Research in the area of juvenile delinquency has reported personality and background differences between delinquents who have committed certain types of offenses (Randolph, l96l; Mizushima and DeVos, 1967). The major purpose of this study was to examine the academic characteristics of certain classifications of delinquent offenders. Specifically, the incidences of three school-related problems and absence of any of these problems were compared for certain classifications of offenders. The comparisons that were made were group versus individual offenses, person versus property offenses, and actual aggressors versus threatened aggressors. A Study Of The Relationship Between Maternal Employment History And A Woman's Sex Role Orientation And Career Development, Susan Elizabeth Ellett

Much of the research reviewed suggests that there is some relationship between a woman's mother's employment history, a woman's sex role orientation, and a woman's commitment to a career. In this study, the sex role orientation, career commitment, and career decision making of college women were examined in relation to length of maternal employment history. It was found that the longer a mother worked during the daughter's lifetime, the greater was the daughter's own desire to work. The length of maternal employment history was not found to significantly influence the daughter's sex role orientation or career decision making process. It …

A Study Of The Relationship Between Visual Short Term Memory And Speechreading In Hearing Impaired Geriatrics, Catherine Hollevoet

The relationship between visual short term memory (as measured by the Memory for Designs Test) and speechreading ability (as measured by the Barley Speechreading Test) was investigated in a sample of twenty-seven hearing impaired geriatrics. Correlation analysis verified a statistically significant relationship between Memory for Designs Test scores and Barley Speechreading Test scores. Partial correlation revealed the relationship between speechreading scores and short term memory scores was rot influenced significantly by variance in chronological age or speech discrimination ability. Memory for Designs Test scores were shown to be accurate predictors of scores achieved on the Barley Speechreading Test.

Preschool children's prosocial behavior and resistance to temptation were examined in relation to maternal childbearing practices. Forty-seven children and their mothers participated in the study. At a play session at the child's day care center, each child was given opportunities to behave prosocially, i.e., to help, share, teach, or exhibit sympathy, and to resist temptation, i.e., refrain from playing with an attractive but forbidden toy. Mothers of these children were individually interviewed and given a questionnaire developed for this study.

Fifty separated and divorced single-parent women with heterogeneous demographic characteristics participated in research designed to provide both a theoretical framework and a data base for the study of the single-parent woman.

The theoretical framework of self-perceived comfort was assessed with the use of a Comfort Survey designed by the researcher. A factor analysis of the scale revealed that comfort in this role was most related to the parental role and support for personal and family problems and was least related to financial considerations.

The Relation Between Environmental Factors And Acting-Out Behaviours Of Youth In A Treatment Centre, Denis Andrew Belicki

The present study examined the relation between social climate/staff attitude variables and disruptive behaviours within a school, a day-treatment service and three residences located in a centre for emotionally disturbed children. Ten categories of disruptive behaviour were recorded in three settings for ten weeks (five weeks in two settings). Data analysis revealed that the settings different significantly in acting-out indicidence. A series of discriminant analyses indicated that what might be referred to as a “traditional” approach best discriminated the settings. Social climate variables were found to be a major component of the discriminating functions.

Research in human operant heart rate conditioning concerned with the elucidation of the mediators of operant heart rate changes has postulated five mediating mechanisms related to operant heart rate change: respiratory, somatic-muscular, central neurological, cognitive and dispositional (personality). However, examination of the literature indicates that much of this research has produced equivocal results, hence, a clear picture of mediation has not emerged. The primary purpose of the present study was to determine the effects of threat frequency and contingency on game-playing behaviour in a threat-vulnerable game. A second purpose was to determine the stability of these effects when strategies were alerted during the final 75 trials of the game. Threat was operationally defined as the use of a particular choice in a threat-vulnerable game. One hundred students enrolled in undergraduate courses at Wilfrid Laurier University played in one of nine programmed strategy conditions: all possible pairwise orderings of a passive, demanding contingent, and a demanding noncontingent strategy. Previous research and opinion suggested that community psychology had not realized its 1960’s commitment to primary prevention. This thesis employs theoretically-oriented content analysis to investigate the extent of the specialization’s commitment to this issue as reflected in research published in three journals: American Journal of Community Psychology (1973-1978), Journal of Community Psychology (1976), Community Mental Health Journal (1966, 1976). The data suggests that approximately 50% of this periodical literature focuses on some aspect of primary prevention. The implications of these findings are discussed.

