An Analysis Of Selected Personnel Managers For Company Attitudes Toward Industrial Recreation In North Carolina, Cynthia Dean
An Analysis Of Selected Personnel Managers For Company Attitudes Toward Industrial Recreation In North Carolina, Cynthia Dean
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
This study was made in attempt to assess company attitudes toward industrial recreation in order to draw conclusions concerning present and future trends in employee recreation. A survey instrument was devised with the aid of a jury of experts to validate and improve upon the questionnaire. The questionnaires were distributed through the mail to the one hundred largest manufacturing firms in North Carolina. Personnel managers were asked to answer the survey as to reflect company attitudes and not necessarily thelr own. The questions pertained to areas such as recreational opportunities, amount of participation, utilization of recreational personnel, the availability of …

Multiple Constituencies, Differential Power, And The Question Of Effectiveness In Human Service Organizations, Patricia Yancey Martin
Multiple Constituencies, Differential Power, And The Question Of Effectiveness In Human Service Organizations, Patricia Yancey Martin
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
A multiple constituencies model of human service organizations identifies twelve interest groups which must be considered when effectiveness questions are raised. The differential power of the interest groups suggests that some groups' preferences are likely to be emphasized over others. The relationship between power inside the organization and that on the outside is analyzed. Recent trends in the growth andmiiitancy of professional associations and employee groups suggest that internal control by senior administrators is increasingly challenged and variable. Future studies of effectiveness in the human services are encouraged to remain sensitive to the effects of constituency interests and power on …
The Influence Of Bureaucratic Factors On Welfare Policy Implementation, Gerard S. Gryski, Charles L. Usher
The Influence Of Bureaucratic Factors On Welfare Policy Implementation, Gerard S. Gryski, Charles L. Usher
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
The authors argue that previous welfare policy research has suffered from its neglect of bureaucratic factors, as well as a tendency to exclude policy-making arenas above and below the state level. Using several measures of organizational structure, administrative professionalism, and within-state need, they attempt to relate these variables to within-state variations in welfare policy implementation. While certain socio-economic conditions were found to be significant determinants of this variation, of greater importance are characteristics of state welfare bureaucracies such as the degree of administrative centralization and the level of professionalism of administrative staff. Their research suggests the need for further refinement …

Templifier Heat Pump, Tony Conigliaro
Templifier Heat Pump, Tony Conigliaro
UMR-MEC Conference on Energy / UMR-DNR Conference on Energy
The national energy policy rightly addresses having coal assume a major share of the load carried by gas and oil. However, there is a basic strategy which is uniquely capable of solving much of the dilema. That strategy is to shift from our present oil/gas combustion energy economy to a coal - nuclear electric energy economy....
We can see that electric boilers are non competitive from an operating cost standpoint. But there is another way of applying electricity to the creation of useful heat and that is the heat pump. Several years ago, a Westinghouse feasibility study indicated that an …

Ratepayer Financing Of Solar Thermal Electric Commercial Demonstration Projects, Mark D. Jarmie, Jeff V. Conopask
UMR-MEC Conference on Energy / UMR-DNR Conference on Energy
Commercialization of a new energy supply technology requires demonstration of its feasibility to potential customers at each staqe of development. While small improvements of proven energy supply svstems are usually privately pioneered, larger or more uniaue research projects are often delaved as economic and technical concerns are assuaged through public sector R&D funding. For solar thermal central receivers, even though their technical viability has been tested on a small scale, acceptance by utilities will require full-scale field experiments and commercial-sized demonstration plants.

Rate Of Return Regulatory Policy -- The Bane Of Electric Utilities?, Charles David Laderoute
UMR-MEC Conference on Energy / UMR-DNR Conference on Energy
In the past, rate of return regulation served to the advantage of electric utility stockholders. Today this is no longer the case. Furthermore, owners cannot assume that utility management can or will work totally in their behalf. As a result, this paper presents as its main thesis that utility stockholders should band together into advocacy groups to support their right to a fair rate of return.

The Regulatory Nemesis, K. Daniel Hinkle
The Regulatory Nemesis, K. Daniel Hinkle
UMR-MEC Conference on Energy / UMR-DNR Conference on Energy
Energy sources are truly regulated from the bowels of the earth to the flame tip. Local, state and federal governments, whether by design or blind ineptitude, have created a maze of administrative regulations that affect the development of both current and future energy sources. Rather than discuss regulatory horror stories, it is the purpose of this paper to discuss the impacts of this maze of regulations on current and alternate energy sources.
The first section will review 16 federal acts that make up the regulatory nemesis. The second section will review an example of the maze in action on a …
