Obesity has become an epidemic amongst American youth in the 21st century, and is spreading not only into other developed nations such as the UK and Australia, but is also beginning to effect developing nations such as India (Bhardwaj, 2008). It is estimated that nationwide, childhood obesity affects around 17% of American children (Center For Disease Control, 2011). Obesity has been linked to many health disorders, including but not limited to, heart disease and diabetes. Subsequently, this rise in childhood obesity is having a severe impact on the healthcare services sector in America, with some studies suggesting childhood obesity in …

Curated Exhibit Roadside Crosses And Memorials: Photo Essay By Gerald Moore, Laura J. Hall
Posters and Presentations
The Roadside Crosses and Memorials exhibit, curated by Laura J. Hall, MFA, featured a poignant photo essay by New Mexico artist Gerald Moore. The exhibit captured the memorials placed alongside highways and roads in remembrance of those who lost their lives in vehicular accidents. These "descansos," as they are called in New Mexico, represent the places where individuals were last alive, offering a powerful reflection on life, loss, and remembrance. Through photography, Moore documented the varied forms of these memorials, from simple wooden crosses to intricate handmade tributes, capturing both their artistic expression and their deep emotional resonance. April 28, …

Introduction: Access to family planning services is a major public health issue. State policies and funding for family planning services may increase access to contraceptive services and help women avoid unintended pregnancies. Study Design: We identified sexually active, fertile women participants of the National Survey of Family Growth (2006-2008). Women were categorized as consistent or inconsistent users of contraceptives based on self-report. States were classified based on 2006 Medicaid family planning waiver status (income expansions, limited expansions, or no Medicaid family planning expansions), 2006 public funding for family planning in dollars per woman, and insurance coverage of contraceptive mandate status …

Radiation Therapy Treatment Plan Optimization Accounting For Random And Systematic Patient Setup Uncertainties, Joseph Moore
Radiation Therapy Treatment Plan Optimization Accounting For Random And Systematic Patient Setup Uncertainties, Joseph Moore
Theses and Dissertations
External-beam radiotherapy is one of the primary methods for treating cancer. Typically a radiotherapy treatment course consists of radiation delivered to the patient in multiple daily treatment fractions over 6-8 weeks. Each fraction requires the patient to be aligned with the image acquired before the treatment course used in treatment planning. Unfortunately, patient alignment is not perfect and results in residual errors in patient setup. The standard technique for dealing with errors in patient setup is to expand the volume of the target by some margin to ensure the target receives the planned dose in the presence of setup errors. …

Characterization Of A Blast Wave Device And Blast Wave Induced Traumatic Brain Injury In A Rat Model By Magnetic Resonance Imaging And Spectroscopy, Frank Corwin
Theses and Dissertations
Blast wave induced traumatic brain injury (bTBI) is a modality of injury that has come into prominence at the current time due to the large number of military and civilian personnel who have experienced the localized shock wave produced by explosive devices. The shock wave will travel concentrically outward from the explosive center, being absorbed and transmitted thru soft objects, such as tissue, and reflecting off stationary obstructions. Transmission and absorption in tissues can result in a number of physiological measureable injuries, the most common of which being what is frequently called “blast lung”. Blast lung involves the spalling effect …

Medicare's Accountable Care Organization Regulations: How Will Medicare Beneficiaries Who Reside In Medically Underserved Communities Fare?, Sara J. Rosenbaum, Peter Shin
Geiger Gibson/RCHN Community Health Foundation Research Collaborative
On March 31, 2011, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) released proposed regulations implementing the Medicare Shared Savings Program (MSSP). The thrust of the MSSP is to promote savings to Medicare as well as the greater clinical integration of health care through incentive payments to accountable care organizations (ACOs) that meet Medicare standards for structure, performance, and health care outcomes. The effort to spur greater clinical integration through the MSSP was part of a broader set of reforms contained in the Affordable Care Act (ACA) whose aim was to improve health care quality and efficiency. Among these reforms …

