Reading, a complex psycho-physiological, thought-provoking process if concerned with the communication of ideas from writer to reader (16). In reading, one is not having first-hand experience with human events. Rather, he is having vicarious experiences by interpreting the written record of another person’s experience. Many skills and abilities; i.e., word recognition, drawing of inferences, the organization of ideas, comprehension of meaning, and a host of others, are involved in the reading process. However, reading does not involve these skills individually. They operate together in meaningful situations to serve one’s purpose.

The purpose of this study was to examine the extent to which certain specific factors are associated with adjustment of a class of sixth grade students. It would be of interest to explore, in greater detail, further possible differences between these two groups, the "high orange" and "low orange." Accordingly, the purpose of this study was to seek possible differences between the two groups with respect to certain more specific personality variables. The importance of such a study, in addition to shedding light upon the characteristics of groups separated by means of the color association test, is also seen in the fact that it might provide information bearing upon the understanding, prediction and control of behavior-problem cases.

The present study is an attempt to obtain a measure empathic ability, and to investigate its relationship to an instrument of personality measurement, the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory. The problem of the thesis was as follows: On a selected group of children, to what extent are differences between scores of verbal and performance intelligence tests useful as group and individual measures of adjustment? Adjustment was measured by A Test of Personality Adjustment by Carl Rogers. Verbal and performance intelligence were measured by the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children. Differences between scores of verbal and performance tests were measured by a specified criterion, disparity. The problem, findings, and interpretations were limited to these criteria.

Within the past decade the field of clinical psychology has become increasingly concerned with projective tests as a means of facilitating the understanding of the dynamic makeup of the individual personality. The enthusiasm over these techniques has resulted in the development of a barrage of projective techniques, purporting to uncover dynamics and "complexes" to a sometimes fantastic and often dubious extent. The subjective nature of these tests appears to render them most difficult to quantify and validate experimentally.
