Paget Bone Disease And Heredity: A Case Report, Donato Agnusdei, Roberto Civitelli, Angelo Camporeale, Carlo Gennari Sep 1988

Paget Bone Disease And Heredity: A Case Report, Donato Agnusdei, Roberto Civitelli, Angelo Camporeale, Carlo Gennari

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

Evidence on familial aggregation of Paget disease of bone shows that the trait is controlled by a single dominant gene. Due to the late onset of the disease, the primary biochemical abnormalities leading to the characteristic roentgenographic features are still unknown. We report the case of a 24-year-old woman who had an elevated serum alkaline phosphatase on routine analysis. Family history revealed that her father and paternal grandmother had Paget bone disease. This pattern is compatible with an autosomic dominant inheritance. Complete laboratory workup confirmed high heat labile alkaline phosphatase values, along with high serum osteocalcin and urinary hydroxyproline excretion. …

Adolescent Smoking Status And Socioeconomic Dependence On The Tobacco Crop In Southeastern Kentucky, Gregory Colwell Aug 1988

Adolescent Smoking Status And Socioeconomic Dependence On The Tobacco Crop In Southeastern Kentucky, Gregory Colwell

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The purpose of the study was to quantify the relationship between adolescent smoking and economic dependence on the tobacco crop. A survey of 1322 students from a random sample of all secondary schools in four counties in southeastern Kentucky was performed. The survey gathered information concerning smoking behavior and social variables. Chi-square analysis was performed to assess the relationships between these variables in students from families who worked with tobacco and families who did not.

Chi square analysis of female adolescent smoking behavior revealed a significant association between the instances of adolescent smoking and age, friend smoking status and sibling …

Cigarette Advertising To Women: Taking Responsibility, Mary Guinan Jul 1988

Cigarette Advertising To Women: Taking Responsibility, Mary Guinan

School of Public Health Faculty Research

A variety of magazines are directed at American women. Some emphasize fashion, while others cover child rearing, homemaking, or gardening; still others stress career, coping with multiple women's roles, or feminism. Almost without exception, women's health concerns are periodically addressed by these magazines. Because women are the target audience, I have always assumed that these publications have women's best interests at heart. Is this a realistic assumption? I'm not sure. I also do not know what influence women's magazines have on women's health behavior, but I think it is substantial. If this is so, then shouldn't we hold these publications …

The Application Of The Peabody Developmental Motor Scales Administered To 20 Developmentally Delayed Children, Jan H. Henderson Jul 1988

The Application Of The Peabody Developmental Motor Scales Administered To 20 Developmentally Delayed Children, Jan H. Henderson

Community & Environmental Health Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this research was to provide physical and occupational therapists with empirical data and clinical information that will enable them to better understand and utilize the Peabody Developmental Motor Scales (PDMS) in the assessment of children who potentially may need physical and/or occupational therapy. The PDMS was administered to 20 developmentally delayed children between the ages of 24 and 83 months, who were receiving both physical and occupational therapy in the Chesapeake Public School System. The PDMS was also administered to 20 normal subjects between the ages of 24 and 77 months that were volunteers from the PTA …

Commentary: The Lead Poisoning Epidemic, Wornie L. Reed Jun 1988

Commentary: The Lead Poisoning Epidemic, Wornie L. Reed

Trotter Review

It is more dangerous than some forms of cancer — yet it is virtually ignored by the American public. It has seriously afflicted a much higher segment of the population than some diseases that were called “epidemics” — yet it has received little public attention. What we have here is a public failure, a failure to recognize that this disease — lead poisoning — is a serious threat to our health. It has already permanently damaged tens of thousands of babies, children and adults in this nation. And the list of victims is still growing.

Lead Poisoning: A Health Epidemic In The Black Community, Wornie L. Reed Jun 1988

Lead Poisoning: A Health Epidemic In The Black Community, Wornie L. Reed

Trotter Review

Lead poisoning in humans has been identified as a cause of high blood pressure, heart disease, birth defects, complications in pregnancies and developmental problems in infants. It is a health problem of epidemic dimensions in the black community. This serious health problem is yet another example of the production of “illth” in the modern society. As the means of production create wealth for some sectors of society they also create illth.

Osteoporosis As A Community Health Problem: Lessons Learned From Studying Hypertension, Michael Kleerekoper, Dorothy A. Nelson Jun 1988

Osteoporosis As A Community Health Problem: Lessons Learned From Studying Hypertension, Michael Kleerekoper, Dorothy A. Nelson

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

Campaigns to increase the medical and lay communities' awareness and understanding of the problems of unrecognized and untreated hypertension have led to a progressive decline in morbidity and mortality from hypertension-related diseases. While osteoporosis is also a community health problem, educational and awareness campaigns are still in their infancy and decades may pass before these result in a declining morbidity and mortality from osteoporosis. We identify areas where concepts learned from years of hypertension research might be applicable lo the study of osteoporosis as a community health problem and thereby lessen the time needed to effect a declining morbidity and …

Significance Of Antinuclear Antibody (Ana) Immunofluorescent Patterns And Titers In Systemic Lupus Erythematosus Nephritis, Syed Akbar, Abel I. Tello, Usana Luvira, Rollin Heinzerling, Raymond Romanski, Nathan W. Levin, Thomas K. H. Burnham Jun 1988

Significance Of Antinuclear Antibody (Ana) Immunofluorescent Patterns And Titers In Systemic Lupus Erythematosus Nephritis, Syed Akbar, Abel I. Tello, Usana Luvira, Rollin Heinzerling, Raymond Romanski, Nathan W. Levin, Thomas K. H. Burnham

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

Seventy-three patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) nephritis were studied for up to eight years using sequential serologic and renal function tests and renal biopsies. Antinuclear antibody (ANA) patterns and titers were classified into two systems: nonparticulate and particulate. We found a close relationship between disease activity and changes in titers of the nonparticulate peripheral homogeneous system. These changes predicted imminent flare-up or immunosuppressive induced remission of nephritis. Patients with the thready ANA pattern (part of the particulate system) as the main pattern showed a predominant association with membranous glomerulopathy and better renal function than those without threads. The association …
