The Social Cost Of Ponzi Schemes On Secondary Victims In Nigeria, Ojeifoh Okosun
The Social Cost Of Ponzi Schemes On Secondary Victims In Nigeria, Ojeifoh Okosun
Dissertations (2016-Present)
Ponzi schemes, fraudulent investment operations that pay returns to earlier investors using funds from new investors, have become a growing concern in Nigeria, particularly since the 2016 economic recession. The proliferation of these schemes has caused billions of dollars in financial losses, plunging millions into economic hardship. While research has extensively documented the effects on primary victims—those who directly invest and lose money—the impact on secondary victims, including family members, dependents, and close associates, remains largely unexamined. This study seeks to bridge that gap by investigating the financial, social, and psychological consequences of Ponzi schemes on secondary victims in Nigeria, …
Amidst The Frenzy Over Deepseek Ai, Us Federal Science And Tech Policy Is A Mess Of Internal Contradictions, Yujia He
Patterson School of Diplomacy and International Commerce Faculty Publications
The release of the R1 model by the Chinese artificial intelligence (AI) company, DeepSeek, shocked the US tech industry. Yujia He writes that while DeepSeek’s model may not be quite as superior compared to its competitors as originally thought, the Trump administration has responded to its innovations by further pushing for US leadership in AI. Taking a close look at US research and development policy under the second Trump administration, however, shows the significant disconnect between rhetoric and policy. Federal funding freezes and reduced funding for the National Science Foundation could have dire long-term consequences for research and international cooperation …

Island Platforms And The Hyper-Terrestrialisation Of Singapore's Smart City-State, Orlando Woods, Tim Bunnell, Lily Kong
Research Collection College of Integrative Studies
This paper foregrounds the importance of underlying territorial formations in realising a vision of the smart city. It argues that as a political technology of the state, territory should be understood as a platform upon which data works and the smart city unfolds. In this view, island territories – of which bordered city-states like Singapore provide paradigmatic examples – provide an integral, yet hitherto unexplored, component in the realisation of urban “smartness”. We illustrate these theoretical arguments through an analysis of how the territorial constraints that characterise Singapore’s island platform enable the state to accurately and effectively realise its vision …

Irrigation And Society In The Upper Río Grande Basin, U.S.A: A Heritage Of Mutualism, José A. Rivera Ph.D
Faculty Publications
The acequias of the upper Río Grande are more than just irrigation canals. They also allocate and manage water for the community of landowners in the system. After four centuries of use, the acequias persist into modern times with their founding principles intact: self-government, local autonomy, internal rules for operating procedures, and a strong sense of mutualismo or communal responsibility. They have endured since Spanish colonial settlement and have maintained continuity of a water culture surviving political-administrative changes under three sovereigns, Spain (1598-1821), Mexico (1821-1848), and the United States (1848-Present). Despite stressors of climate variability, demographic changes, urbanization, and economic …

The U.S. Grand Strategy Toward The Pacific Islands, Angela Vasovic
The U.S. Grand Strategy Toward The Pacific Islands, Angela Vasovic
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
The United States has recently placed its relations with the Pacific Islands, fourteen small states far out in the Pacific Ocean, on its high-priority diplomatic agenda. Although it has been interacting with the islands since the 1800s and had heavily relied on their cooperation during World War II, the importance of the islands waned in the eyes of the United States in the late twentieth and the beginning of the twenty first century as the country turned its attention to other regions of the world. However, in recent years, the U.S. has recognized the need to strengthen relations with the …

Called the Super School Project, the winning ten teams each received $10 million. While XQ claims that the best ideas about high school reform come from communities and student voice, they also have funded selective ideas about “innovation,” including computer-based personalized learning. The organization’s efforts have grown in …

Data And Digitalization In Energy Efficiency Policy Design: The Case Of Singapore, Ishani Mukherjee, Diandrea Ho
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
Overarching and broad policy goals for enhancing energy efficiency have existed globally over the last 50 years as a response to rising energy demands, heightening costs, and construction levels of residential and commercial buildings, and the associated rises in greenhouse gas emissions from energy use (Levine et al., 2007; World Bank, 2010). Buildings, in particular, have been widely recognized as offering the greatest potential for reducing energy use and related greenhouse gas emissions, followed by reduced energy consumption in manufacturing, appliances, electronic goods, and end-users of electricity (Levine, 2007; IEA, 2010). And while significant technological strides have been made globally …

Determinants Of Physicians' Brain Drain In Egypt, Mennatallah Elbeheiry
Theses and Dissertations
Egypt is enduring a significant shortage of physicians, despite the annual graduation of approximately 10,000 medical students from its 27 medical schools. In 2016, the physician density was alarmingly low, with only one doctor per 12,285 people. This shortage is exacerbated by a physicians’ brain drain, as Egypt is a leading exporter of physicians to countries like the United Kingdom and Australia. As of 2020, the Egyptian Medical Syndicate reported 212,835 registered physicians, yet 56 percent of them work abroad, and only about 62,000 are actively employed in public hospitals, serving a population of over 110 million. The government’s efforts …

The research focuses on the socio-spatial qualities such as accessibility to services and facilities, community interaction, and vast green areas between buildings for privacy, all of …
The Future Of Stealth Military Doctrine, Theodoros G. Kostis
The Future Of Stealth Military Doctrine, Theodoros G. Kostis
Joint Force Quarterly
This article explores the future of stealth military doctrine and argues that conventional stealth, centered on reducing radar cross-section and other detectable signatures, faces growing limitations against advanced integrated air defense systems. The author proposes shifting from a model based primarily on high speed and low observability toward one that emphasizes surprise through obfuscation. Central to this approach is the stand-in variable speed multiple-domain (SiVSMD) offensive concept, which combines artificial intelligence, autonomous unmanned systems, swarm tactics, miniaturization, electronic warfare, cyber capabilities, deception, and mosaic warfare. Small, distributed platforms would operate across land, sea, undersea, and air domains, varying their speed …
