This field study addressed the problem of "actively seeking" out and identifying children (ages 3 to 5 years) likely to develop late learning problems upon school enrollment. The procedures developed and reported in this paper deal with initial public relations, facilities, personnel, an evaluation instrument Developmental Indicators for the Assessment of Learning (DIAL), hearing and vision testing, and reporting of results to parents and school personnel.

Twenty four delinquents from Coles County, Ill. and twenty four non-delinquents were given the Social History Questionnaire (Best and Ericksen, 1973). The two groups were matched on age, sex, and self-reported social status. An item analysis was performed and the questions which differentiated between the delinquents and the nondelinquents were identified. A delinquency subscale was then developed from the 54 significant questions.

Twelve male albino rats were divided into three groups that were exposed to a DRL-18 second schedule of reinforcement. Each group was maintained at 70%, 80%, and 90% ad lib weight respectively during 28 days of acqusition training. The 70% ad lib weight group demonstrated continued superior performance over the other two groups after the 10th day. The 80% and 90% groups evidenced little difference between each other until the 20th day when the 80% group showed slightly better performance. However, in the course of studying suicide case histories, some demographic variables seem to repeat themselves as differentiating potential suicides from persons who will never attempt or commit suicide. The purpose of this paper is to determine which social history variables correlate significantly with subjects who have made a definite suicide attempt or gesture.

Three experiments were designed to detect the presence of extrasensory perception (ESP), but no such evidence was found. The results of two surveys (N=788) showed that a large majority of undergraduates (80%) believed that ESP exists, and approximately one-third believed that they had experienced ESP-related phenomena. Belief in ESP was positively and significantly related to Rotter's Internal-External Locus-of-Control scale. In addition, belief in ESP was inversely related to scores on a test of syllogistic reasoning. (This findings were presented at the eighty-third annual convention of the American Psychological Association, August 1975, Chicago, IL.)

Previous research indicated that a past history of reinforcement affects perception, but conflicting data were found concerning the effect of punishment. These experiments were testing the theory of signal detection, which holds that a past history of reinforcement when linked with a signal makes perception of that signal more likely in the future. Eighty eight students from introductory psychology classes at the University of Richmond participated. Subjects looked at inkblots and made responses on a human operant apparatus. This study examines the moral judgment levels (as measured by Kohlberg’s 6-stage moral judgment interview) for two Kenyan samples. The first sample includes a culturally and racially group of 35 young men and 17 women studying at the University of Nairobi, while the second sample consists of 44 males and 14 females living in seven communities in the Central and Western Provinces of Kenya who were interviewed by a cadre of trained University students on their school vacation. A study which investigated the relationships between the onset, frequency and severity of past and present illnesses, with life changes and coping mechanisms was carried out. Subjects consisted of three levels of health care: (1) symptom-free (N=88); (2) minor illness (N=72), and (3) hospital patients (N=100). Three measures were employed to test these relationships: (1) the Schedule of Recent Experience (SRE); (2) the Medical History Check-List (MHCL) and, (3) the Boston University Personality Inventory (BUPI). In addition, Seriousness of Illness Rating Scale (SIRS) mean values or severity weights were assigned to subjects’ physician diagnosed illnesses.

Subliminal perception is defined as a process whereby a subject reports no awareness of a visual stimulus, and yet his/her verbal behavior, subjectively experienced as “guesses”, is influenced by the stimulation. Various studies have found evidence for and against subliminal perception using discrimination tasks and subjective judgments. Explanations of subliminal perception include the partial cue hypothesis, the theory of perception of structural differences, and the theory that responses to subliminal stimuli are of a semantic nature.

Walster, Walster, Piliavin and Schmidt's (1973) finding that a selectively hard-to-get female was preferred over either an easy-to-get or a hard-to-get female was replicated for unfrustrated males. However, when males were mildly frustrated, they preferred females who had indicated attraction toward them. The implications of these results were discussed in terms of external rewards and the motivational state of individuals.

Personality, uses of personality tests, and problems associated with reliability of personality tests are briefly discussed. The Kroger and Turnbull (1975) study dealing with "role-faking" is discussed. The review of the literature discusses the occupation of policeman under three categories: 1) assessment of policemen, 2) MMPI and police assessment, and 3) MMPI studies. The MMPI was given to 18 policemen, 43 male college students, and 40 female college students. The students were assigned to a control condition and an experimental condition. The influence of methylphenidate hydrochloride injections on six male Charles River rats displaying schedule induced polydipsia was examined in this study. Bar pressing, licking, and water consumption were measured during a total of 63 daily one hour trials conducted with a variable interval 60-second schedule of bar pressing for pellets with water constantly available. The polydipsic response was acquired by subjects during the first 28 trials. Subjects were then divided into experimental and control groups. The experimental subjects recieved a 1 mg/kg injection of methylphenidate prior to regular trials 29-49 and extinction trials 50-63. Control subjects were injected with a …

An Exploration Of The Relationship Between Loneliness And Differential Diagnosis In A Rural Mental Health Center, Kathryn Dunscomb

The review of the literature discussed loneliness in general and specified three seperate forms of loneliness; social, psychic, and existential. The relationships between loneliness, social interaction, and pathology were discussed. 139 clients were given the Belcher Extended Loneliness Scale - Revised prior to therapy. They were assigned one of six diagnostic categories to determine loneliness score (LS), diagnostic, and sex interactions. An analysis of variance found a significant difference (p <.0001) between the diagnostic categories’ LS. The schizophrenic’s and the neurotic’s LS s were significantly higher (<.05) than the remaining categories. The males had significantly (p <.036) higher LS than the females. It was also hypothesized that the degree of loneliness would increase the lower the diagnostic developmental level. The hypothesized order was not consistent with the results. Further research was recommended.

This study investigated the relative effectiveness of (1) modeling, (2) modeling plus behavior rehearsal, and (3) modeling, behavior rehearsal,_ and videotaped feedback in assertive training.. Twelve psychiatric outpatients were randomly assigned to three treatment groups, ,each of which received 5 hours of training. Four additional subjects served as a waiting .list control group.

The dependent measures used were the Assertive Behavior Situation Test (ABST), a behavioral role-play test, and two additional paper and pencil measures (Constriction Scale and Fear of Negative Evaluation). Each of these measures was administered at pre- and post-test sessions.