Fatality Case Reports--Motor Vehicle
A 56 year-old male long-haul semi-truck driver fell asleep while driving. It was approximately 4:15 AM and the driver was hauling a load of canned tomatoes. He was approximately 225 miles away from his destination driving in the right hand lane, on a four lane interstate traveling south, when he fell asleep. Upon falling asleep, the unit travelled to the right, across the rumble strip and the emergency lane, behind a guardrail, down an embankment and crashed into a grove of trees. A man driving a car behind the semi truck saw dust rise from the crash, stopped, called emergency …
Exploring Student Perceptions To Explain The Relationship Between Physical Activity And Academic Achievement In Adolescents: A Mixed Methods Study, Megan J. Hylok
College of Education and Human Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
A nationwide survey conducted by the Center for Disease Control in 2007 reported 65% of high school students did not meet the recommendation that youth participate in at least 60 minutes of physical activity most days of the week (CDC, 2008). While research has focused its attention primarily on bodily health, growing evidence supports the benefits of physical activity on brain health (Ratey & Hagerman, 2008). Physical activity is important and many adolescents are not meeting the recommendation, therefore, it is important to explore the adolescent perceptions to understand which factors influence physical activity participation. The significance of this study …

Aids/Hiv Denialism: Patients’ Privacy Rights, Fadia Abdullah, Guadalupe Medrano
Festival of Communities: UG Symposium (Posters)
HIV is a sexually transmitted disease that develops into AIDS. There is no cure for it, only treatment. In this poster, we look at the pros and cons of disclosing this type of information. People who decide to disclose their HIV status may have various reasons for doing so, but most do it for emotional support and for prevention of spreading the disease. Those who decide to keep it private primarily do it to not face rejection, discrimination, degradation, and loss of respect. (Petronio Page 72) The problem with creating a public database is that many organizations are against the …

Aids Denialism, Erika Jenel Delos Santos, Roy Llana, Jocelyn Tan
Festival of Communities: UG Symposium (Posters)
AIDS denialism is a growing issue in many parts the world. Through scholarly journal articles, book resources and other research tactics, further understanding how HIV/AIDS denialism is unethical can be distinguished. Discovering that AIDS is most prominent in South Africa explains why denialism is as critical as it is. However, the unethical aspect of AIDS denialism is in effect particularly amongst families. When a South African inhabitant realizes they have AIDS, they feel outcasted by their families due to shame. They fear as though they will be disowned because they have flaws that are unacceptable. These family values are significant …

Vaccines Controversy, Jackelin Ruiz, Keith Wellman
Festival of Communities: UG Symposium (Posters)
Our research was conducted on a Vaccine controversy which raised the question on ethics, morality, safety and effectiveness of vaccination on children. The case study we focused on was about a study done by Dr. Andrew Wakefield and twelve other Colleagues, which was published in a well know journal The Lancet. The study has recently been retracted because an investigation found that he failed to mention that his research of the MMR vaccine was funded through solicitors seeking evidence to use against vaccine manufactures (Deer, Brian). To conclude our research we compared the current vaccination rates with the rates …

Impact Of Interventions To Prevent And Manage Preeclampsia And Eclampsia On Stillbirths, Mehnaz Jabeen, Mohammad Yawar Yakoob, Aamer Imdad, Zulfiqar Ahmed Bhutta
Woman and Child Health
Background:Pre-eclampsia and Eclampsia are relatively common complications of pregnancy, leading to considerable maternal and fetal mortality and morbidity. We sought to review the effect of aspirin, calcium supplementation, antihypertensive agents and magnesium sulphate on risk stillbirths.
Methods:
A systematic literature search was conducted to identify studies evaluating the above interventions. We used a standardized abstraction and grading format and performed meta-analyses where data were available from more than one studies. The estimated effect on stillbirths was determined by applying the standard Child Health Epidemiology Reference Group (CHERG) rules for multiple outcomes. For interventions with insufficient evidence for overall effect, …
