Symbolic Interaction And Social Planning: Perspectives From The Early Years, Roger A. Lohmann Mar 1978

Symbolic Interaction And Social Planning: Perspectives From The Early Years, Roger A. Lohmann

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

The principal thesis of this paper is that the inadequacies of recent efforts at social planning are essential failures of theory, rather than failures of practice. Economic, land use and social welfare planners it is suggested have all shared a common unwillingness or inability to abandon commitments to an essentially utilitarian rhetoric of reasoned behavior, wherein means are matched with ends, persons are viewed as essentially self-interested and goal-directed rational problem solvers operating on schedules of goal attainment known or predictable by the planners. Symbolic interaction theory has resources to revitalize planning theory. Selected publications by John Dewey, G.H. Mead, …

This issue of Review of Applied Urban Research features "Economic Indicators for the Midcontinent Metropolitan Areas, 1977."

Socio-economic data have long been important planning tools for policy makers, businessmen and investors. Since 1973, the Center for Applied Urban Research, with the cooperation of the Economic Development Council of the Greater Omaha Chamber of Commerce, has compiled and published quarterly data to assist readers in assessing the economic vitality of the Omaha area. In 1975, these quarterly indicators were expanded to include 25 metropolitan areas located in the eleven-state Midcontinent Region. Another revision occurred in 1977 when the Omaha subareas were …

This issue of Review of Applied Urban Research features "New Single-Family Houses Constructed in Douglas and Sarpy Counties During 1977," by Jack Ruff and Linda Ferring.

Home building has been called one of the brightest spots in the nation's economy in 1977, as construction increased 29 percent since 1976.1 Building permits issued in 1977 for residential units in Douglas and Sarpy counties indicate a 15 percent rise from 1976. The past year was the second year of increase in total permit units after the recessionary slump in construction activity early in the decade. Single-family housing permits have increased for three …

Attitudes Toward Proposed Changes At Mercy High School, Paul S. T. Lee

Publications

As in similar schools in cities throughout the nation, Omaha's Mercy High School has been confronted with enrollment declines during the past decade, with the city expanding toward the west and as educational preferences of Omaha Catholic families change. The Board of Directors was asked to consider four alternatives for changing the basic program of Mercy High School in order to reverse this trend. The Center for Applied Urban Research was then asked to assist the Board in assessing which of the alternatives would have the greatest potential for maintaining Mercy's educational excellence.

Identification Of Prime Residential Land In Rural Nebraska, Edward W. Hauswald, Center For Public Affairs Research (Cpar)

Publications

The achievement of an optimal allocation of rural lands between agricultural and nonagricultural uses requires attention to the suitability of the land for both uses. A complete study of land use would include a cataloguing and classification of those factors or conditions that make rural land suitable for agricultural and nonagricultural uses, with special attention to differentiation between the two, and an identification and classification of the rural areas suitable for rural residential development.

The principal objective of this study is to develop an index or classification scheme of those factors and conditions that determine the suitability of rural land …

The Economic Impact Of Non-Profit Arts Organizations In Nebraska, 1976-1977, Murray Frost, Garneth O. Peterson Jan 1978

The Economic Impact Of Non-Profit Arts Organizations In Nebraska, 1976-1977, Murray Frost, Garneth O. Peterson

Publications

What are the arts worth to Nebraska? Until recently no information has been available to answer that question. The arts provide an important cultural contribution, but they also support the economy by employing people, renting buildings, and purchasing supplies and services. The intangible attributes of artistic endeavors are commonly recognized. Economic contributions, however, have received little attention.

The Effectiveness Of A Family Service Center As Evaluated By The Clients Served, Sue T. Burnett

Graduate Theses

The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of a small family counseling center as evaluated by the clients themselves. A questionnaire, designed and used by the National Family Service Association of America in 1970, was utilized as the measure for evaluation. A total of 46 clients comprised the sample group representing 25% of the population receiving questionnaires. Descriptive case data were collected and analyzed on the total population and compared to the sample. Results showed a marked deficiency in the number of minority and low-income groups both in requesting services and responding to the questionnaire. Agency services …

Social Control Or Social Wage: On The Political Economy Of The "Welfare State", Paul Adams Jan 1978

Social Control Or Social Wage: On The Political Economy Of The "Welfare State", Paul Adams

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Discussion between liberal apologists for the "welfare state" and their radical critics has tended in recent years to focus on the question of "social control." In this area the corporate liberals and social democrats (the "welfare statists") are weak. They talk of the "welfare state" as if, at least in principle, it represented the collective assumption by society of responsibility for the basic needs and dependencies of its members. Insofar as "social control" is relevant for them, it has to do with society's exercise of restraint over the selfish pursuit of private profit.1 Radical critics of the "welfare state," on …

The Attraction Of Interstate Radial Freeway Corridors For New Office Sites, Murray Frost, Armin K. Ludwig

This paper discuses the impact of Interstate radial freeway corridors upon the location of new office developments in the 1970-76 period in seven United States cities. Data indicated that in each of the seven cities, greater growth occurred outside of the downtown Core than in it. Growth of the office sites compared to previous development ranged from 12% to 110% in the Cores with an average of 24%, compared to 106% to 307% for non-Core areas with an average of 207%. Growth expressed in terms of gross square feet had a similar pattern. Of the 1970-76 office development, the greatest …

The Msw And The Mpa: Confrontation Of Two Professions In Public Welfare, Thomas H. Walz, Harry J. Macy Jan 1978

The Msw And The Mpa: Confrontation Of Two Professions In Public Welfare, Thomas H. Walz, Harry J. Macy

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

From its inception in the 1930's, public welfare has emerged as a major service industry commanding a sizeable portion of the public tax dollar. Concomitant with growth and size and expenditure has come the federalization of the program. In the face of a series of changes--the growth of welfare, added administrative complexity, and the emergence of new economic function--public welfare's identification with social work was weakened. Correspondingly, and perhaps logically, its identification with public administration has been strengthened. In this paper, there is exploration of the changes leading to the confrontation between social work and public administration within public welfare. …
