Aggressive, Adaptive, And Underestimated: From Allergy To Arboviruses, The Rise Of The Lone Star Tick, Emily Ellen Owens Pickle
Theses and Dissertations
Once considered a nuisance with little medical importance, the lone star tick (Amblyomma americanum, Acari:Ixodidae) has emerged as a formidable vector driving a new era of public health threats across the United States of America. This dissertation traces the rise of the lone star tick from obscurity to infamy, exploring its expanding geographic range, unique immunologic impacts on humans, and role in the transmission of emerging tickborne viruses. Through a series of integrated studies, this work characterizes the epidemiology, immunology, and ecological context of tick-borne diseases in the southeastern U.S., with a particular focus on α-Gal syndrome (AGS), …

Inorganic Nanoparticle And Nanoplastic Transformations And The Impact On Biouptake By Freshwater Algal Cells Using Single Cell And Single Particle Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry, Elizabeth Carey Bair
Theses and Dissertations
The ubiquitous presence of nanoparticles (NPs) and nanoplastics (NPPs) and their effects on environmental and human health is a significant concern. They are used in every aspect of our lives, and while they offer many benefits, there are concerns about their impacts on ecosystems and human health. The primary aim of this dissertation is to quantify NP and NPP transformations in the presence of algae and determine how those transformations influence bioavailability. The methodology involves two complementary analytical techniques: single particle (SP) and single cell (SC) inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). These techniques are tested and applied to two …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Indigenous communities internationally have demonstrated remarkable strength despite significant challenges. Health disparities among Indigenous peoples persist due to historical injustices and ongoing racial discrimination, not inherent vulnerabilities. Disparities are rooted in a legacy of colonisation, systemic exclusion, and socio-economic inequities impacting access to healthcare, education, and employment. Preliminary searches show limited literature on models of care for remote living Indigenous children. This review aimed to identify internationally, effective models of care for Indigenous children in rural and remote areas. A scoping review was conducted, analysing literature on models of care for remote Indigenous children. This study followed the JBI’s Scoping …

Lung cancer continues to be the leading cause of cancer-related deaths globally. Unraveling the regulators behind lung cancer growth and its metastatic spread, along with understanding the underlying mechanisms, is crucial for developing novel and effective therapeutic strategies. While much research has focused on identifying potential oncogenes or tumor suppressors, the roles of certain genes can vary depending on the context and may even exhibit contradictory effects. In this study, we demonstrate that acyl-CoA binding domain containing 3 (ACBD3), a Golgi resident protein, promotes primary lung cancer growth by recruiting phosphatidylinositol (PI)-4-kinase IIIβ (PI4KB) to the Golgi, thereby enhancing oncogenic …

Chimeric antigen receptor T cell (CAR-T) therapy is an effective treatment for relapsed-refractory large B-cell lymphoma (LBCL). However, toxicities, particularly cytokine release syndrome (CRS) and immune effector cell-associated neurotoxicity syndrome (ICANS), remain significant concerns. Analyze temporal trends, risk factors, and associations between these toxicities and their severity. In this registry study by the Center for International Blood and Marrow Transplant Research, we studied CRS and ICANS in 1916 LBCL patients treated with commercial CAR-T therapies (axicabtagene ciloleucel 74.9%, tisagenlecleucel 25.1%) between 2018 and 2020. Outcomes include development of CRS/ICANS, timing and severity according to ASTC grading, overall survival (OS). Risk …

The Artichoke Model is a conceptual framework developed to support the understanding of the breadth and influence of food environments in Early Childhood Education and Care (ECEC) settings. It identifies twelve interrelated components spanning food provision, mealtime practices, curriculum integration, staff capacity, family engagement, and systemic enablers such as policy, equity, and environmental sustainability. Represented visually as an artichoke with the child at its centre, the model encourages holistic analysis, recognising that sustainable change requires the interconnected operation of all components, rather than isolated interventions. The Artichoke Model is intended as a tool for researchers, policymakers, and advocates to guide …

Obesity in the Rio Grande Valley (RGV) of Texas remains a critical public health concern, with rates (46.9%) significantly exceeding those of Texas (36%) and the U.S. (34%) (p < 0.001). This study used 2024 County Health Rankings data to analyze environmental and socioeconomic contributors to obesity across 240 Texas counties, with a population-weighted focus on Hidalgo, Cameron, Starr, and Willacy counties. The RGV exhibited markedly poorer access to exercise, higher rates of physical inactivity, lower Food Environment Index scores (FEI = 4.3 vs. 5.7 in Texas), higher rates of uninsurance, worse patient-to–primary care physician (PCP) ratios (2152:1 vs. Texas 1660:1), and increased preventable hospitalizations. Multiple linear regression identified physical inactivity (β = 0.6, p = 0.01) and access to exercise (β = −0.02, p = 0.02) as significant predictors of obesity. Notably, higher uninsured rates were associated with lower reported obesity, likely due to underdiagnosis in the absence of routine care. These findings emphasize the need for targeted interventions addressing food access, environmental and recreational infrastructure, along with healthcare infrastructure in the RGV, where socioeconomic disadvantage and structural barriers magnify the impact of national obesity trends on the regional level.