The Developmental Inventory Scales for Children (DISC) was designed as a screening device for preschool children. The purpose of the study was to assess the validity of the DISC. Twenty male and twenty female preschoolers were observed for three 30 minute sessions and their activities recorded by an observer. The observer then rated each child in each of the areas of the DISC under study. Each child was then rated by his/her teacher and one parent using the same rating scales as had the observer. Correlation between the RPRS total and WAIS FSIQ showed that approximately 43% of the variance in the RPRS total can be accounted for by the variance in the FSIQ. Verbal IQ is not significantly higher correlated with the RPRS total than the Performance IQ (p < .10). Factor analysis of the 6 RPRS subscores resulted in 2 factors. Subsequent factor analysis of the 6 RPRS subscores plus FSIQ and the factor analysis of the 6 RPRS subscores plus PIQ and VIQ showed the first factor to be an intelligence factor accounting for 85% of the common variance. The RPRS variables FL, FM, M and Sh loaded on this factor. The second factor was a nonintelligence factor accounting for 15% of the common variance. Small m is clearly the main determinant of this factor followed by Sh. In addition, the results of 2 exploratory factor analyses are discussed. The first exploratory factor analysis involved 23 variables, namely the 6 RPRS subscores, RPRS total, the 11 WAIS subscales, FSIQ, VIQ, PIQ, VIS and OABD. The second exploratory analysis involved 17 variables, namely the 6 RPRS subscores and the 11 WAIS subscales.

Multiple ECS treatments were administered to rats in order to assess the effects of electroshock upon rotational behavior. Since CA systems have a demonstrated role in the determination of rotational activity, alterations in behavioral asymmetry would suggest underlying changes in the intrinsic asymmetry of CA projections. If ECS, in turn, were to alter CA function, then one would expect ECS to also alter rotational asymmetry. In order to test this hypothesis, animals were given ECS daily for eight consecutive days. Experimental investigations of the relative effectiveness of group versus individual brainstorming procedures have consistently reported the finding of individual brainstorming superiority. Several hypotheses concerning the nature of the inhibitory factor or factors operating in the group situation have been postulated. One which has been mentioned frequently involves postulation of the presence of anticipated evaluation in brainstorming groups. That is, it has been hypothesized that group members may believe that other members will evaluate critically ideas which they produce. We have made an absolute determination of the electron attachment coefficient η (cm-1) in helium containing 0.1-1% fluorine covering an E/N range from 3Td-17Td. At an estimated average energy of 5 eV we find a rate coefficient equal to (7.5±1.5) x10-10 cm3/sec.

A game of chance void of feedback was played by 36 adults to determine the motivational properties of various degrees of self-investment. The levels of self-investment were created by altering the extent to which subjects were involved in making one of the symbols used in the game. A practice trial was used to establish each subjects base score and a final trial to determine behavior changes induced by self-investment. The gains between trials yielded significant results (p<.01) due to subject participation in the experimental process.

The purpose of this study was to determine maternal and paternal perceptions of the neonate. The Broussard Neonatal Perception Inventory was used to measure perception.

Thirty couples who delivered normal, healthy, first-born infants at a Naval Hospital in San Diego volunteered for the study. Consent forms were signed during the hospital stay and the Broussard Neonatal Perception Inventory was administered to both parents in the homes when the infants were one month old.

Statistical analysis of data showed that mothers and fathers did rate their one-month-old infants as above the average infant using the Broussard Neonatal Perception Inventory. The range …

Memory for visual forms can be assessed in two separate ways. The most common approach is to assess the degree to which a form is accurately remembered. A less common approach is to assess the type and degree of change in form memory. The present experiment investigated the role of a single suggestive label in affecting both accuracy and qualitative change of recognition memory for ambiguous visual forms. The response-independent, fixed-time delivery of electric tail shock in the squirrel monkey generated bites on a rubber hose immediately following shock delivery and manual responses on a lever immediately preceding shock. The procedure generated two temporally and topographically different responses in the single organism in a single experimental session. The study proposes that experiences caused by direct drug action and the unusual pressures of obtaining the illegal drug heroin greatly affect heroin addict MMPI responding. These drug-related experiences confound MMPI profile data by introducing a variable not related to personality dynamics or personality traits. An associated confounding variable is the amount of time between cessation of heroin use and the administration of the MMPI. Previous research concerning sex-role stereotyping, psychological androgyny, and mental health as it relates both to sex-role stereotyping and androgyny was reviewed. The literature indicated the need for a reevaluation of mental health standards with regard to sex-role stereotypes. The present study attempted to approach this need by examining the relationship between psychological androgyny and attitudes toward sex-role stereotyping. It was hypothesized that androgynous individuals would be more likely than other individuals to state that a hypothetical person possessing a specific set of traits could be either male or female.
