BACKGROUND: Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder with early onset in utero or childhood. Environmental exposure to six metals (Pb, Hg, As, Cd, Mn, Al) is believed to be associated with ASD directly or interactively with genes.
METHODS: We enrolled 30 ASD cases, age 2-12 years old, and 30 age- and sex-matched typically developing (TD) controls in Karachi, Pakistan. We assessed associations of ASD status with various factors using Conditional Logistic Regression models. We also used General Linear Models to assess possible interaction of blood Mn and Pb concentrations with the three GST genes in relation to ASD …

Exploring Contextual Differences In Environment And Policy Strategies To Promote Physical Activity In Disadvantaged Communities, Natalicio Hector Serrano
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
The benefits of physical activity for health are far reaching, including the reduced risk of several chronic diseases. However, only about 24% of US adults meet recommended guidelines of physical activity, with traditionally disadvantaged populations such as rural residents and persons of color facing even lower rates. Ecological models of health behavior help to understand correlates of physical activity that impact population health, but may not be as useful in disadvantaged populations where the evidence base is either lacking or not as rigorous. Furthermore, measures and methods may be underdeveloped in disadvantaged populations and there is a lack of understanding …

Perinatal Periods Of Risk: Examination Of Data Quality & Inclusion Criteria, New Unbiased Reference Groups, And A Nationwide County-Level Analysis, Carol S. Gilbert
Theses & Dissertations
Records of births, infant deaths, and fetal deaths are compiled by the US Vital Records System and used to monitor population health and guide health policy. The Perinatal Periods of Risk Approach (PPOR) relies on vital records data to address fetal and infant mortality in US cities. It uses reference groups to estimate preventable mortality by risk period. To avoid biased analyses due to poor data quality for small and early infant and fetal deaths, an expert committee recommended that PPOR analyses exclude fetal deaths delivered at gestational age (GA) <24 >weeks, and infant deaths and live births with birthweights (BW) …24>

Since the beginning of the HIV/AIDS epidemic, gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (gbMSM) have been disproportionately impacted by HIV/AIDS health disparities. Research showed that resilience to HIV/AIDS is associated with increased use of relevant health services, lower sexual health risks, and improved mental health outcomes among racially and ethnically diverse gbMSM. As the subpopulation that has historically been impacted by HIV/AIDS the longest, older gbMSM living with HIV/AIDS have inarguably exhibited resilience to HIV/AIDS the most. The qualitative study described in this paper sought to identify and examine protective factors that fostered resilience to HIV/AIDS …

Due to the emergence of ZIKV and the historical presence of other mosquito-borne illnesses, Hidalgo County obtained funding to enhance mosquito surveillance and educate residents on arboviruses and travel risks. During this time period, Hidalgo County mosquito surveillance efforts increased by 1.275%. This increase resulted in >8000 mosquitoes collected, and 28 mosquito species identified. Aedes aegypti, Ae albopictus and Culex quinquefasciatus made up approximately two-thirds of the mosquitoes collected in 2018 (4122/6171). Spatiotemporal …
Guiding Change: A Multidisciplinary Framework For Interventions Addressing Systemic Racism In Healthcare, Lavette D. King
Guiding Change: A Multidisciplinary Framework For Interventions Addressing Systemic Racism In Healthcare, Lavette D. King
Master's Projects and Capstones
The relationship between systemic and institutional racism in the U.S., and health outcomes in people of the African Diaspora have been well documented (Bailey et al., 2017). Distrust in the healthcare system is the result of generational trauma compounded by an ongoing issue that has yet to be fully addressed (Scharff et al., 2015). For decades people of African descent have expressed concern about negative experiences with the U.S. healthcare system. Often the encounters leave them feeling, mistreated, unheard and or criminalized. These feelings result in trepidation over using the healthcare system which often further compounds health issues (Washington, 2008). …

Efficacy Of Curcumin In Asthma: A Systematic Review And Meta Analysis, Tabitha Grow, Adam Sadowski
McNair Symposium
Over 23 million people are affected by asthma in the United States and 262 million individuals globally. Asthma, if poorly controlled, is associated with significant morbidity as well as increased risk for mortality. Asthma involves several complex inflammatory pathways and processes including an increase in immune cell activation. Curcumin, the active constituent found in turmeric, has been studied in numerous in-vivo and in-vitro studies to generate anti-inflammatory effects in pulmonary diseases and, more recently, an increase in clinical data has become available. Since the most recent review assessing the role of curcumin in pulmonary disorders, additional clinical trials have been …

