Adolescent Pregnancy And Sexually Transmitted Diseases: Case Report, Ruby L. Holloway, Richard Smith

More than 1 million teenagers become pregnant every year in the United States. Nearly one-half of the pregnancies are carried to term, while a similar number end in abortion. In Michigan this amounts to approximately 34,000 teenage pregnancies (ages 15 to 19). These adolescent patients have a high incidence of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). Of the pregnant teens at Henry Ford Hospital. 60% present with one or more STDs. We discuss the case of a 13-year-old pregnant girl who presented at five weeks estimated gestation with gonorrhea, chlamydia, and appendiceal perforation, resulting in subsequent spontaneous abortion. Alzheimer disease is a progressive degenerative neurological disorder of insidious onset characterized by the deterioration of cognitive functioning. Little is known about the etiology and epidemiology of this condition. The only risk factor consistently associated with Alzheimer disease is advancing age. As the population of the elderly continues to grow, many public agencies, including those in Michigan, are concerned about social, personal, and financial implications and seek estimates of the number of people with dementia. To date, mortality rates based on vital statistics have been noninformative because Alzheimer disease is difficult lo diagnose clinically and has been considered to be …

Medical Care Of Aids In New England: Costs And Implications, Stewart J. Landers, George R. Seage Iii

New England Journal of Public Policy

This article presents an overview of cost issues related to AIDS. Data from the Massachusetts Cost of AIDS Study are combined with epidemiological projections to estimate the cost of treating people diagnosed with AIDS in New England. Aggregate inpatient, ambulatory, and home care costs are estimated to be $96.9 million and $524.8 million through 1987 and 1991, respectively. These estimates represent a relatively small percentage of total health care costs for all illnesses over the same time period.

KWRRI Research Reports

A 6-week study was made in the summer of 1971 as an initial effort to determine the extent of pollution that the three sewage disposal plants in Jessamine County, Kentucky, are contributing to its streams. With the rapid population increase in Lexington and nearby municipalities, this study should furnish a basis of comparison for future investigations. Eighteen collecting stations were established in riffle areas of Hickman and Jessamine Creeks, and coliform bacteria, macro-invertebrate populations, fish populations and chemical water quality of each riffle area were studied.
