Awareness Of And Rights Related To The Patient Self-Determination Act Of 1990 By Selected Post-Adolescent College Students, Toni M. Vargas
Community & Environmental Health Theses & Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to determine if the Patient Self-Determination Act was effective in providing information to young adults and will young adults not only have an accurate understanding of their health care rights but sufficient opportunity to exercise those rights. From a sample of convenience, 83 college students were randomly selected to complete a questionnaire. The questionnaire contained 71 questions devised to reflect various aspects of the Patient Self-Determination Act. Five additional questions were asked to determine a generalized profile of the students. Data analysis of the responses identified 5 significant legal misunderstandings and 5 significant medical …

Characteristics Of Habitual Dysfunctional Behaviors, Carole Ryan Serena
Characteristics Of Habitual Dysfunctional Behaviors, Carole Ryan Serena
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The suggestion that habitual dysfunctional behavior disorders (HDBs) have a common underlying cluster of addictive characteristics and dynamics is new. A broad research base which would support this theory has not kept current with clinical In order successes. In order to address the need for relevant research, an anonymous cross sectional study was designed to identify, describe and compare variables associated with 15 habitual dysfunctional behaviors (HDBs) in a sample (N =176) from a broad spectrum of socioeconomic groups.
People reporting two different HDBs (alcohol and food-related behaviors) were compared to those not reporting any HDBs on levels of four …

Hospital Patients' And Nurses' Perceptions Of Quality, June Hansen Larrabee
Hospital Patients' And Nurses' Perceptions Of Quality, June Hansen Larrabee
Theses and Dissertations (ETD)
Hospital quality assurance programs have been provider-oriented, focusing on structure and process elements of care rather than outcomes specific to patient needs and values. This study tested the relationship between quality and value, proposed in Larrabee's model of quality, by developing prediction indices for patient and nurse quality and value.
The sample consisted of 199 adult patients. Patient quality was measured by a 100 mm visual analog scale (VAS) (PQUALG) and a modified version of an existing instrument (PQUALT). Patient value was measured as patient goal achievement (PGOAL), the average of three VAS scores for patient defined goals …
An Assessment Of Food Sanitation Knowledge And Practice Of Restaurant Workers In Taichung City, Taiwan, Shiow-Fu Sheu
An Assessment Of Food Sanitation Knowledge And Practice Of Restaurant Workers In Taichung City, Taiwan, Shiow-Fu Sheu
Community & Environmental Health Theses & Dissertations
Taichung city is located in the western middle part of Taiwan, with a population of nearly 800,000. The total number of food service establishments in Taichung City is more than 10,000. Among these, nearly 2000 of the food establishments are considered restaurants. For such a large number of restaurants, the total number of food sanitation inspectors is 16. In order to overcome the shortage of the food inspector manpower problem, Taichung City Health Department has set up a "Food Sanitation Self-inspection Program", in an effort to encourage the restaurants to direct more attention to food sanitation problems. In the meantime, …

Aids And The Homeless Of Boston, James J. O'Connell, Joan Lebow
New England Journal of Public Policy
Homeless persons with AIDS and HIV infection face significant health hazards during the daily struggle for survival on the streets and in the crowded shelters of our cities. This article offers a historical perspective on the evolution of the AIDS epidemic within the homeless population of Boston and examines the demographics, risk behaviors, and survival statistics of that epidemic. The Boston Health Care for the Homeless Program is presented as a model of service delivery that offers quality health care to homeless persons with AIDS while addressing the special needs of those bound by the immediacy of the next meal …

The Structure And Function Of Urban Pharmacies: Visits To Community Pharmacies In Inner-City Chicago, Thomas J. Reutzel, Laura A. Wilson
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
Visits were made to 21 pharmacies in two poor neighborhoods on the west side of Chicago and interviews conducted with pharmacists-in-charge. The objective of the study was to provide a comprehensive description of the function, capabilities, and problems of urban pharmacy. We present results on the structure and function of these inner-city pharmacies. The pharmacies fit one of three structural forms: chain, independent, or medical center. The majority of respondents viewed the function of the inner-city pharmacy as patient-centered but also identified several barriers to effective patient communication. The results suggest that inner-city physicians and pharmacists should communicate with patients …

Cerebral Oxygen Extraction During Severe Viral Encephalitis, Mark G. Goetting, Marwan L. Haddad
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
Viral encephalitis can cause devastating neurologic injury. Little is known about cerebral hemodynamics and metabolism in this condition. We report two patients with severe encephalitis, one proven and the other suspected to be due to herpes simplex, in whom the global cerebral oxygen extraction ratio (OER) and carbon dioxide (CO2) responsiveness was assessed. OER was low in both patients throughout the acute period. CO2 responsiveness was present initially in both and disappeared later in the more severely affected child. These cases demonstrate that cerebral hyperemia occurs in severe viral encephalitis and that hyperventilation can effectively reduce the intracranial pressure.

