American Indians in Mormon arts suffer from the imposition of the white man's traditional ideas, images and stereotypes. An examination of Mormon literature since 1941, Mormon hymns and music, and Mormon visual arts reveals little consideration of Native American values: tribal affiliation, significance of place and community, myth and ritual. While the mainstream of American art has incorporated Native American values into Indian representations, and even found a place for Native American artists, Mormon arts adhere to historical misinterpretations, despite a number of fine Mormon Native American artists.

Indiana University Vs. Indian People: Defending Our Roots In The Land, Jan Hammil
Graves Protection and Repatriation
This 4-page typed press release titled "Defending our Roots in the Land" was issued by American Indians Against Desecration circa November 1983. It describes the history of the founding of AID as a result of the Longest Walk, when Indians discovered the remains of their ancestors housed in universities, laboratories and museums across the United States. It also details the conflict between the Glenn Black Laboratory of Archeology at Indiana University and members of AID who were denied access to human remains stored there. A prayer vigil and four days of fasting are planned in protest.

The Introduction Of European And Asian Cultural Materials On The Alaskan And Northwest Coasts Before 1800, Herbert Kyle Beals
The Introduction Of European And Asian Cultural Materials On The Alaskan And Northwest Coasts Before 1800, Herbert Kyle Beals
Dissertations and Theses
This thesis concerns the introduction of exogenous cultural materials among the native inhabitants of the Alaskan and Northwest coasts prior to the and of the 18th century. It is an investigation of the sources of these materials and the manner and chronology of their introduction. The research is based primarily on data drawn from accounts of native life by explorers and fur traders who visited the coasts of northwestern North America in the 18th century. These accounts are supplemented by ethnologic and archaeologic data collected by anthropologists in the 19th and 20th centuries.

Zora Neale Hurston, Daryl Cumber Dance
Zora Neale Hurston, Daryl Cumber Dance
English Faculty Publications
Some new information is occasionally being ferreted out that may help to cast additional light on some of these issues, but quite clearly Zora Neale Hurston will remain something of an enigma - too complex a figure to reach any easy conclusions about, except perhaps that she defies simple characterization. People responded to her (and still do) very emotionally: her detractors despise her bitterly; her defenders love her passionately. All agree that she was eccentric, colorful, entertaining, humorous, and unforgettable.
Perhaps the most crucial question to pose about her is why one of the most important figures in the Harlem …
Tillamook Indian Basketry : Continuity And Change As Seen In The Adams Collection, Ailsa Elizabeth Crawford
Tillamook Indian Basketry : Continuity And Change As Seen In The Adams Collection, Ailsa Elizabeth Crawford
Dissertations and Theses
In the Adams Collection at the Tillamook County Pioneer Museum, Tillamook, Oregon, there are 29 baskets that were probably made between 1880 and 1940. They are mostly of raffia, are somewhat faded from their original, bright, commercial colors, and are generally quite small. Despite the fact that these baskets are well-documented and were made by Tillamook women, they are the sort that have been overlooked by anthropologists and by collectors because of their non-"traditional" appearance. In order to determine what relationship these baskets have to Tillamook basketry made earlier, I analyzed them and 39 Tillamook baskets from four other museum …