Roles Of A Bradykinin Storm And A Cytokine Storm In Covid-19 Cases, Nouha H. Odeh
Honors College Theses
In the light of recent events, it is imperative to understand the key inflammatory response elements that appear to be the source of more severe ailments resulting from a SARS-CoV-2 viral infection known as Covid-19 The more severe cases of Covid-19 are characterized by a severe inflammatory response resulting in tissue damage. My research proposal aims to investigate the two possible culprits of this response: a bradykinin (BK) storm and an interleukin-6 (IL-6) mediated cytokine storm. In both systems respectively, the excess release of these signals subsequently signals the production of even more of the same response element, resulting in …

Polyploid Giant Cancer Cells And Ovarian Cancer: New Insights Into Mitotic Regulators And Polyploidy†, Joanne S Richards, Nicholes R Candelaria, Rainer B Lanz
Faculty, Staff and Students Publications
Current first-line treatment of patients with high-grade serous ovarian cancer (HGSOC) involves the use of cytotoxic drugs that frequently lead to recurrent tumors exhibiting increased resistance to the drugs and poor patient survival. Strong evidence is accumulating to show that HGSOC tumors and cell lines contain a subset of cells called polyploidy giant cancer cells (PGCCs) that act as stem-like, self-renewing cells. These PGCCs appear to play a key role in tumor progression by generating drug-resistant progeny produced, in part, as a consequence of utilizing a modified form of mitosis known as endoreplication. Thus, developing drugs to target PGCCs and …

Women face risks to their wellbeing during the perinatal period of pregnancy. However, there is a dearth of information on perinatal risk factors within the biopsychosocial paradigm. Emphasis is often placed on biological components associated with pregnancy and women’s health. However, psychological and social determinants of health are integral during the perinatal period, and mental wellness is often a determinant for positive maternal and neonatal health outcomes. This article reviews risk factors of perinatal wellness (e.g., physical and nutritional concerns, trauma, discrimination, adverse childhood events) and highlights protective factors for women in their perinatal period. Healthcare professionals can support perinatal …

Lambda-Cyhalothrin Used As An Insecticide In Agriculture: Study Of Biomarker Toxicokinetics To Monitor Worker Exposure, Michèle Bouchard, Jonathan Côté, Rania Khemiri

Association Between Health Literacy Levels And Behavioral Health Hospitalizations And Emergency Department Utilization In The United States, Rebecca Lynn Hoen
Association Between Health Literacy Levels And Behavioral Health Hospitalizations And Emergency Department Utilization In The United States, Rebecca Lynn Hoen
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Behavioral health disorders are common in the United States (US) and are associated with potentially preventable high-cost health care utilization, such as inpatient hospitalization and emergency department utilization. Health literacy (HL) may be an important modifiable contributing factor to this preventable utilization, as limited health literacy is common in the US and has been linked to increased risk of hospitalization and emergency department utilization. However, few published studies have examined the association between health literacy and behavioral health disorders, and no studies have examined either the association between health literacy and utilization or the potential effects HL interventions might have …

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Few studies have examined the financial motives and risks involved in modern video games, as well as the psychosocial factors contributing to this type of gaming involvement. Previous research on gambling has shown financial motives alone to be a major risk factor for the development of gambling disorder, with higher levels of personal relative deprivation (PRD) identified as a main contributor to this relationship. Therefore, the present study investigated whether this association applied to US adult video gamers, and if it would predict their problematic gaming behaviors. We hypothesized PRD and gaming disorder severity would have a positive association, with …

Trends In Hysterectomy In Hospital And Ambulatory Settings In Kentucky 2017-2020., Felicia A. Pugh
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Hysterectomy is the most common treatment for benign uterine conditions in the United States. Data suggest that one in nine women will have the procedure in their lifetime (1). Previous studies indicate that abdominal hysterectomy rates for non-malignancies are declining as alternative methods are increasing for decades; however, those trends do not apply for all women in the country (2-5). In this cross-sectional study, hysterectomy procedures completed between 2017-2020 are described in Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services data. Multivariable logistic regression is used to assess the odds of abdominal hysterectomy for benign indications in Kentucky. Conclusion: Rates of …
