The United States' Census of Population and Housing records several measures of income and wealth in order to determine the economic well-being of the nation and its citizens. Among the real measures recorded for the 1980 Census were per capita (individual) income, family income, household income, income type, poverty status, mortgage costs, housing value, and contract rent. The income and wealth figures were self-reported and, therefore, rely upon the accuracy of those disclosing …

Graying Of The Professoriate Reconsidered: The Impact Of Demographics On Criminal Justice Education, Vincent J. Webb, Timothy S. Bynum, Jack R. Greene

The demographic composition, especially the age structure of criminal justice faculty, is of interest to students in criminal justice education for a number of reasons. First, an overall assessment provides some gauge of the relative age of the faculty in the field. Second, observations of changes in the composition of the age structure over time provide insight into the aging process and attendant developmental process of the field itself. Third, age composition has a major impact on the job market for criminal justice faculty. This of course, in turn, partially determines career possibilities for neophytes in the field. It also …

Defeminizing Social Policy, David Stoesz
Defeminizing Social Policy, David Stoesz
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
Social policy initiatives by the evangelical right and neoconservative movements are reversing liberal programs that have benefited women. This represents an attempt to defeminize social policy. Essential to this transformation are theoretical interpretations of economics and sociology which, combined with religious conservatism, portend the restoration of patriarchal culture. The ideology guiding the defeminizing of social policy is so pervasive as to suggest that regaining ground lost will be exceedingly difficult for those promoting social services for women.

This study measured the immediate economic impact of the University of Nebraska at Omaha on the Omaha Standard Metropolitan Statistical Area 1 in 1980-81. It focused only on the expenditures of the university itself, its faculty and staff, students, and visitors, and the multiplicative effect resulting from the spending of those dollars within the local economy. It did not examine more long-range or indirect economic impacts-e.g., the impact of the presence of the university upon the area's …

KWRRI Research Reports
The research reported is based on a holistic sociocultural study of a popular regional recreation site in Eastern Kentucky, the Red River Gorge. Our research with over 3200 recreational visitors to the Gorge, 395 members of four recreation/conservation groups, 44 local landowners, and with a large number of management personnel from various governmental agencies permits us to provide an especially comprehensive overview of the problems and prospects of this popular area. Our general purpose is to provide descriptive and analytic information that will allow managers to more effectively understand and cope with their work in Red River Gorge.

An Australian Test Of Economic And Political Models Of Welfare State Expenditures: 1945 - 1979, Gordon W. Ternowetsky, Maurreen P. Clissold
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
This paper tests 'political' and 'economic' models of welfare expenditure with post-World War II Australian data. The major antecedents of welfare spending for the overall time period (1945-1979) appeared to be economic growth as mediated by the age of the population and program incrementalism. It was shown, however, that this view misleads rather than clarifies the influence of different factors during specific periods within the overall time series. A periodization of welfare spending was found to be more useful. The periodization analysis showed that the influence of politics on welfare spending is important. Right political strength was found to have …

A Model For Forecasting Environmental Reaction To Policy Initiation, Ram A. Cna'an
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
This research proposes and empirically tests a model for forecasting the possible reactions of other organizations to a policy initiation. This model is measuring the amount of reaction to change (A.R.C.) on three levels: relevant organizations, relevant functions, and overall environment. The model is presented in a general mode followed by a quasi-experimental case study. The results of this study are reported and implications, possible improvements and different uses are discussed.
Population Change And Crime Change, Deborah Caulfield
Population Change And Crime Change, Deborah Caulfield
Publications
The relationship existing between population change and crime rates in the central city merits study. There is limited research in this area, and the vast majority of the literature focuses on the correlation between population density and crime in the Standard Metropolitan Statistical Areas (SMSA). These few studies explore various types of crime in relation to population density, rather than the investigation of the relationship between population change and crime rates in the central city.

Data Processing And Information Management In The City Of Omaha, Nebraska: Analysis And Recommendations, Donald F. Norris
Data Processing And Information Management In The City Of Omaha, Nebraska: Analysis And Recommendations, Donald F. Norris
Publications
The city of Omaha has an extensive and complex data processing system. It is so large, in fact, that no single person inside or out of city government is fully knowledgeable about it.
The system as it exists today cannot be described as an information management system as it is neither coordinated nor comprehensive. It consists instead of numerous components that have come together over time without the benefit of an overall plan or clear policy direction. The system is rarely viewed from a citywide perspective or from the perspective of providing information required by management for operational and planning …

Black And White Perceptions Of Quality Of Life In Boston, Floyd J. Fowler Jr.
Black And White Perceptions Of Quality Of Life In Boston, Floyd J. Fowler Jr.
Center for Survey Research Publications
It is difficult, probably impossible, to compare objectively the seriousness of racial problems and tensions in Boston with those in other cities. However, there can be little doubt that there is a widespread perception that relationships between blacks and whites in Boston constitute a serious problem. Specifically, one image is that Boston is a community in which blacks are not welcome and in which they are treated with unusual hostility and abuse. Another image is that whites in Boston are unfairly maligned as racists and bigots.
In 1980, following several race-related incidents, The Boston Committee was formed. The purpose of …

Comparing Employed And Unemployed Welfare Recipients: A Discriminant Analysis, Becky L. Glass
Comparing Employed And Unemployed Welfare Recipients: A Discriminant Analysis, Becky L. Glass
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
Based on data from the 1973 Minnesota AFDC Characteristic Study, 348 female AFDC recipients were classified according to whether they were employed or unemployed. T-tests and a discriminant analysis were performed to determine which of several demographic and economic variables distinguished the employed group from the unemployed group. The best discriminators were found to be those related to economic condition, such as value of personal and real property, liquid assets, and monthly income. Little difference was found between employed and unemployed women on the demographic variables. The implications of these findings for the argument that personal motivation or individual differences …
