Planning Your Career A Workshop Series For Women, Carole Davis Jan 1981

Planning Your Career A Workshop Series For Women, Carole Davis

Publications

Your questions regarding career choice are no doubt directed toward the choice of a paid occupation. However, a career is more than a way to earn a living. A career is a Way of Living. You are, in fact, already well into your career and have been involved in the career development process since you were very young. Whether you realize it or not, you have already assumed a number of work roles-student, homemaker, babysitter, office worker, volunteer, just to name a few. Although you have undoubtedly made some conscious and independent decisions about your career, many of your decisions, …

A Guide To Revenue Administration For Small Cities, Institute Of Urban Studies Jan 1981

A Guide To Revenue Administration For Small Cities, Institute Of Urban Studies

Institute of Urban Studies Publications - Archive

Commencing with California's passage of Proposition 13, cities and towns throughout the nation have been compelled to re-examine their reliance on traditional revenue sources. Whether or not there has in fact been a universal "taxpayer revolt", the economic conditions of the past few years have caused both city officials and the public at large to seek relief from the increasing burden of the property tax. Believing that an analysis of other municipal revenue sources, whether existing or potential, might benefit Texas cities and towns, the Institute of Urban Studies obtained a grant under Title I of the Higher Education Act …

Publications

This issue of Review of Applied Urban Research features "Human Services Utilization by Older Hispanics in Nebraska," by David R. DiMartino.

Older Americans make up an increasingly significant part of the total United States population.1 Older citizens comprised about 11 percent of the national population, and numbered approximately 24 million in 1978.2 More importantly, older Americans have increased as a proportion of the total population and have increased in number by 23 percent between 1970 and 1980.3 In Nebraska, an estimated 13 percent of the population are "elderly," and only a few other states, mostly in the …

Caur Annual Report: 1980-81, Center For Public Affairs Research (Cpar)

Publications

The Center for Applied Urban Research continued to fulfill its mission of applied research, community service and training during 1980-81. Two major events that took place during the past year have greatly strengthened the ability of CAUR to carry out this mission. In October, CAUR moved into new quarters at the Peter Kiewit Conference Center at 1313 Farnam on the Mall in downtown Omaha. With just over 7,000 square feet of space, CAUR has been able to carry out project activity in a more efficient manner. More importantly, the downtown location of CAUR has provided an expanded clientele with greater …

The original report on which this article is based resulted from research conducted by CAUR for the Nebraska Mexican American Commission with funding from the Nebraska Commission on Aging. Dr. DiMartino and Carole M. Davis were co-investigators for the project and co-authored the lengthier report. The cooperation and assistance provided by so many members of the Hispanic communities in Lincoln, Omaha, and Scottsbluff made the study possible.

The Politics Of Repression: Argentina, 1976-79, Nattasin Chongsanguan Jan 1981

The Politics Of Repression: Argentina, 1976-79, Nattasin Chongsanguan

Masters Theses

Argentina in 1976 was a place of unusual paradox. The government with more than 60% of the popular vote seemed to have crumbled to the ground with almost no backing from those who had put it into office. Its downfall was due to its inability to resolve the "national crisis" facing the nation.

On 24 March 1976, the military finally intervened via a coup d'etat. Under the new regime, violations of human rights have been reported and protests have been made by leading human rights movements. The military junta argues that its policies and course of actions are necessary for …

Policy Alternatives In Soviet Environmental Protection., Charles E. Ziegler Jan 1981

Policy Alternatives In Soviet Environmental Protection., Charles E. Ziegler

Faculty and Staff Scholarship

A number of developments over the past decade or so illustrate the increasing salience of environmental problems for Soviet policy makers. In the mid-1960s, controversy over the potential pollution of Lake Baikal appears to have stimulated and legitimized environmental protection as an issue for discussion in the Soviet press. The output of scholarly books and articles by philosophers, economists, biologists, physicists, and sociologists reflects the broad range of organizations concerned with these questions. Support is also evident in high places-Brezhnev's report to the 25th Party Congress in 1976 emphasized the importance of environmental protection and announced that 11 billion rubles …

