An Investigation Of The Influence Of Varying Lengths Of Rest Following Differential Amounts Of Practice On The Practice Effect In Tachistoscopic Word Recognition, John G. Platt

An experiment was carried out to investigate the influence of varying rest periods after three different amounts of practice on the practice effect in word recognition.

Analysis of the data revealed: (1) rest resulted in a sharp increment in recognition thresholds except at short rest intervals after a brief practice period, (2) the threshold scores immediately after rest were found to be an inverse function of the length of the rest period, and (3) larger threshold increments were observed following greater amounts of practice than after lesser amounts.

One branch of aggression research has concentrated on the elicitation of aggressive behavior by means of exteroceptive stimulation. Electric shock or similar painful stimuli (Ulrich & Azrin, 1962) are well known to produce fighting in the laboratory rat. This basic method has allowed experimental analysis of a wide scope of associated variables.

Ulrich and Azrin (1962) investigated several different parameters. They found that laboratory rats increased their fighting behavior as the frequency of shocks increased from 0.1 to 38 shocks per minute. With frequency fixed, the fighting response rate resembled an inverted U-shaped curve when shock intensity was increased from …

Introduction

The study of the determinants of alcoholism, one of the most perplexing diseases of mankind, entered its most fruitful era of discovery in the laboratory of the animal researcher. A pioneering study of the determinants of alcohol consumption by Richter (1940) indicated that laboratory rats show a preference for alcohol over water beginning at 1.8 per cent ethanol (v/v) solution, and continue to prefer alcohol over water up to a 6 per cent ethanol (v/v) solution. Richter made two important contributions to alcohol research which had broader implications than the presentation of an index of alcohol consumption in rats. …

The main purpose of this study is to determine the effects of the race of an examiner upon hostility indicated through drawings of a person made by culturally deprived Negro children. Spontaneous drawings by children have been long suspected of holding a key to the psychology of child development. The history of psychological research on children's drawings has been reviewed by Harris (1963). He found that as early as 1885 Ebenezer Cooke published an article on children's drawings in which he described the successive stages of development as he observed them. Many recent studies of the effects of past-experience variables on perception have organized in the effort to provide tests of the enrichment and differentiation accounts of these effects. The enrichment position. Usually stated in terms of acquired distinctiveness of cues (Goss, 1955; Miller and Dollard, 1941), holds that learning a distinctive responses to a stimulus will result in the addition to that stimulus of a distinctive response-produced cue. In turn, the newly “enriched” stimulus is less similar to related stimuli than before such learning occurred. This study investigated the variables measured by the verification scale of the Kuder Preference Record-Voca tiona l and the falsification scale of the GuilfordZimmerman Temperament Survey. Responses of an experimental group of Protestant seminary students were compared with those of a control group of general psychology students. These groups were shown to be different in self-perceived values and attitudes, as defined by results on the Allport Vernon Lindzey Study of Values and the Guilford-Zimmerman Temperament Survey, with the experimental group presenting the more altruistic outlook. Do we learn to reason logically just as we learn grammar or estimating distances? Philosophers usually say we do and have taught logic as a discipline for thousands of years. They are generally not content to teach "about" logic, or in the history of it; they generally state their intent is to teach "logic for everyday thinking".