By And For Women: Involving Women In The Development Of Reproductive Health Care Materials, Valerie J. Hull, Barbara L. Ibrahim, Nadia Farah, Blanca Figueroa, Margaret Winn
Poverty, Gender, and Youth
The studies in this issue of Quality/Calidad/Qualité describe three efforts to involve women in the development of reproductive health care materials in different settings in the developing world. In Cairo, a women's health collective produced a comprehensive reference book for women; in Peru, a woman's group, with the extensive involvement of their nonliterate audience, developed a series of illustrated teaching materials; and in the South Pacific, an all-woman production crew produced three motivation and teaching videos developed in response to the expressed needs of Pacific Island women. Despite contrasts in the characteristics of the intended audiences, the development process, and …

Faire Oeuvre De Pionnier: Atteindre Les Femmes Agriculteurs En Zambie Occidentale, Janice Jiggins, Paul Maimbo, Mary Masona
Poverty, Gender, and Youth
Coprolite Analysis: A Biological Perspective On Archaeology, Karl J. Reinhard, Baughn M. Bryant Jr
Coprolite Analysis: A Biological Perspective On Archaeology, Karl J. Reinhard, Baughn M. Bryant Jr
Karl Reinhard Publications
The most remarkable dietary remains recoverable from archaeological contexts are coprolites. Coprolites are desiccated or mineralized feces that are preserved in sheltered and open sites in arid regions, primarily in the New World. These dietary remains are remarkable from several perspectives. They typically contain a variety of macroscopic and microscopic remains that form interrelated data sets for the reconstruction of diets. Because contexts containing coprolites are typified by excellent preservation, the remains coprolites contain tend to be in better states of preservation than dietary remains recovered from nonfecal deposits. Coprolites also contain the well-preserved remains of intestinal parasites and pathogens …
Dental Patients' Knowledge, Beliefs, And Perceptions About Dentistry And Aids, Sara S. Plaspohl
Dental Patients' Knowledge, Beliefs, And Perceptions About Dentistry And Aids, Sara S. Plaspohl
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations (1964–2006)
The majority of Americans view AIDS as the most important health problem faced today. Despite efforts to educate the public, the literature suggests that misperceptions exist concerning HIV transmission. The documented case of a Florida dentist who transmitted the HIV virus to five dental patients focused the public's attention on its perceived vulnerability to contracting HIV during a dental visit. The purpose' of this descriptive study was to identify the dental patient's perceived risk of acquiring the AIDS virus during a dental visit and to then determine whether the perceived risk was related to the patient's level of oral hygiene. …
Preliminary Epidemiological Interpretation Of The Intrinsic And Extrinsic Factors Contributing To The Coverage And Participation Rates Of The Vaccination Program In Arssi, Ethiopia, Muchie Kidanu
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Many immunization programs in developing countries arr now undergoing a period of rapid utilization. Innovative strategies, such as immunization holidays, are being tried. Political commitment and enthusiasm are high. There is a strong desire by health professionals to protect the lives of many children from the untimely death and/or disability resulting from infectious diseases preventable by vaccination.
Evaluation of an immunization program can benefit other elements of the health system, particularly those that are not amenable to objective evaluation as immunization. In this case, immunization can serve as an indicator of the overall performance of the health system. The problems …

Time-Courses In The Retention Of Food Material In The Bivalves Potamocorbula Amurensis And Macoma Balthica: Significance To The Absorption Of Carbon And Chromium, Alan W. Decho, Samuel N. Luoma
Faculty Publications
Time courses for ingestion, retention and release via feces of microbial food was investigated using 2 bivalves with different feeding strategies, Potamocorbula amurensis, and Macoma balthica. The results showed 2 pathways for the uptake of food material in these clams. The first is represented by an initial label pulse in the feces. The second pathway operates over longer time periods. Inert 51Cr-labeled beads were used to determine time frames for these pathways. The first pathway, involving extracellular digestion and intestinal uptake, is relatively inefficient in the digestion of bacterial cells by P. amurensis but more efficient in …

Food Handling Practices Among Independent-Living Elderly, Judith Dianne Mcdonough
Food Handling Practices Among Independent-Living Elderly, Judith Dianne Mcdonough
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Food has long been recognized as a vehicle of disease transmission; there are more reported illness associated with the consumption of food than all other environmental factors combined. The handling and storage of food are potentially dangerous and demanding chores for those who may have the sensory losses associated with advancing age, fragile health, and limited resources.
Group-administered questionnaires on the knowledge, attitudes, and practices of food handling were given to 276 seniors, aged 55 to 90, from ten mobile home parks randomly selected from San Bernardino and Riverside counties. As an indicator of possible foodborne illness, the questionnaire asked …
Psychological Factors Relevant To The Prehospital And In-Hospital Phases Of Acute Myocardial Infarction, Lori W. Kenyon, Mark W. Ketterer, Richard C. Preisman
Psychological Factors Relevant To The Prehospital And In-Hospital Phases Of Acute Myocardial Infarction, Lori W. Kenyon, Mark W. Ketterer, Richard C. Preisman
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
Recognition and treatment of psychological factors relevant to the acute prehospital and in-hospital phases of myocardial infarction (Ml) are reviewed. Various emotions and personality characteristics can be both risk factors for and consequences of acute Ml. Components of the Type A behavior pattern and levels of somatic and emotional awareness have been linked with excessive treatment-seeking delay for Ml patients. Psychiatric conditions such as panic disorder may mimic symptomatic presentation of Ml and therefore have implications for differential diagnosis in the emergency room. Additionally. anxiety, depression, and neurobehavioral disorders such as delirium are relatively common during the hospitalization period and …
The Role Of Echocardiography In Acute Myocardial Infarction, Mohsin Alam
The Role Of Echocardiography In Acute Myocardial Infarction, Mohsin Alam
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
Our institutional experience with two-dimensional echocardiography and color flow Doppler tests, as welt as a review of the literature, reveals that echocardiography is useful in diagnosing myocardial infarction. Furthermore, complications of myocardial infarction such as mitral regurgitation with or without papillary muscle rupture, acquired ventricular septal defect, true and false left ventricular aneurysms, left ventricular thrombi, right ventricular infarction, and pericardial effusion in the setting of acute infarction can he detected by cardiac ultrasound. Echocardiography is also useful in assessing prognosis of postinfarction patients based on degree of left ventricular dysfunction. This test, however, is not 100% sensitive and specific …