Multiple Constituencies, Differential Power, And The Question Of Effectiveness In Human Service Organizations, Patricia Yancey Martin Nov 1980

Multiple Constituencies, Differential Power, And The Question Of Effectiveness In Human Service Organizations, Patricia Yancey Martin

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

A multiple constituencies model of human service organizations identifies twelve interest groups which must be considered when effectiveness questions are raised. The differential power of the interest groups suggests that some groups' preferences are likely to be emphasized over others. The relationship between power inside the organization and that on the outside is analyzed. Recent trends in the growth andmiiitancy of professional associations and employee groups suggest that internal control by senior administrators is increasingly challenged and variable. Future studies of effectiveness in the human services are encouraged to remain sensitive to the effects of constituency interests and power on …

Ratepayer Financing Of Solar Thermal Electric Commercial Demonstration Projects, Mark D. Jarmie, Jeff V. Conopask Oct 1980

Ratepayer Financing Of Solar Thermal Electric Commercial Demonstration Projects, Mark D. Jarmie, Jeff V. Conopask

UMR-MEC Conference on Energy / UMR-DNR Conference on Energy

Commercialization of a new energy supply technology requires demonstration of its feasibility to potential customers at each staqe of development. While small improvements of proven energy supply svstems are usually privately pioneered, larger or more uniaue research projects are often delaved as economic and technical concerns are assuaged through public sector R&D funding. For solar thermal central receivers, even though their technical viability has been tested on a small scale, acceptance by utilities will require full-scale field experiments and commercial-sized demonstration plants.

Entropy Based Analytic Techniques, John O. Dow Oct 1980

Entropy Based Analytic Techniques, John O. Dow

UMR-MEC Conference on Energy / UMR-DNR Conference on Energy

The study of energy supply futures is simplified when the end use of this energy is included in the analyses. The various supply and end use opportunities can be evaluated against a standard basis with the analytic techniques discussed here. A simplified theoretical background for these techniques is given and a wide range of energy supply and end use situations to which the techniques apply is presented.

Double Envelope House Design, Construction And Operation, James A. Ray Oct 1980

Double Envelope House Design, Construction And Operation, James A. Ray

UMR-MEC Conference on Energy / UMR-DNR Conference on Energy

The double envelope concept of house construction has received recent interest due to claims of performance not backed by analytical or operational data along with questions in code compliance and building costs associated with the construction. This paper provides a compilation of information from around the country including problems and successes and initial review of technical data associated with instrumented projects. Specific information from the Midwest is based on three houses in the St. Louis area which include designs for passive cooling and heating with alternative energy sources for backup.

The Gloom Gets Doomier, David A. Summers Oct 1980

The Gloom Gets Doomier, David A. Summers

UMR-MEC Conference on Energy / UMR-DNR Conference on Energy

This paper reviews the likely sources of energy in the year 1990. Economic conditions, difficult to forecast, affect short-term consumption, while technological breakthroughs, equally impossible to predict, will control long-term production of energy. For the ten-year period, however, commitments to construction, or feasibility studies, must already be in hand. This allows a prediction of the energy supply for that year, and such a prediction is made. Because this indicates that only about 1 percent growth in supply can occur over this time period, against a requirement for at least 2 percent, the forecast is doomier than it was in earlier …

The Economics Of Metals Recovery From Power Plant Fly Ash Via The Ames Hichlor Process, S. J. Weiss, G. Burnet, C. Y. Chang Oct 1980

The Economics Of Metals Recovery From Power Plant Fly Ash Via The Ames Hichlor Process, S. J. Weiss, G. Burnet, C. Y. Chang

UMR-MEC Conference on Energy / UMR-DNR Conference on Energy

The disposal of potentially hazardous coal wastes is becoming a significant problem for the payer industry. The Ames HiChlor process, which utilizes paver plant fly ash as a source of aluminun, is proposed as a method of coal waste utilization. In the HiChlor process fly ash is chlorinated in the presence of a carbonaceous reduct ant at 700 to 900°C to produce alumnum chloride and titaniun tetrachloride as salable products. An economic analysis for a plant vhich would process 6,000 tons per day of fly ash is presented. Conditions under which the proposed process will prove profitable are discussed.
