This project proposes the development of a Social Sciences Initiative at the undergraduate and graduate levels that will provide educational, research and service opportunities for faculty and students. These opportunities are envisioned as interdisciplinary, with a focus on community issues and priorities, and with the potential to create new links among existing educational/research units within the University. The development of a Social Sciences Initiative provides a direct link to the Mission of VCU through several of the Mission’s intents:  “activities that increase knowledge and understanding of the world and inspire and enrich teaching” The Social Sciences Initiative will expand …

This monograph reports on a study investigating the characteristics of effective state service systems. Findings are based on the experiences of individuals with disabilities who have used a state agency (Vocational Rehabilitation, Department of Mental Retardation, Department of Mental Health, or One Stop Center) to find employment. Interviews were conducted to examine individuals' experiences with employment services including job search, job entry, strategies that facilitated involvement, supports provided, and barriers experienced. Effect Of Leadership Style On Work Climate And Program Completion In Domiciliary Addiction Programs, Patricia L. Johnson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Addiction leads to homelessness, AIDS, other health problems, crimes, financial burdens, family conflict and many social and psychological problems. Relapse rates remain very high in addiction programs and employees are frustrated by the poor response of clients to treatment and to the bureaucratic style of management often found in hospitals and clinics. Relapse rates are due to stress factors, respondent conditioning processes, and lack of focus on techniques of relapse prevention. One approach to overcoming the morale problem could be a more participatory style of management to improve the work climate. This study was completed in response to the lack …

Prison Overcrowding In Nebraska: The Feasibility Of Intensive Supervision Probation, Dennis Hoffman, Vincent J. Webb Jan 1988

Prison Overcrowding In Nebraska: The Feasibility Of Intensive Supervision Probation, Dennis Hoffman, Vincent J. Webb

Center for Public Affairs Research (UNO): Publications

This chapter analyzes the magnitude and causes of Nebraska's prison overcrowding problem. Nebraska's response to this problem has been to expand prison capacity and to implement programs to decrease length of stay. Another policy option - reducing prison admissions through intensive supervision probation - is examined in this chapter. Data from Nebraska Parole Board files indicate there is a category of current prison inmates that are not sufficiently dangerous to require imprisonment. Many of these nonviolent offenders with marginal criminal histories could be diverted into intensive probation programs that are more cost·effective than incarceration.
