The Effects Of Scopollamine Upon Behavior In A Reversal Situation, Theodore Alan Glance

A group of 20 female albino rats was trained to turn either left or right opposite their natural pre-potent responses for food reinforcement under the influence of saline or scopolamine in a T-maze. Upon reaching criterion of nine out of ten correct choices, the rats were then required to make a reversal to the opposite arm of the T-maze used in training. The applicability of various theories on the cholinergic mechanisms involved in the learning processes was investigated. The results indicate the occurrence of a state-dependent learning phenomenon accompanied by a disinhibitory effect of scopolamine upon behavior.

Problem. The personality of employees is a vital key to understanding and improving the present correctional system. It was the purpose of the present study to assess, describe, and analyze a selected group of state correctional employees.

Method. The Bipolar Psychological Inventory and several demographic questions were used in assessing the personality of correctional employees and inmates. Cattell's Coefficient of Pattern Similarity (r_p) was employed to measure and analyze several characteristics of correctional employee sub-groups. Three hundred sixty-three employees and four hundred forty-eight inmates were studied.

Purpose. The purpose of the study was to present a theoretical framework for the concept of attitude and to examine the attitudes of selected subjects within this frame of reference. It was hoped that the results would clarify the concept of "attitude” and that they would provide solutions for problems in education.

Method. A theoretical framework which consisted of sixteen propositions dealing with organization, structure, function, and change of attitudes was presented as the frame of reference. The testing of persons with highly dissimilar cultural backrounds has received increasing attention since mid-century. In America, the practical problems of cross-cultural testing has been chiefly associated with subcultures or minority cultures within the dominate culture. Havinghurst (1951), in citing cultural differences which may affect intelligence performance named social class among the major types of culture in the U.S. A review of the literature revealed that research is close to unanimous in showing that there are significant differences in intelligence performance of children and youth from different socio-economic backrounds. It has been shown that there is a tendency to ascribe different stereotyped sex-roles to men and women (Breecher, 1969; Broverman, Vogel, Braverman, Clarkson, & Rosenkrantz, 1972; Chafetz, 1974; Bem, 1974) and that these sex-roles were previously thought to be the ideal of mental health for both (Braverman, et al., Chesler, 1971). Recent investigation shows that this is not necessarily the case. It was found that a high degree of sex-role typing is not only personally limiting, but also correlated with high anxiety, low self-esteem, and lower overall intelligence (Gray, 1957; Maccoby, 1966; Fasteau, 1974). The Effects Of Crowding, Density, And The Duration Of Each On Learning, Richard A. Neetz

Ninety-six male albino rats were housed from weaning in groups of 4, 8, or 16 animals. For all group sizes, animals were housed either in cages of a constant size (crowding) or in cages with floor space proportional to group size (density). Six animals from each of these conditions were tested for learning after either 55 or 109 days on a straight alley, a Lashley III maze, and a Y-maze. On the straight alley, no significant differences in running speed were found between durations, crowding and density, or group size. A significant trials effect was obtained (F=63.28, df=15/900, p < .01). On the Lashley III, a significant trials effect was obtained for running speed (F=102.27, df=8/480, p < .01) and errors (F=63.80, df=8/480, p < .01). The duration comparison showed the 55 day group making significantly more errors than the 109 day group (F=5.36, df=1/60, p < .05). No significant differences were found on running speed or errors between crowding and density or group size. On the Y-maze, the 55 day group had significantly more avoidances than the 109 day group (F=6.47, df=1/60, p < .05). …

Muscle Relaxation Training: A Comparison Of Emg Biofeedback With Verbal Instruction, Michael D. Dennis

The effectiveness of two muscle relaxation modalities, EMG biofeedback and verbal relaxation instruction, were compared. Fifteen college students were assigned to two experimental groups and a non-treatment control condition. Measurements of frontalis muscle activity were taken prior to, during and following three 20-minute training sessions. Results based on a set of non-orthogonal contrasts indicated significant relaxation effects for relaxation instruction when pre-training levels were compared to training completion and post-training levels. Experimental groups differed only at training completion where relaxation instruction was superior to EMG biofeedback. This study investigated the effects of rules and instructions, consultant feedback, and self-monitoring on teacher approval, disapproval, and student on-task behavior. Data was collected during a consulting period, measuring changes when the consultant was present, and during a non-consulting period, assessing whether similar changes occurred with the consultant absent. Three elementary teachers who exhibited more verbal disapproval than approval participated. On-task data was collected on three randomly selected students in each classroom. Following baseline, the teachers set classroom rules and were instructed to increase their approval and decrease disapproval. Phrenology is the doctrine that held that the moral and intellectual faculties of the mind were innate and located in specific areas of the brain, and that a deficiency or surfeit of each could be detected by an examination of the external surface of the skull.

This paper concentrates on the introduction of this doctrine to the United States, focusing on Philadelphia where it began and where for a time it became a controversial doctrine within the medical profession.

In particular Philadelphia physicians such as Benjamin Rush and John Bell were early adherents of phrenology.

A comparison is made of the relative learning effectiveness under several instructional methods: a laboratory approach, computer-programmed instruction, and audio-visual teaching, with the traditional lecture method as a control. No significant differences have been recorded relative to the different methods or sex of the students. Some indication of preference among the laboratory and computer groups for those activities is noted, but not sufficiently strong to be considered educationally significant.

Techniques of yoga have been associated with alterations in physiology, but until recently there has been only haphazard and uncontrolled research . Since 1970, information has been gathered which suggests that the practice of Transcendental Meditation (TM), a derivative of yoga, significantly affects changes in several physiological areas. This study observed changes in breath rate and peripheral circulation before, during, and after the practice of TM. Results showed a significant decrease in breath rate and changes in circulation patterns in the hand and forehead of subjects.

Rearing rodents or primates in environments that are comparatively enriched or impoverished results in often impressive physiological and anatomical changes after a certain period of exposure. However, the anatomical and biochemical characteristics that respond to environmental experience (Bennett, Diamond, Krech, & Rosenzweig, 1964; Greenough & Volkmar, 1973; Walsh, Budtz-Olsen, Penny, & Cummins, 1969) have been subjected to a more sophisticated level of analysis than have the less consistent changes in behavioral tendencies. A set of experiments is described which assessed the ability of human observers to monitor two earphone channels in order to perform one or two independent frequency discriminations. Performance (d′) was significantly poorer with dichotic stimulus presentation than in monaural control conditions. A detailed analysis of the data suggested that two factors were involved in the dichotic performance deficits. The first factor was a limited ability of the observers to perceptually separate the different stimuli presented to the two earphone channels. Under certain stimulus conditions, the channel-separation factor was significant enough to produce a low performance ceiling which overshadowed additional …

Prompts and instructions and reinforcer-sampling procedures were used in an attempt to increase recreational activity attendance of eight former mental patients in a community setting. A multiple baseline design with a reversal component was used to assess the effectiveness of the procedures. Data indicated that there was no increase in the time subjects spent outside of their residential facility, or in the number of recreational activities they attended in the community. There was an increase in the variety of the activities attended, but this increase was not maintained. Future research suggestions for increasing activity attendance are offered, including the effects …
