An Investigation Of High And Low Self-Disclosers' Scores On The Holtzman Inkblot Technique, Richard L. Atkins

The purpose of this study was to see if there are any differences in how high and low self-disclosers score on the Holtzman Inkblot Technique. The study employed a causal-comparative design for descriptive purposes.

Two hundred four college students were given a self-disclosure inventory, and high and low self-disclosers were randomly selected from the highest and lowest interquartile ranges. The fifty subjects were administered the group version of the Holtzman Inkblot Technique.

The results indicated that female high self-disclosers scored significantly higher on Barrier and significantly lower on Hostility than female low self-disclosers.

Separation of commitment as a distinct variable allows specific inferences to be made about its function in the attitude change process.

Experimenter-Supplied Versus Subject-Originated Descriptive Sentence And Mediation Mnemonics In A Modified Paied-Associate Learning Task, Jospeh Albert Garten

The purpose of the present experiment was to compare the effectiveness of E-supplied and S-originated descriptive sentence and mediation mnemonics to a simple repetition con- dition in a modified paired-associate learning task. The S-originated devices were significantly superior to the E­ supplied aids at the 2-day and 1-week retention intervals. All mnemonic conditions produced significantly higher retention than the mediation E-supplied and SR conditions at the 8-week level.

There were no differences in recall between the two S-originated or between the-E-supplied conditions at the 2-day and 1-week intervals. It was concluded that the source of the mnemonic was the crucial …

Prior exposure to difficult motor conflicts has been shown to impede later performance in resolving easier conflicts. To determine if similar negative transfer occurred with verbal conflicts, 80 undergraduates resolved conflicts formed by pairig seven personal characteristic adjectives. Additional transfer effects associated with moving from easier to more difficult conflicts were also examied. Using a conflict resolution board, one group of Ss resolved 10 double approach-avoidance (DAP-AV} conflicts followed by 10 approach-approach (AP-AP} conflicts, and another group transferred from AP-AP to DAP-AV. The purpose of this exploratory study was to determine if relaxation instruction and electromyographic (E.M.G.) feedback would reduce chronic low back pain. A secondary aim was to determine if the locus of control variable as defined by Rotter would influence the results obtained.

Fourteen non-hospitalized subjects with chronic low back pain, meeting the criteria of this study became the sample group. The purpose of this study was to determine the physiological responses of subjects to an initial psychological interview, and to study the effect of physical proximity and touch on these responses. Heart rate and total skin conductance variability were the responses monitored. To assess the subjects' like or dislike of the psychologist interviewer, a measure of interpersonal attraction, the Interpersonal Judgment Scale, was employed. The California Psychological Inventory was utilized to investigate possible personality correlates with the physiological responses.

This study evaluated the use of a token, operant conditioning technique as a treatment procedure in a group setting with chronic, hospitalized, psychiatric patients. Fifteen patients were randomly assigned to two experimental groups and to one control group; each group included five patients. The two experimental groups received tokens during phases of contingent reinforcement for "Therapeutic Responses" and under a yoked-control phase of non-contingent token reinforcement; the sequence of these phases was the major difference between the two experimental groups. The control group met under conditions of no tokens, and the frequency of "Therapeutic Responses" was recorded on those subjects. …

The primary purpose of this study was to compare the relative effectiveness of two group counseling methods, a self-directed behavior change group and an experiential growth group, for increasing inner-directedness as measured by Shostrom's Personal Orientation Inventory, in college students who were differentiated, on the basis of a pre-treatment measure of inner-directedness, into internals and externals. A second goal was to compare the overall outcome of each method with a no-treatment control group.

The purpose of this study is to demonstrate the effects of awareness on experimentally induced anxiety. Forty college undergraduates were conditioned with a mild electric shock as the UCS (unconditioned stimulus) and a tone a s the CS (conditioned stimulus). After conditioning, the experimental group was taught to discriminate between the CS and six other tones which were both higher and lower in frequency than the CS. The control group was not given these learning trials. Local surveys were conducted to determine environmental and recreational needs for Cache Valley and twenty interviews were held with local corporate managers. This study investigated the value of participation in a Dreikurs Parent Training group and in a Combination Dreikurs and Parent Effectiveness Training group. The value of participation was measured in terms of three variables: (1) problem behaviors of the child as reported by the parents on a Checklist of Child Problem Behaviors; (2) problems of parents as reported by the parents, themselves, on a Checklist of Parent Problems; and (3) parental attitudes as measured by Hereford's Parent Attitude Survey.

Rats given L-Ascorbic Acid in their drinking water prior to and during starvation did not develop severe ulceration in the glandular portion of their stomachs. Control rats which were either nontreated or given deactivated L-Ascorbic Acid developed severe stomach pathology on the starvation regimen.

The present study was based on the finding that food deprivation results in severe rumenal ulceration in rats. Given that L-AA is essential in maintaining tissue integrity and that ulcers are examples of tissue degeneration, the L-AA in large amounts could retard, or prevent, the formation of starvation induced stomach ulcers in rats.

Members of adult Sunday School classes from seven churches in Bowling Green, Kentucky, were administered Rotter's Internal-External Locus of Control Scale. The seven churches were also ranked by ministers on a continuum of doctrinal closedness-openness. The hypothesis stated that there would be a difference among churches according to mean internal-external control scores. It was also hypothesized that the members of the more doctrinally closed churches would tend to score as more externally controlled. Twenty-eight female, water deprived rats were given 5 minutes access to sucrose for either 1,7,14, or 21 days. They were then given LiC1 injections every third day until an aversion to the sucrose developed. The results indicated that as amount of pre-exposure to sucrose increased, the number of illnesses required to develop an aversion increased. Also, the rate of extinction of the conditioned aversion was inversely related to the number of exposures required. to establish the aversion.

This study was designed to investigate the effects of class, sex, and ethnic group membership upon delay of gratification as well as the acquisition of delay of gratification behavior through modeling and role playing.

In Phase One of the study, Mischel’s Delay-of-Reward Questionnaire was given to 443 fourth and fifth grade children. Results indicated that girls were significantly more willing to delay gratification than boys, middle class children were significantly more willing to delay gratification than lower class children, and Spanish-American children were significantly more willing to delay gratification than Anglo children. Pigeons were trained to keypeck for food delivered according to a response-dependent random-interval schedule. Then, in each of three experiments, a control group and an experimental group received multiple schedule successive discrimination training followed by generalization testing in extinction. During discrimination training two component schedules, each associated with a distinctive stimulus projected on the response key, alternated within each session. The component schedules were random-interval reinforcement and extinction for control groups, while one component schedule for experimental groups was random-time food delivery. Current paired-associate (PA) research has questioned the traditional role of imagery in young children's memory representations. In the present study it was hypothesized that the developmental trend of PA findings reflects an artifact of the procedure, i.e., decoding, rather than the actual memory representation employed by the child.
