The Legal Case For Equity In Local Climate Action Planning, Amy E. Turner
The Legal Case For Equity In Local Climate Action Planning, Amy E. Turner
Sabin Center for Climate Change Law
Over the last half decade, local climate action plans have regularly come to incorporate considerations of racial and socioeconomic equity, recognizing the ways in which low-income communities and communities of color experience earlier and worse consequences from global warming, and these communities are also at risk of being harmed by policies meant to address climate change. Until now, however, the discourse on equity in climate action planning has largely pertained to policy; it acknowledges the disproportionate harm that certain communities experience as a result of climate change and policies to address climate change, and suggests policy tools that can address …

Public-Private Partnerships (Ppp) In Technical Education: The Case Of Egypt’S Applied Technology Schools (Ats), Youstina Magdy
Theses and Dissertations
Technical education is a form of education that gained momentum in the 1800s and was considered as a parallel distinct model to general education by the post-war period. Public-private partnerships (PPPs) were one of the scaling up and enhancement efforts of technical education. In Egypt, the technical secondary education system has various school models; however, it was until 2018, when we first see the implementation of an PPP model with the establishment of the Applied Technology Schools (ATS). ATS schools aim at supplying the labor market with experienced skillful competent graduates in the demanded sectors in the Egyptian labor market, …

The Risk Perceptions And Evacuation Behaviors Of College Students In Coastal Communities: Exploring The Functionality Of The False Alarm And Desensitization Model, Saige Marisza Hill
The Risk Perceptions And Evacuation Behaviors Of College Students In Coastal Communities: Exploring The Functionality Of The False Alarm And Desensitization Model, Saige Marisza Hill
School of Public Service Theses & Dissertations
This research explores the complexity of individual response during hazards and disasters and the psychological factors that influence risk perception and response. Borrowing concepts from the false alarm theory of neurology and desensitization theory as applied to media, the false alarm and desensitization model explains the perpetuation of insufficient preparation and hazard response by individuals. The model features two primary components – hazard and disaster events resulting in false alarms and those resulting in desensitization – both of which decrease the likelihood of adequate response during subsequent events. Together, each model component leads to underestimating the potential for and severity …

Shades Of Housing: Real Estate Urbanism And State Planning In Egypt, Zeinab Nadeem
Theses and Dissertations
The housing crisis is a global dilemma, especially in the context of urban cities in developing countries. Housing affordability has become more challenging in the recent global and national turbulent economic conditions of rising inflation rates and construction costs, where Egypt is witnessing a surplus of vacant housing units that are either unsold or unoccupied with citizens involuntarily relocating to remote new cities. The government has also significantly engaged in real estate market speculation by offering public land for profits to private investors in the market since the 1990s. The shades of housing found in Egypt are the works of …

Settler Colonialism And Resistancein Palestine From 2009 To 2019, Belal S.M. Alakhras
Student Works (2020-2029)
In 1948, Israeli forces took over most of the Palestinian territory and forced the majority of Palestinians to leave their homes. Since then, Israel’s colonial endeavour against Palestinians has continued, and Palestinians have faced numerous attempts to erase their presence. Despite its efforts, Palestinian resistance has not achieved the end of Israeli control. This study examines the continuation of Israeli settler colonialism in the West Bank and Gaza Strip between 2009 and 2019. The research aims to provide insights into these key questions: what are the influencing factors on the Israeli government’s treatment of the Palestinians in the West Bank …

Approximately 10-20% of children with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) have treatment-resistant presentations, and there is likely interest in developing interventions for this patient group, which may include deep brain stimulation (DBS). The World Society for Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery has argued that at least two successful randomized controlled trials should be available before DBS treatment for a psychiatric disorder is considered "established." The FDA approved DBS for adults with treatment-resistant OCD under a humanitarian device exemption (HDE) in 2009, which requires that a device be used to manage or treat a condition impacting 8,000 or fewer patients annually in the United …

From Vertical To Horizontal Empowerment Of Women (In) Peace And Security: Toward A Feminist Perspective Of Human Security, Ma. Lourdes Veneracion-Rallonza
Political Science Department Faculty Publications
Human security, a people-centered approach to security, typically seeks to examine vulnerabilities and identify ways of protecting people from threats. However, people are not perennial victims—they also have agency and are capable of acting on their own. This study looks at how the Women, Peace, and Security (WPS) agenda has created both the discursive and actual spaces for women's agency, particularly in the case of women's civil society organizations (CSOs), as illustrated by their work on the ground. This chapter investigates how the Gaston Z. Ortigas Peace Institute (GZOPI), Sulong Peace, and Women Engaged in Action on United Nations Security …

Motivations, Policies And Performance: A Review Of China’S Culture ‘Going Out’ Strategy, Jihua Yang, David Ocon
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
Few countries have advanced their culture globally as China has done in the last two decades with its culture ‘going out’ strategy. Promoting cultural goods and services overseas and fostering cultural exchanges, the strategy is also part of the country’s efforts to advance its soft power abroad. Broadly, there are two contrasting perspectives on the strategy’s performance. Because of its stability and financial muscle, local analysts generally praise it, while the overarching official involvement provokes suspicion in some international contexts. This article provides a neutral assessment of the implementation, achievements, and impact of China’s culture ‘going out’ strategy, investigating its …

In their 2015 book International Public Relations and Public Diplomacy: Communication and Engagement, Guy J. Golan, Sung-Un Yang, and Denis F. Kinsey assembled renowned and leading scholars in public diplomacy and public relations to examine the conceptual and practical relationships between international public relations and public diplomacy. The book is a collection of various chapters integrating public diplomacy and public relations research. Therefore, it should apply ‘key lessons from public relations literature’ (Golan, Yang, 2015, p. 3). It applies some …

Umbrella Summaries
What is turnover?
The definition of turnover tends to somewhat vary in practice and research. The most common element is an employee leaving their job. Beyond that, turnover can be further defined as internal vs. external, voluntary vs. involuntary, functional vs. dysfunctional, and avoidable vs. unavoidable.
- Internal vs. external: Internal turnover means that the employee moves to a different job within the organization, whereas external means that the employee leaves the organization altogether.
