The Notion Of Place In The Construction Of History, Nostalgia And Heritage In Singapore, Brenda S. A. Yeoh, Lily Kong Jun 1996

The Notion Of Place In The Construction Of History, Nostalgia And Heritage In Singapore, Brenda S. A. Yeoh, Lily Kong

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

In this paper, we investigate the links between place and time, and the intersections between the geographical imagination and the historical mind. These issues are explored in the context of Singapore by looking at the links between place and three concepts usually associated with the temporal sense - history, nostalgia and heritage. We argue that the two imaginations can be simultaneously engaged by means of a focus on the concept of place. The making of a place is closely intertwined with individual biographies and collective histories; at the same time, place does not record history in an unproblematic way. We …

Purchase Of Service Contracting Versus Government Service Delivery: The Views Of State Human Service Administrators, Peter M. Kettner, Lawrence L. Martin Jun 1996

Purchase Of Service Contracting Versus Government Service Delivery: The Views Of State Human Service Administrators, Peter M. Kettner, Lawrence L. Martin

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Purchase of service contracting (POSC) as a mode of human service delivery is based largely on untested normative grounds. This article presents the results of a national study comparing the views of state human service administrators on the relative merits of POSC versus government service delivery in four issue areas: (1) service costs, (2) service quality, (3) bureaucracy and red tape, and (4) effect on government employees. The study results provide some support for POSC in three of the four issues areas. The study finds that geography plays no role in the views of state human service administrators, but that …

Integrating Indian Health Programs Into Medicaid Managed Care Systems, Part 2, Sara J. Rosenbaum, Ann Zuvekas

Center for Health Policy Research

The Indian Health Service (IHS), recognizing that state Medicaid programs are rapidly purchasing managed care plans for their beneficiaries and that managed care enrollment has significant implications for both Indians and Indian health facilities, convened this Roundtable to discuss options for participation in such care. The purpose of this roundtable was to identify options to increase Medicaid managed care participation by Indian health programs. These include programs operated directly by IHS, programs operated by tribes under the Indian Self-Determination Act, and urban Indian programs under Title V of the Indian Health Care Improvement Act.By design, Roundtable participants were a group …

Family Structure And Institutionalization: Results From Merged Data, James Mcnally, Douglas Wolf Jan 1996

Family Structure And Institutionalization: Results From Merged Data, James Mcnally, Douglas Wolf

Center for Policy Research

Research on the patterns and behavioral consequences of kin networks among the older population is limited due to the shortcomings of most available survey data. Often, household surveys obtain little information on the number and characteristics of nonresident kin. Moreover, surveys are often confined to the noninstitutionalized population. One possible solution is to merge information from multiple sources, in order to achieve the requisite coverage of populations and data content. This paper reports on the development of a hybrid data base containing observations from the 1987-88 National Survey of Families and Households (NSFH) and the 1989 National Long-Term Care Survey …

Journal Of The Community Development Society Vol. 27, No. 02, Center For Public Affairs Research (Cpar)

Publications

Good Bye. This editor's note completes my five years as the editor of the Journal of the Community Development Society. It has been a fast and a very important five years. Like most things in this dramatically changing world, in those five years the practice of community development has changed. Likewise the Community Development Society has changed, and I think so has its Journal. Two of these changes are worth noting. First, while still retaining its social science character, the Journal has published articles with broader research questions. In other words, the goals of the articles have changed. While many …

Guidelines For A Short Course On Egyptian Marine Officers' Responsibilities For The Marine Environment, Mohammed Alaa Kamel Farag Dec 1995

Guidelines For A Short Course On Egyptian Marine Officers' Responsibilities For The Marine Environment, Mohammed Alaa Kamel Farag

World Maritime University Dissertations

Egypt has a strategic geographical location straddling both the Mediterranean and the Red Seas that constitute two of the major enclosed coastal seas in the world. Egyptian coasts have a total length of about 1630 Ian in the Mediterranean and Red Seas. A large part of the coastal areas in Egypt is contaminated with oil from various sources. Shipping activity contributes significantly to the current situation regarding oil pollution of the country's territorial waters. The reasons for oil pollution in Egyptian waters are many, and Egyptian marine officers play a significant role in contributing to the pollution of the marine …

Integrated Management Strategy For The Coastal Development Program Of Jiangsu Province, Meifeng Luo Dec 1995

Integrated Management Strategy For The Coastal Development Program Of Jiangsu Province, Meifeng Luo

World Maritime University Dissertations

The development in the coastal area of Jiangsu Province is still managed on a sectoral basis. This low level management method causes huge wastes of natural resources, fosters intense competition between different sectors for limited natural resources and space, and results in conflicts between different interests groups, over exploitation and even depletion of natural resources, environmental pollution and ecosystem degradation. With the development of the national economy, the coastal development activities will be greater in number and broader in scope. There will be more conflicts between different sectors, between exploitation and resources conservation, between development and environment protection. Thus, to …
