Western Women’S Travel Writing About The Pacific Islands, Claudia Knapman
Western Women’S Travel Writing About The Pacific Islands, Claudia Knapman
Pacific Studies
Although there has been a revival of interest in nineteenth-century women’s travel writing, this is a neglected area of Pacific scholarship. Though the work of Western women travelers who wrote about the Pacific Islands has been drawn upon by some researchers, this literature has not received attention as a genre, as a body of source material, or as the focus of academic research questions. This article, while neither a detailed analysis of particular writers and their works nor an attempt to delineate the field, uses three categorizations--the realist, the protofeminist, and the orientalist--derived from analyses of women’s travel writing elsewhere …

In Usable Pasts, fourteen authors examine the manipulation of traditional expressions among a variety of groups from the United States and Canada: the development of a pictorial style by Navajo weavers in response to traders, Mexican American responses to the appropriation of traditional foods by Anglos, the expressive forms of communication that engender and sustain a sense of community in an African American women's social club and among elderly Yiddish folksingers in Miami Beach, the incorporation of mass media images into the "C&Ts" (customs and traditions) of a Boy Scout troop, the changing meaning of their defining Exodus-like migration to …

A Guide For Educators In Teaching Four Central American Indigenous Tales, Judith C. Ginther
A Guide For Educators In Teaching Four Central American Indigenous Tales, Judith C. Ginther
All Graduate Projects
An informal study was conducted to develop a guide for grades 4-6 educators to use in teaching Central American folklore in the context of an interdisciplinary curriculum. Four story books were selected which reflect the cultures of Costa Rica, Honduras, Guatemala and Panama and serve to illustrate the oral tradition of peoples from these countries. The instructional method used was the Cognitive Academic Language Learning Approach (CALLA) by Chamot and O'Malley. Based on the language acquisition and bilingualism research and theoretical work of Jim Cummins, CALLA follows a comprehensive lesson plan model that integrates language development, academic content mastery, and …

The Archaeology Of Thompson Island, Barbara E. Luedtke
Anthropology Faculty Publication Series
This report summarizes the results of a 1993 survey by UMass Boston, and of previous archaeological fieldwork on Thompson Island, Boston, MA, including background research, documentary research, walkover reconnaissance, and subsurface testing with shovel test pits and 1 meter square excavation units. Despite the fact that many parts of the island have not yet been surveyed, twenty prehistoric sites are now known, an unusually high density for the Boston Harbor Islands. Components range in age from Late Archaic through Late Woodland, with Middle Woodland especially well represented. Several large habitation sites with shell middens are known, in addition to numerous …
