The Failure Of The Peaceful Road To Socialism: Chile 1970-1973, Trevor Andrew Iles

Masters Theses

On September 4, 1970 Salvador Allende became the first ever democratically elected Marxist president of Chile. In addition he headed a predominantly left-wing coalition government whose program entailed the achieving of socialism by peaceful means.

During the first six months of his administration Allende began to carry out a number of his policies in the areas of agrarian reform, nationalization of industries, and redistribution of income. These policies were populist in nature and succeeded in raising the level of support for the Unidad Popular government as shown by the results of the April 1971 Municipal elections. Saturation Patrol As A Deterrent To Crime, Erasmo J. Compatore Jan 1978

Saturation Patrol As A Deterrent To Crime, Erasmo J. Compatore

Master's Theses

In the United States, the rendering of police service is carried out by some of the world's finest forces which operate immediately adjacent to other agencies which have made no earnest move toward improving their methods in field operations since World War II. These deficient agencies seem to cling to tradition and oppose change even when innovations exist which have been shown to be more effective than present methods or when present methods are shown to be ineffective.

It is not surprising, therefore, that only in the last few years has the academician been considered of importance to law enforcement. …

More On Regulation: A Reply To Stephen Weiner, Clark C. Havighurst

Faculty Scholarship

In Volume 3, Number 3 of this journal, Professor Havighurst* wrote a brief Comment in which he observed that the function of health care cost-containment regulation is the rationing of health care resources, and argued that the fostering of health care consumers' and providers' free choice in the competitive marketplace is preferable to conventional cost-containment regulation as a mechanism for such rationing. He briefly outlined various reforms, including changes in federal tax treatment of health insurance premiums, aimed at implementing his ap- proach. Subsequently, in a Comment in Volume 4, Number 1, Stephen M.Weiner, then Chairman of the Massachusetts Rate …

Government Regulation And The Cost Of Housing, Murray L. Weidenbaum Dec 1977

Government Regulation And The Cost Of Housing, Murray L. Weidenbaum

Murray Weidenbaum Publications

One of the important factors in the rising prices in the housing market is the array of government regulations facing land developers, homebuilders, and financial institutions. Not all government regulation is bad, but the costs are often simply passed along to the consumer, essentially as a "hidden tax." This paper examines the various effects of housing regulation and outlines the procedures for change.
