This pilot study was developed to teach people with mental retardation about their own sexuality, appropriate community behaviors, and to develop within them a basic sense of responsibility for their own actions. Problems in social/sexual behaviors have been consistently quoted as reasons for high recidivism rates, as well as difficulties in community living, vocational placement, and other generalized stereotypes about mental retardation. Often the public remains uninformed about, does not recognize, and/or feels that sexual rights for people with any mental differences should not exist. In October, 1969, the Highway Salvage Section of the Arizona State Museum conducted emergency salvage excavations in conjunction with the construction of the Tucson-Nogales Highway. Ten cremations were recovered from a backhoe trench which had been placed within the city limits of Nogales, Arizona. Analysis of the cremations indicated cultural contact between the Trincheras culture of Sonora, Mexico, and the Hohokam culture of the Santa Cruz River Valley in southern Arizona.

Colonoscopy Is a procedure used worldwide in the adult population. Here we report the case of a colonoscopic polypectomy in a preschool-age child, and we show once more that the procedure Is a safe one to perform In children if the appropriate precautions are taken.

Aqueous microbiological and cytological studies were performed on 134 anterior chamber taps done on 118 patients both with and without uveitis. Cell wall defective bacterial forms (CWDF) were recovered from about 40% of these aqueous specimens and classical bacteria were recovered from 12%. A statistically significant difference could not be found between the incidence of bacterial cell wall defective forms in the various anatomical types of uveitis. There were hints from this work that the presence of CWDF In the aqueous was more frequent in younger patients with uveitis, early in the uveitis attack, if there were multiple foci of …

Ten patients who developed anastomotic edema following large or small intestinal anastomosis had a rapid recovery after treatment with dexamethasone. The clinical and radiologic picture of adynamic ileus disappeared rapidly. There were no Immediate or long-term (more than two years) complications or side effects associated with the use of dexamethasone. This preliminary report indicates that dexamethasone may be a beneficial agent In the control of anastomotic edema.

This first case of Legionnaires' disease seen at Henry Ford Hospital is described. A previously healthy 72-year-old man developed progressive pneumonia in September, 1977; it was unresponsive to treatment with cephalothin. However, he rapidly recovered when the treatment was changed to oral erythromycin. Diagnosis was established by serologic studies done at the Center for Disease Control. This pneumonia occurred in a sporadic form with no evidence of secondary cases.

Long-Term Survival After Onset Of Blast Crisis In Chronic Granulocytic Leukemia: Case Report And Therapeutic Considerations, Ellis J. Van Slyck, Ahmad Samhouri

Current analysis indicates a median survival of 3.6 months in 356 cases of chronic granulocytic leukemia after onset of blast transformation. Thirty-five (10.0%) complete remissions (CR), all of short duration, were observed. Closer scrutiny of the reported clinical experience offers clues for improving this poor outlook. A 76% CR rate can be extracted from this total experience by identifying cases treated with cytoslne arabinoside combined with one or more other agents. In isolated reports, weekly vincristine and prednisone have yielded good remission rates. Two general morphologic types of blasts can be distinguished by cytochemical stains and other features: lymphoid and …

Liver cell adenoma and focal nodular hyperplasia have been recognized as rare benign tumors. Their relationship with the use of oral contraceptives has been suggested since 1973. At Henry Ford Hospital, we have had four patients, ages 19, 23, 25,and 30, on oral contraceptives who presented with different clinical pictures suggesting acute abdomen. A hepatic tumor was suspected preoperatively in one patient, was found at laparotomy for biliary tract disease in two other cases, while the fourth patient presented with acute intra-abdominal hemorrhage. In recent years, many dramatic changes have occurred in the nation's health care delivery system, particularly in health education. The National Consumer Health Information and Promotion Act was enacted in 1976. In response to this legislation, the nation's health education efforts were greatly expanded through the creation of a Bureau of Health Education within the Center for Disease Control and establishment of the Office of Health Information and Promotion in the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Health, Department of Health, Education and Welfare. A National Center for Health Education was also established. Health education was prominently included among the …

Rear-end collisions represent 25% of all vehicular accidents. On occasion, the patients become more disabled by the diagnosis of "whiplash" than by the injury. During the past three years, 100 patients were referred for neurological examination and disposition following rear-end collisions. Appropriate neurological testing, included the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory Test (MMPI). A minority of these patients required hospitalization. The incidence of disc rupture requiring surgical decompression was less than 1%. The psychological tests were of limited aid in helping the physician to treat this group of patients. A man developed sudden symptoms of increased intracranial pressure following a prolonged course of cryptoccal meningitis which appeared to be responding to treatment. A choroid plexus granuloma was found in the dilated and blocked lateral ventricle. The poor prognosis of this type of complication of the cryptococcal meningitis is discussed.

The water-soluble contrast medium lumbar myelogram is a very helpful tool in the diagnosis of herniated nucleus pulposus (EfNP) in patients who suffer unilateral root pain of mechanical course. One can often make the differential diagnosis between a ruptured disc and a protruding disc. Unless the disc fragment lies way out in the intervertebral foramen, the myelogram will show some kind of anomaly. Therefore, fewer exploratory operations will be performed on patients having normal myelograms. Metrisamide, a newcomer among the water-soluble contrast media, is nontoxic for the spinal cord. Therefore, if the usual myelogram is normal and one fears a …

The author postulates a rare syndrome which should be considered when craniocerebral trauma is followed by a lucid interval and then rapid deterioration of midbrain function. The diagnosis was made on the basis of an irregular mass in the floor of the third ventricle and bloody ventricular fluid. Today's availability of CAT scanning would provide a quicker and more certain diagnosis than was possible for the two cases reported, the author states.

After approximately three years' experience, the use of multiple modality treatment appears to be the most advantageous for individuals who have not responded satisfactorily to routine medical and surgical treatment. Alleviation of pain, discontinuance of narcotic medication, and return to both social and vocational activities has been accomplished in most patients of this center for the treatment of chronic pain.

Three cases are reported in which the author used Knighton's simplified technique to make lesions in the ventrolateral nucleus of the thalamus. This controlled the involuntary movements of hemiballismus. One patient died of a myocardial infarction due to marked hypotension and an episode of postoperative bleeding in the upper gastrointestinal tract.

Increasing experience with selective cerebral arteriography in the diagnostic evaluation of acoustic tumors has led to a more rational determination of the proper surgical approach to the lesion. It also predicts the necessity for staging the surgical procedure, reduces the potential for intraoperative complications and rules out other types of angle lesions and the possible necessity for performing a preoperative, concomitant or postoperative shunting procedure. Subarachnoid And Intracerebral Hemorrhage Due To The Rupture Of An Arteriovenous Malformation And Aneurysm In The Same Patient. Report Of Two Cases, F. Gomez-Mendez

Two cases are reported of coexistent intracranial aneurysm and arteriovenous malformation. Both lesions ruptured within one week in one patient and within three months in the other. The rarity of such occurrences is discussed and the surgical operative procedures used are described. One patient is doing well except for some weakness of the right leg and mild dysphasia. The second patient died three months postoperatively, probably because of rupture of the aneurysm. No autopsy was obtained.

As part of the scientific program honoring Robert 5. Knighton, M.D., a clinical pathological conference was conducted by Dr. Jose Bebin. Following presentation of the protocol, comments from several discussants included diagnoses of a primary neoplastic process in the brain stem, angioma of the pons, neoplasm or cyst of the posterior fossa, possible angioma on the left side of the brain stem, a viral cerebellitis, an ependymoma, or a medulloblastoma. Together with the case presentation the author offers autopsy findings and a discussion and review of the literature.
