Learning From Each Other: Better Schools And A Brighter Future, Joe Nathan Phd Jan 1989

Learning From Each Other: Better Schools And A Brighter Future, Joe Nathan Phd

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

Recent Minnesota experience shows that it is possible to make rapid, significant improvement in our public schools. Despite the skepticism of some and opposition of others, Governor Perpich's school choice initiatives helped thousands of youngsters, while not producing the chaos opponents predicted. This paper argues that we should build on the success of recent reforms to rethink the roles of parents and students in our schools. While Minnesota has the nation's highest graduation rate and above-average test scores, additional reforms are necessary if we are to continue to make economic and social progress.

Suburban Congestion The Twin Cities Real Transportation Problem, Richard P. Braun, Amy M. Vennewitz

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

Suburban Congestion. What is it and why is it the Twin Cities' rea/transportation problem?

Webster's dictionary defines the word "congestion" as a condition of overcrowding, overburdening, or an excessive accumulation to the point of obstruction. Though the term "suburban congestion" does not have a precise definition, most persons living in urban areas today have a clear perception of what suburban congestion entails. Images of overcrowded freeway lanes, snarled intersections, endless queues of cars and bumper-to-bumper, stop and go traffic jump quickly to mind.

The Twin Cities and metropolitan areas all across the nation are reaching a "suburban congestion crisis" brought …

The State Of Black Omaha: 1989, Center For Public Affairs Research (Cpar)

Publications

Creation of an economic base is necessary for the continued growth and development of any society or community. It is of utmost importance within Black neighborhoods in our urban center because they have Jacked representative economic development. They have been depleted as a result of a "dollar drain," through which money leaves Black communities and strengthens White communities. This drain must be halted. Economic enterprise must be created in Black communities, such as employment opportunities for the unemployed and underemployed to foster family stabilization, and neighborhood beautification projects that can provide jobs and an improved environment.

Nebraskans And Educational Pluralism, Helen A. Moore Jan 1989

Nebraskans And Educational Pluralism, Helen A. Moore

Center for Public Affairs Research (UNO): Publications

Equality of educational opportunity continues to be a goal of public education and of the communities served. To meet the diverse needs of racial and ethnic minorities and female students, policy makers must untangle layers of government guidelines, while attending to the goals of local constituents.

The under-representation of minorities among public school graduates, and gender and race inequality in school teaching and administrative staffs, are discussed in this chapter. Community attitudes toward pluralistic goals and integration in education are highlighted, and suggestions are made for coordinating the diverse needs of all students.

S.T.A.R.T. Economic Development Action Step Packet - Community Image And Marketing, Center For Public Affairs Research (Cpar)

Publications

Lack of a clear community image, or the presence of a negative or ambivalent image, may emerge during your S.T.A.R.T. Economic Development strategic planning sessions as a reason for economic difficulties. Image problems are often perceived as a major cause of declining sales, conflicts, residents shopping elsewhere, and young people leaving. Although a negative image may be only part of the reason for (or a product of) economic decline, it usually has some influence on the community economy. Image is manifest in feelings of pride or embarrassment about the community-its streets, houses, lawns, city buildings, and businesses. A lack of …
