We studied the effect of the superficial temporal artery to middle cerebral artery bypass (STA-MCA) procedure on neuropsychological function. Nineteen patients with cerebrovascular disease of the anterior carotid circulation (12 on surgical and seven on medical therapy) received an extensive battery of neuropsychological tests; the average test-retest interval was eight weeks. Both groups improved on some measures, and no patients deteriorated. There was no evidence of greater improvement by the surgical group. The results are compatible with a spontaneous remission/practice effect interpretation. A review of the carotid endarterectomy and STA-MCA bypass literature suggests that the null hypothesis of no effect …

The composition of phosphate metabolites and the intracellular pH in erythrocytes from a patient with hereditary pyrimidine-5'-nucleotidase deficiency were examined using 31P NMR spectroscopy. Several resonances were identified in spectra from intact cells and from extracts. The 2,3-bisphosphoglycerate line intensities were normal but the NTP resonances were about twice normal due to the presence of millimolar quantities of pyrimidine phosphates. Several intense resonances were also observed in the diphosphodiester region of the spectrum. One compound contributing to these lines has been identified as cytidine diphosphocholine. The resonances of NTPs were in a position indicating that the additional triphosphates were …

Bilan Des Études Portant Sur L'Oxyde D'Éthylène, Diane Berthelette, Lucien Lewys Abenhaim

Observations Suggesting A Possible Link Between Gammacarboxyglutamic Acid And Porcine Bioprosthetic Valve Calcification, Joseph A. Helpern, Stephen J. Mcgee, Jeanne M. Riddle
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
Observations that link gammacarboxyglutamic acid (Gla) peptides with ectopic calcification are accumulating in the literature and may be summarized as follows: 1) Gla peptides selectively bind calcium and hydroxyapatite. 2) The presence of detectable levels of Gla in calcified tissue is concurrent with the onset of mineralization. 3) In an animal model, osteocalcin (a Gla-containing protein) accounts for more than 90% of all the Gla found in the resulting subcutaneously implanted calcified leaflet. 4) Vitamin D stimulates osteocalcin synthesis in cultures of osteosarcoma cells, and in vitamin D deficient rats subcutaneously implanted valve leaflets are not calcified. 5) Gla content …

Evaluation Of The Urban Indian Health Program's Management And Administrative Capabilities And Training Conference To Reinforce Desirable Management And Administrative Techniques, American Indian Health Care Association
Native Health Database Full Text
A study was conducted to evaluate the management and administration of urban Indian health programs by the Urban Program Branch at the Indian Health Service (IHS). In order to do this, an assessment was made of the ability of the Urban Program Office and the IHS Area Offices to successfully carry out their duties and responsibilities to the urban Indian health programs; and the ability of the individual urban Indian health programs to meet their IHS contract and grant obligations.

An Analysis Of A Sample Of Parents And University Freshmen In Regard To Their Attitudes Toward The Needs Of Sex Education In Community Schools, Linda C. Aleksa
An Analysis Of A Sample Of Parents And University Freshmen In Regard To Their Attitudes Toward The Needs Of Sex Education In Community Schools, Linda C. Aleksa
Community & Environmental Health Theses & Dissertations
This study attempted to investigate a sample of both parents' and college freshmens' attitudes toward sex education, and the content and timing of sex education in the Tidewater schools. Two Likert-type scales each containing ten statements were administered in order to survey attitudes. A statistically significant difference was found in scores on the attitude toward content and timing of sex education scale between parents and college freshmen. Parents demonstrated a more favorable attitude toward sex education as an integral component of the overall educational curriculum. The majority of parents indicated support for including important aspects such as reproduction and indicated …

Hyperthermia, F. K. Storm

This report describes the history of hyperthermia and reviews current forms of treatment at both low (42°-43°C) and higher (<45°C) temperatures. Hyperthermia treatment at low temperatures includes fluid immersion and irrigation, regional perfusion with heated fluids, and electromagnetic radiofrequency waves. Low-temperature hyperthermia has also been combined with radiation therapy and with chemotherapy in recent clinical trials. At higher temperatures, we and other investigators have also had promising, preliminary results in treating tumors safely. With the specialized radiofrequency instrumentation we have developed to apply hyperthermia at any depth without preferential surface tissue heating, further clinical investigation of both superficial and deep internal solid tumors is now possible. Recent data suggest that hyperthermia may be an especially effective form of therapy for larger tumors that resist standard forms of treatment. Clinical trials are now underway to determine the most therapeutic dose/time regimen, to determine toxicity and therapeutic enhancement ratios of combined chemotherapy and x-irradiation with hyperthermia, and to evaluate any changes in the host immune system with such therapies.