Introduction: Network hyperexcitability (NH) is observed in patients with early-stage Alzheimer's disease (AD), emerging decades before cognitive decline. A key molecular determinant of NH is voltage-gated Na+ channel 1.6 (Nav1.6), which mediates action potential firing in CA1 hippocampal neurons. Ameliorating NH through inhibition of the glycogen-synthase kinase 3β (GSK3β/Nav1.6 complex may provide immediate benefits to cognition and memory and slow AD progression.
Methods: Hight-throughput virtual screening and multiple in vitro biological assays were utilized to identify compound 1063. Patch-clamp electrophysiology and electroencephalogram recordings were utilized to functionally assess 1063 in models of AD neuropathology.
Results: Building on previous studies identifying …

Metastasis is the predominant cause of cancer mortality, primarily driven by complex tumor-host interactions within specialized metastatic niches. Recent advances in single-cell technologies have provided unprecedented insights into metastatic niche formation, evolution and function, including how primary tumors precondition distant organs for metastases and how disseminated tumor cells dynamically interact with host cells to modulate their environments. Integrated single-cell studies across multiple cancer types have also revealed divergent and convergent metastatic adaptation strategies. These findings collectively highlight metastasis as a dynamic, cooperative process shaped by intricate tumor-host interactions, and provide a foundation for novel therapeutic strategies targeting components of the …

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is the leading cause of lower respiratory tract infections in children worldwide, while human noroviruses (HuNoV) are a leading cause of epidemic and sporadic acute gastroenteritis. Generating full-length genome sequences for these viruses is crucial for understanding viral diversity and tracking emerging variants. However, obtaining high-quality sequencing data is often challenging due to viral strain variability, quality, and low titers. Here, we present a set of comprehensive oligonucleotide probe sets designed from 1,570 RSV and 1,376 HuNoV isolate sequences in GenBank. Using these probe sets and a capture enrichment sequencing workflow, 85 RSV positive nasal swab …

Introduction
Pregnant women are at increased risk of severe manifestations of COVID-19, resulting in ICU admission, mechanical ventilation, and death compared to non-pregnant women. COVID-19 vaccines were approved for use in pregnant women in early 2022 by the World Health Organization, but permissive policies toward vaccine women differed by country. Background: Newborns depend on the transfer of IgG across the placenta to acquire protection against pathogens. We assessed the placental transfer of SARS-CoV-2 antibodies, primarily derived from infection, from seropositive pregnant women enrolled in a pregnancy cohort in Kilifi, Kenya.
Methods :The study was nested within a prospective observational multi-country cohort study. All available paired maternal delivery and cord blood samples were selected. Maternal sera were tested for SARS-CoV-2 receptor binding domain (RBD) IgM/IgG total antibodies using the Wantai assay. For positive samples, maternal and corresponding cord blood samples were tested for SARS-CoV-2 IgG antibodies against the spike (anti-spike) and …
The Answer To Perimenstrual Distress Is Not Automatically Prescription: Review Of Allopathic And Integrative Approaches To Mental Health Care For Pms & Pmdd Symptoms, Grace Oja
University Honors Theses
Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) and premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) affect a notable percentage of people who menstruate. PMS/PMDD have a wide range of symptoms that negatively impact mental well-being and quality of life. This review is the culmination of a database search to review current allopathic treatments for PMS/PMDD, which often include oral contraceptives and antidepressants, and explore evidence-based methods for integrative and alternative treatments to address some of the limitations of standard allopathic care, including limitations on which symptoms they address and side effects. This paper aims to examine how integrative medicine may expand existing treatments for PMS and PMDD …

Objective: Physical activity opportunities, such as recess, in educational settings are vital yet only a handful of states have policies in place to ensure daily minimum recess allotment. We aim to investigate associations between physical activity during recess and other time periods to better understand the extent to which recess physical activity is related to physical activity throughout the week. Methods: Children K-5th grade were from four schools in Little Rock, Arkansas. Children wore accelerometers on their waist to assess physical activity across the week. Chi-square and t-tests or Wilcoxon rank-sum tests and multi-level mixed effects generalized linear regression were …

Background: When people living with HIV develop pulmonary tuberculosis, it often manifests without detectable acid-fast bacilli on sputum microscopy. We aimed to assess the diagnostic accuracy of stool Xpert MTB/RIF Ultra (hereafter, Ultra) for Mycobacterium tuberculosis detection among adults with HIV.
Methods: This multicentre, prospective diagnostic accuracy study was done in outpatient and inpatient health centres in Eswatini, Mozambique, and Uganda. We enrolled adults aged 15 years and older with HIV with presumptive tuberculosis. We evaluated the diagnostic accuracy of stool Ultra using the simple one-step processing method against a composite microbiological reference standard (CMRS) including three WHO-recommended tuberculosis diagnostic …
