Linking Social And Built Environmental Factors To Leisure-Time Physical Activity In Rural Cancer Survivors, Hannah Arem, Kathryn H Schmitz, Scherezade K Mama
Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
BACKGROUND: This study explored associations between social and built environmental factors and leisure-time physical activity (LTPA) in rural cancer survivors (RCS) and whether these associations differed by exercise stage of change (SOC).
METHOD: RCS (n = 219) completed questionnaires assessing LTPA, SOC, and social (social status, connectedness, support) and environmental (home environment, neighborhood environment) factors. Linear regression models examined associations between social and built environmental factors and LTPA and tested for moderation by SOC.
RESULTS: Half (50.7%) of RCS were physically active, and 49.3% were not active. Social factors positively associated with LTPA included subjective social status in the community …

Brief Review: Patient Pill Splitting. What Is The Appropriate Advice To Provide Patients In The Emergency Department?, Mohammad Rattu, James Espinosa, Gabriel Meister, Alan Lucerna
Rowan-Virtua Research Day
A number of patients have inquired about the practice of pill splitting. Cutting or splitting of pills can be used by patients to create an intermediate dose or to save on money where a higher dose is priced at relatively the same cost as a lower dose. In this review we discuss a number of issues related to medication safety and table splitting.
End Of Life Symptom Management In The Emergency Department, Alice Chang, James Espinosa, Alan Lucerna
End Of Life Symptom Management In The Emergency Department, Alice Chang, James Espinosa, Alan Lucerna
Rowan-Virtua Research Day
The Emergency Department is at times the only place patients can turn to for symptom relief. In an aging population, this means that more patients are presenting to the ED towards the end of life (EOL). Emergency medicine (EM) prides itself as a specialty that handles disease-directed treatment for a variety of acute conditions. In contrast, palliative care (PC) is focused on improving the quality of life (QOL). It has become essential for EM physicians to care for patients who are not seeking life-sustaining measures, but instead quality of life interventions. Patients with serious illness, even hospice patients, present to …

Background: While direct-to-consumer (DTC) at-home genetic testing like 23andMe provides users with potentially valuable information about their genetics and health risks, consumers might not have the background or knowledge to fully comprehend and interpret the results. This concept is a pressing issue because of the rise in popularity of these DTC genetic tests.
Purpose: The goal of this study is to elucidate the beliefs and attitudes of 23andMe users and determine the relationship between their test results and likelihood for taking medical action. The results from the study will give clinicians and primary care providers (PCPs) insight into how to …
The Correlation Between Traumatic Brain Injury And Incarceration Among Adult Males In The United States, Shadi Shams
The Correlation Between Traumatic Brain Injury And Incarceration Among Adult Males In The United States, Shadi Shams
Rowan-Virtua Research Day
The United States has one of the largest growing prison populations in the world. A large amount of social and economic resources go towards the cost and maintenance of correctional facilities each year. Additionally, the current correctional programs are insufficient in assisting inmates with getting back to society; especially those with traumatic brain injury (TBI) who often remain undiagnosed and are usually treated unfairly in the prison system instead of receiving the appropriate help. Prior scholarly work has shown that patients in the post-TBI stage are more likely to enter the judicial system. In the recent population-based cohort study, the …

The opioid epidemic poses substantial risk to society. Providers must ensure that their patients understand the uses and risks of both opioids and naloxone. One way to analyze this concept is via metacognition. This refers to a person’s knowledge about cognitive phenomena, and thus it regulates self-awareness abilities in decision making, such as planning and evaluating. It is not only important for providers to have knowledge on best practices, but also to have self-awareness, and confidence in their decision making to ensure optimal patient outcomes. True-false confidence weighted scoring can be utilized, whereby various levels of confidence are assessed from …

Rowan-Virtua Research Day
Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic and the launch of the vaccine, healthcare workers have been encouraging people to get vaccinated to prevent the spread of the virus. However, there is a significant number of people who are vaccine hesitant, or uncertain about receiving the COVID-19 vaccine and its booster. Vaccine hesitancy represents a state of opportunity to make positive change; therefore, it is crucial for healthcare workers to identify those who are in this population. When factors contributing to the vaccine hesitancy, including gender, age, ethnicity, education level, and income were studied, it was found that women, those …

The Myth Of Wellness: Deconstructing High, Contemporary Black Maternal Mortality Rates In The United States, Inaara Sultanali '23
Senior Scholarly and Creative Symposium
Maternal mortality is widely acknowledged as one of many general indicators of overall health of a population, of status of women in society, and of functioning of the health system (World Health Organization [WHO], 2001). The United States, among one of the most high-income countries, ranks near the top in maternal mortality and the trend is increasingly exacerbating (Association of American Medical Colleges [AAMC], 2022). There are stark racial disparities within the United States’ maternal mortality rates; Black women in the United States are three to four times more likely to die from a pregnancy-related death than their White counterparts …

An Investigation Of Resistance Training Behavior, Non-Specific Psychological Distress, And Perceived Barriers To Resistance Training In Self-Identifying Female Undergraduate Students, Jody Sobel
Master's Theses
The prevalence and severity of depression symptoms amongst college students, specifically female identifying undergraduate students, is worrisome. There is a great deal of research that suggests a relationship between exercise, specifically resistance training (RT), and mental health. That said, current literature suggests that many female identifying students are not engaging due to perceived barriers. This, perhaps because of the plethora of barriers one can perceive. The purpose of this study was multifold 1) to examine the prevalence and severity of non-specific psychological distress; 2) to determine if there were differences between Kessler 6 Non-Specific Psychological Distress Scale (K6) categories (i.e., …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations
BACKGROUND: Meeting the needs of a round-the-clock and globalized society has led to an increase in long working hours. This trend has been accompanied by a corresponding rise in sleep disorders and subsequent use of sedating medications. Overtime hours have been associated with adverse health outcomes such as cardiovascular diseases, symptoms of psychological distress, and health behaviors, including risky intake of alcohol and smoking. Hence, the main objectives of this three-paper dissertation were to examine the multi-faceted relationship between working hours, the use of prescription sleep aids, the onset of psychological distress, and the use of health care services. A Twin Study Of Genetic Heritage And Environmental Influences On Tobacco Susceptibility And Initiation On Early Age, Yadi Liu
Capstone Experience: Master of Public Health
Purpose: Tobacco product susceptibility is defined as the interest a person has to start smoking. Tobacco product initiation refers to whether a person has ever used tobacco products. We aim to understand and explain how genetic and environmental factors affect tobacco products' susceptibility and initiation in children. Methods: The classical twin model estimates three sources of variance: additive genetic (A), shared environmental (C), and unique environments (E). Each source of variance is latent and is calculated from the similarity in the correlations of twin pairs on a phenotype. The magnitude of difference in the correlation of a particular …

Cultivating A Robust Safety Culture Through Identifying And Overcoming Barriers Within Organizations, Morgan Shradar
Capstone Experience: Master of Public Health
The hierarchical power structure within healthcare and response teams may impede communication about safety risks and violations. In developing or enhancing the safety culture within the emergency response to infectious disease events in healthcare organizations, the hierarchy of controls can be utilized to evaluate successful transmission prevention or further harm to responding teams. Within the tool, administrative controls focus on policies, procedures, and practices that minimize the risk of exposure/transmission. The idea of a safe culture emerged following the Chernobyl Disaster, in which a combination of human and system failures led to this emergency. Safety culture has been integrated into …
