The Role Of Serum Total Cholesterol In Coronary Heart Disease: A Prospective Cohort Analysis From The Framingham Heart Study, Sanish Maharjan
The Role Of Serum Total Cholesterol In Coronary Heart Disease: A Prospective Cohort Analysis From The Framingham Heart Study, Sanish Maharjan
Capstone Experience: Master of Public Health
Objective: To investigate the association between serum total cholesterol and coronary heart disease (CHD), accounting for key risk factors in adults aged 32–70 years.
Methods: We analyzed data from 4,382 participants of the Framingham Heart Study, a prospective cohort study with 24 years of follow-up. Multivariable logistic regression was used to assess the relationship between serum cholesterol and CHD, adjusting for age, sex, smoking status, systolic blood pressure, BMI, diabetes, and heart rate.
Results: Individuals with high (aOR = 1.87; 95% CI = 1.52 - 2.32; p<.0001) and borderline high (aOR = 1.40; 95% CI = 1.13 - 1.75; p = 0.0024) cholesterol levels have significantly higher odds of developing CHD than those with normal cholesterol. Older (aOR=1.03; 95% CI=1.03–1.05), male (aOR=2.16; 95% CI=1.86–2.51), current smokers (aOR=1.20; 95% CI=1.03–1.39), hypertensive (aOR=1.88; 95% CI=1.55–2.26), obese (aOR=3.03; 95% CI=1.24–7.43), and diabetic individuals (aOR=2.41; 95% CI=1.63–3.56), had significantly higher CHD risk.
Conclusions: Elevated serum cholesterol significantly increases CHD risk, emphasizing …
The Informal, Non-Prescribed Use Of Antiretroviral Medications For Prep Among A National Us-Based Sample Of Gay, Bisexual, And Other Men Who Have Sex With Men: A Cross-Sectional Study, Mance E. Buttram, Matthew S. Ellis, Krishen D. Samuel, Matthew Hayhurst

Health, Human Performance and Recreation Faculty Publications and Presentations
This brief report presents findings on informal, non-prescribed PrEP use among an online sample of gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men (n = 196). Mean age was 33.4. Participants were Hispanic (13.3%), African American (15.8%), white (63.8%), and other race/ethnicity (6.6%). Informal PrEP users (11%) more frequently reported past year sexually transmitted infections (p < 0.001), group sex (p < 0.001), sex in public (p < 0.01), transactional sex (p < 0.001), ever receiving a formal PrEP prescription (p < 0.05), and ease of finding diverted HIV medications on gay dating/sex apps (p < 0.05). Formal PrEP uptake should be encouraged to mitigate potential negative consequences of informal use.
Protective And Risk Exposures Of Cancers Disproportionately Affecting Hispanics In A U.S. - Mexico Border Population: A Clinical Informatics Approach, Amir Hernandez
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
BACKGROUND: Cancer is the second leading cause of death in the U.S. with over 8 million new cases between 2016 and 2020. A variety of protective and risk exposures are associated with multiple cancers and disparities and inequalities exist in the health outcomes of minority populations. Hispanic populations in the U.S. and Texas have some of the highest rates of cancer incidence and mortality when compared to other populations. The use of Population and Public Health Informatics approaches to address these issues have shown promise when employed in healthcare institutions METHODS: A case-control study design examined associations between multiple cancers …
Examining The Relationship Between Adverse Childhood Experiences, Coping Behaviors, And Metabolic Syndrome In Mexican-American Men, Paulina Torres
Examining The Relationship Between Adverse Childhood Experiences, Coping Behaviors, And Metabolic Syndrome In Mexican-American Men, Paulina Torres
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Background: The prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MetS) has been increasing in the US over recent years. Individuals who have experienced adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and developed maladaptive coping strategies are at increased risk of developing MetS. Hispanic men might have an increased risk of developing MetS due to higher exposure to ACEs and increased use of maladaptive coping strategies.Purpose: To examine the relationship between ACEs, coping, and MetS among Mexican-American men. Methods: A secondary analysis of cross-sectional study of 100 adult men from El Paso, Texas in 2018-19. ACEs were examined using the 10-item ACE questionnaire. Coping was assessed through …

The Journal of the Michigan Dental Association
The debate surrounding fluoride use for caries control has intensified due to recent events, including a National Toxicology Program (NTP) report and a court ruling mandating EPA action on fluoride levels in tap water.
Despite concerns about fluoride's potential neurodevelopmental impact at high concentrations, current evidence shows no adverse effects at the recommended levels of 0.7 ppm in U.S. community water fluoridation programs. While studies in regions with endemic fluorosis suggest an association between high fluoride exposure and lower IQ, methodological limitations undermine causal conclusions.
Global and U.S. health authorities, including the WHO and ADA, reaffirm the safety and efficacy …
Assessing Sedimentation Impact Through Dem, Point Cloud, And Discharge Analysis, Shandell Thomas
Assessing Sedimentation Impact Through Dem, Point Cloud, And Discharge Analysis, Shandell Thomas
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
This study focused on five arroyos flowing into the Rio Grande, in the stretch between Caballo Dam and Las Cruces, New Mexico. Drone imagery was acquired from study areas in each arroyo. Photogrammetry was used to create high-resolution digital elevation models (DEMs), point clouds, drone imagery and potential discharges were acquired for each arroyo. Investigation of seven different methods resulted in the selection of the Terrain Ruggedness Map (TRM) as a predictor of surface roughness, along with high-resolution DEMâ??s to illustrate small and low-relief channel features. The five arroyos with varying sediment sizes and characteristics were studied to understand how …

Locating Health Inequities: Understanding The Dynamic Role Of ‘Place’ In The Social Determinants Of Health And Healthcare Accessibility, Abbie Sudduth Page
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Objective. The social determinants of health (SDH) are various non-medical factors that influence health behaviors and health outcomes, and they are measured in variety of different ways. The purpose of this dissertation is to explore the relationship SDH items that may group to form a new domain and may be associated with outcomes of health care accessibility. This dissertation seeks to explain a novel understanding of social determinants of health and healthcare accessibility through the lens of the socioecological model and place-based SDH items.
Methodology. This retrospective study design utilized data from the baseline survey and year-22 wave of the …

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
Background: Digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT) has outpaced digital mammography in clinical adoption in the United States; however, substantial technological limitations remain to image quality in DBT, including undersampling from a one-dimensional (1D) scan geometry, x-ray source motion during acquisition, and patient motion artifacts from long exam times.
Purpose: A thermionic cathode x-ray system employing two-dimensional (2D, planar) multiple x-ray-source arrays (MXA) is proposed to improve DBT image quality.
Methods: A 1D MXA, consisting of a linear array of thermionic cathodes was used to simulate a 2D MXA. The 1D MXA included 11 focal spots separated by a distance of Δd …
